Wow...this was really a great move by Leopard, they really dominate the race...Hesjedal did what he could,,,

Leopard Banana

Too bad Hesjedal lost some time, but still a good stage.

Well, with that Leopard-domination it was hard to get a better result.. still a Top-10 for Ryder, and that's good Smile

Alakagom
Even Garmin can't stop Leopard domination, you still did well, good luck in tt now.

It`s okay for him but the annoying thing is that they lost contact on the still flat part directly ahead of the climb.
Without that situation I should have done much better and probably somewhere around with Evans and Szmyd.

Just played the 6th stage of Catalunya.
I rode very aggressive as I wanted to try something different.
Boom attacked at the start. His group was caught soon and he tried it again.
After 30km everything was together again and Felline attacked with 110km to go.
As nobody helped him he rode solo until the 50km mark, where he got caught.
Then C.Meyer attacked with 40km to go. No one followed, so it might have been an interesting fight with Rojas and Fuglsang still in the peloton waiting for the uphill sprint.

Then PCM crashed and I got frustrated Angry
So no more stage report today as I am too tired to give it another try.

Enjoying Barca - Arsenal now. Go Arsenal.

Quite hard for me to post something as I have almost no time.
Work, champions league, work ...
Last chance this week might be tomorrow evening as I am not home until Sunday then.

Sorry for so much no story related stuff here Wink

Next report won`t be before Sunday or Monday evening as I will have a 3 day "vacation" directly after work today.
I haven`t even played the next stages yet, so I have to do this first.

Looking forward for the end of March when I will have more time again at the end of my practical work.

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya - Stage 6
El Vendrell - Barcelona
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/6-1.png
The stage is quite flat but because of the hard uphill sprint it might be an opportunity for a breakaway or good puncheurs.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/6-2.jpg
David Millar with an attack today. He is ~12min back, so no really big danger.
Grendene (Ceramica), Gallopin (Cofidis), Pichot (Europcar) and De Backer (Skil) are the other 4 riders in this group.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/6-3.jpg
30km later some more riders joined and now the peloton is slowing down.
Isasi (Euskaltel), Mora (Andalucia), Kritskiy (Katusha) and Jørgensen (Leopard).
More is the best placed with +10min, Millar is the best climber/hilly rider while Pichot and Grendene are the best sprinters in this group.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/6-4.jpg
60km to go and HTC is leading the peloton with ten minutes back. Mora is in the virtual lead now and also Millar would enter the top10. But they start to accelerate now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/6-5.jpg
With 15km to go the group is climbing the short hill to the finish the first time. The next time will be the decision for the win.
The group will definitely have success but who is the strongest today?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/6-6.jpg
De Backer starts with the first attacks to avoid a sprint. Jørgensen and Isasi also tried their luck but no chance. It will end in a sprint of the group.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/6-7.jpg
Just five riders were able to fight for the win and in the end Kritskiy was the strongest. Millar wins the sprint for the second by a few millimeters ahead of Mora and the two strongest sprinters.
Actually the Russian winner was my lowest bet of these 5 riders, but he must have felt very well.

David Millar just told us this morning that he will retire after this season but today he showed once more that he is still able to get good results.

Nice second, but wished Millar was able to win on the same day he announces his retirement. That would be great =)

tsmoha
Nice 2nd.. though it's always a bit frustrating to finish 2nd out of a small group with a good rider..

Maybe Millar decided to retire because he couldn't beat Kritskiy? Wink
JK, it's a pity he's retiring, he was one of Garmin's best riders.

roturn
Thanks.
I really thought I would be able to win this stage but 2/9 was also quite good for him.
The decision was before the stage. HE had indeed lots of great results like the 2nd overall in Catalunya 2010, several top 10 results and stage wins.
But if you have a look on his stats in the Criterium International presentation you will see how much he decreased.

Criterium International - Stage 3
Porto-Vecchio timetrial

The final stage of the 2012 Criterium International is a 17km long hilly timetrial. The overall win should already be secured but there are still some close placements in the top 10.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Crit%20Int/3-2.jpg
Tejay Van Garderen was also expected to fight for the win but as also Hesjedal he was surprised by Leopard and couldn`t follow the Canadian afterwards. A new best time for him.

Kiryienka with a good time today. 8s faster than the US American. This will also be a danger for Hesjedal, who is just 30s ahead of him.

Hesjedal with an average performance today. Unfortunately he lost the duel against Kiryienka but at least won it against Hivert and Van Garderen. So he will be 8th in the overall.

Coppel followed the Leopard train as long as possible and had a good result in the end. But actually he wanted more.
Today he shows again that his form is close to perfect.

The French champion Vaugrenard was the big surprise on the hard mountain stage. Today`s timetrial should suit him and so it might be exciting to see him fighting for a podium. He finishes 2nd behind Coppel so far.

Cadel Evans was Andy`s helper yesterday but with his 2nd in the overall he showed a great performance.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Crit%20Int/3-8.jpg
He was the strongest yesterday and also today he is doing well as he isn`t a time trial specialist. 2nd for him here and winner of the overall: Andy Schleck.
26'45

Hesjedal, Stetina and Duggan were doing as good as possible. We weren`t able to beat Leopard`s dominance and so the podium is filled with their riders. But also the French riders Coppel, Vaugrenard and Hivert with good results.

Leopard consolidated their dominance Shock

Not the best TT for Hesjedal but at least he keeps his 8th. A bit more and Van Garderen could have passed him.

roturn
He isn`t the best time trialist so his result was ok. Similar times than Monier, Kruijswijk for example. Just some riders like Casar or Szmyd were a bit surprising. The other top10 riders are better specialists.

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya - Stage 7
Sant Cugat del Vallès - Montmeló
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/PCM0001.jpg
The final stage here is a flat and quite short stage for the sprinters. Hopefully Rojas can do good today. Unfortunately he isn`t feeling too good today as he lost much energy on his attack.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/PCM0002.jpg
Claude (Movistar), Westra (Rabobank), Smukulis (Ag2r), Huguet (Skil) and Irizar (RadioShack) form the break of the day. None of them is really a danger.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/PCM0003.jpg
Löw and Meyer are doing a light pace in the peloton.
With 50km to go and 3min advance other teams helped them and so it will end in a mass sprint.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/PCM0004.jpg
The speed was very fast in the end and due to the very heavy wind Rojas was exhausted and couldn`t sprint that great. Therefore Lars Boom, who was his first lead-out had good legs and as a classic specialist he can handle these weather conditions.
But the winner is Ventoso ahead of Oscar Freire. Boom finished on a strong 3rd ahead of many better sprinters. He is looking in a good form for the upcoming cobbled races.
Tony Martin dominated this race and was never in danger to lose his shirt.
But also Garmin can be quite pleased I think. Rojas wasn`t able to get top results in the sprints but with a successful break he stole the leader jersey. Also Fuglsang as 7th did his best. Looking forward for the real hard mountain stages with the young Dane.
And not to forget David Millar`s 2nd on yesterday`s stage.

Anonymer
very good overall with rojas

tsmoha
Nice 7th in the end.. and of course a nice win for Martin Smile

roturn
Thanks for the comments. Rojas had good luck with his successful break and then 1-2 placements more after a split on the last stage.
Therefore that Martin`s stats are still quite average he is quite dominant as also Cataldo or Moreno in some races. Really like the higher importance of the fitness level.

Actually I forgot to change the 2011 to 2012 Wink

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/GW-logo.jpg

The Gent–Wevelgem is a Flanders Classics cycle road race held in Belgium including two ascents of the cobbled, difficult, and often selective Kemmelberg with lots of wind and rain. The event was first run in 1934.
Record champs with 3 wins are Robert Van Eenaeme (BEL), Rik Van Looy (BEL), Eddy Merckx (BEL) and Mario Cipollini (ITA).
Johan Vansummeren won the last two editions and could join them.

After a great double win in 2010 Vansummeren did it again in 2011. With a late attack he got rid of the better sprinters. Hopefully he can continue this series.

Garmin squad in 2012
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/GW-Team.jpg
With Maaskant, Vansummeren and Haussler we have 3 podium candidates. We hope that one of them is doing well today. Van Der Velde will be the most important helper once again while we can`t expect too much of the others.
Lars Boom and Felline are still in Spain and will join the cobbled squad in the next races.

Favourites

***** Cancellara
**** Boonen, Breschel
*** Pozzato, Haussler, Flecha
** Maaskant, Eisel, Devolder, Gilbert
* Hushovd, Hagen, Vansummeren, Ballan, Steegmans

Biggest names missing are probably Nuyens, Willems, Guldhammer, Boom, Felline and Hulsmans. All of them would have been possible top 10 contenders.
But it is still Leopard, Quickstep and Garmin with the strongest squads here.
Liquigas with Gilbert but no other specialist participating.
