Bookwalter finished about 2 minutes after Rodgers. Good ride from him.
Kelderman takes 7th off Evans. |

Absolutely horrible ride by Ryder. I expected him to get dropped obviously but he was just atrocious today. He usually has such great recovery. Very disappointing. He'll keep 9th but it's just a minor placing so who really cares.

Quintana easy.
Very happy with Kelderman's 7th GC spot.
Poels very strong as well today!

Same time as Nibali from 2011 for both Quintana and Uran. |

Well that was a shite stage. Literally nothing happened, and when it did it was spectator interference.
I know the logistics of trying to keep fans in check the whole way along the climb is very difficult, but something seriously HAS to be done by the organisers... the fans/morons are just ruining the race.

Giro has no police presence compared to the Tour. Having police on the climbs should eradicate most of the lunacy we saw today. It was pretty disgusting. |

Quintana looks like he is relaxing in a big chair with some music playing while climbing Zoncolan. WTF!
Great for Kelderman, 7th is just really good imo. Also good job for Aru, Majka, Pozzo and Rolland were to be expected. Well Rolland not really, he proved to be very good, did not expect him to be this good. |

I got kind of confused. For a second on the climb it looked like Pozzo was with the leaders but then he was off the back of the other group.

Speaking of Rolland he apparently told BeIn Sports after the stage that'd he'd be starting the Tour de France too, presumably targeting stages & KoM jersey. |

I saw that too... it definitely looked like he had made the junction up to Quintana and Uran and then the next thing we see of him he's last out of the Aru group. Hopefully he just cracked and it wasn't more spectator nonsense...

He was initially supposed to ride the Tour and Vuelta but changed it to Giro-Vuelta because his first child is born around August-September. |

Boring stage, a bit disappointed by Movistar, looked like they had the team to control the break and win on Zoncolan. They decided not to, which maybe was smart in the general picture, but seeing a break win on Zoncolan, Alpe d' Huez, Angliru is a no go. Danish TV blames Europcar, Ag2r, QuickStep and Astana, but really, what do they expect when they hit Zoncolan? I bet Quintana would destroy them.

Pozzo and Rolland (Or was it Aru) closed the gap to Quintana/Uran/Poels.
But then Uran accelerated. I don't think Pozzo and Rolland/Aru dropped because of spectators.
Great ride by Rogers and Roche today! Feel a bit sorry for Bongiorno though. The situation reminds me a bit of the Boonen-Pozzato back in Flandern/PR a few years ago.
Did anyone else see Didi today? What a lovely surprise!
And Poels took off one the spectators sunglasses and threw them away lol. Chaos chaos chaos on the last climb, as lot of you mentioned.
It seems like most you aren't satisfied with the stage, but really, what did you expect? Fireworks? People were comletely drained from yesterday, it's only natural they didn't have a lot power left. And the gaps between GC riders were just too big due to the mountain ITT yesterday. This reminds me of Ventoux a few years ago with Lance defending his 3rd spot in the GC. Frank Schleck at 4th tried, but he was just too exhausted. From my point of view it just doesn't work with a huge mountain as the second last stage. Score is almost settled there, and people do not have the power that they used to back in the happy 90s.
Present:
Tinkoff-Saxo - AG2R - Colombian riders
Past:
Francisco Mancebo - Illes balears - Carlos Sastre - Kelme - Robbie McEwen

RE penultimate stage as huge mountain stage: It kinda depends on the situation of the race and whether the race has effectively been won or not. If it has, which can often be the case, then you do get a stage like today's, but then if it's close like Vuelta last year, then the penultimate stage turns into a great spectacle like the Angliru did.
In my opinion, a better solution would be to have a slightly easier stage as the last GC-day, more like the Rifugio Panarotta stage and have a Zoncolan-type stage earlier. That way it's not looming over the riders for the whole race and they have to carpe diem earlier on in the race (although this race turned out a bit like that to be fair); while if it's close there's still a decent enough battleground for a finale to be fought out.
And please, no Zoncolan next year or the year after. 5 times in the last 11 years is almost as much as Alpe d'Huez and although it has great potential for racing, I really don't want overkill - the less frequently it's used the more myth and hype builds up around it and it becomes more of an event.
