Thanks. By the way, Kangert form is 85, but let's see what he can produce
April 20th: Giro del Trentino
Stage 1: Riva del Garda - Torbole sul Garda, 12.0 kms
To start the race, a short ITT: a prologue. It's 12 km long but who cares, it's a prologue. Just a warm up for what's coming on the next 3 days. We'll also see who is fit and who isn't.
After Svein Tuft had set the early best time, Tom Danielson was a favorite to beat. He didn't do a good time trial, though, and was 12 seconds slower than his team mate.
Another favorite was also a Garmin rider, Jack Bobridge. He was able to set the new best time, 16'24, same time as Tuft.
I think we'll review our goals: Tanel Kangert, time trialing in his nice Estonian champion jersey, did worse than we expected: provisional 12th, 20 seconds behind Bobridge.
Riccardo Riccò was trying to limit his losses today - but that's really not how you do it. He was overtaken by Vande Velde, lost 1'36 to stage winner and ended last. Yeah, last. The Garmin rider, on the other hand, was the biggest favorite for today's stage and confirmed it, setting the new best time - 16'20, 4 seconds faster than Bobridge.
The only rider left on the road now was Ivan Basso. He didn't really do a good time trial, finishing 22th 30 seconds behind Vande Velde. He stayed behind Kangert in the final results so maybe his fitness is not good. Or maybe he just had a bad day.

So, I guess we better take out Riccò from the favorites list. He's clearly lacking a lot of shape. Riccò and time trials have never really been friends, but last? His fitness must be pretty bad. As for us, Kangert actually didn't do so bad: I expected a lot more riders to pass him after his provisional 12th, but he finished nicely on 15th, 25 secs behind Vande Velde. Also nice performance by the team, we were 10th on team classement. Basso finished behind Kangert with totally better stats, so Basso might not be in a good shape - and that's quite exquisite, as the Giro is knocking on the door. I still think Basso will simply drop all others to win in the mountains. Last but not least, what a domination from Garmin: 1,2 and 3 =O
April 21th: Giro del Trentino
Stage 2: Dro - San Martino di Castrozza, 170.4 kms
Our second stage takes us from Dro to San Martino di Castrozza. Several climbings wait for the riders, including the mountain top finish on Castrozza. After yesterday’s prologue, we’ll see who are the real GC contenders today. The last climb, San Martino di Castrozza (15.3 kms 6.4%) should see some serious attacks while it gets steeper going to the finish. Tanel Kangert form is not really good yet, but hopefully he is able to finish in the probably small group of non attackers.
Well, just like yesterday, Riccardo Riccò shows the horrible fitness he has. But it’s really worse than expected, really, as with only 7 kilometers of race he falls from the peloton in a 123 meters hill.
The early group was formed by 12 riders. We sent Morandi in it hoping he would be reeled in after the first big mountain, being able to give Kangert a late help.
Massimiliano Gentili attacked out of the peloton as we were about to reach Passo Forcella, the 7 km climb before our first categorized climb of the day (Passo del Brocon).
Morandi and Tosatto dropped out of the break after Passo Forcella. Meanwhile, Gentili climbed his way up the breakaway, reaching them a little after the beginning of Passo del Brocon (10.3 kms 7.4%). Ceramica Flaminia had now 3 riders among the 11 riders group, who held a 5 minute advantage to the peloton.
On the peloton, Kangert was suffering a bit, but hanging on. His team mates Nazaret and Vítor, on the other hand, were falling off the peloton, who was shortened to 73 riders by now. At least we still got Morandi who was going to be caught in a few kms. Sinkewitz was making the pace alone.
Back to the leaders, Gentili upped the pace on the break group. Only Zaugg and Loubet managed to follow him.
We thought Kangert was well positioned. But he was not. When some riders started to fall of the pace, a split occurred and it caught Kangert. Even with the help of Morandi, Kangert did not have the power to come back to the front group, that had 47 riders.
The 3 leaders started descending 4’47 ahead of the peloton.
Ferrari joined the front group on the descent. When the four riders got to Passo di Gobbera, the penultimate ascent of the day, peloton was trailing them by 3’42 with 30 kilometers left.
As soon as we reached San Martino di Castrozza, Gentili dropped the others. What a ride he was doing! The peloton was still 3’26 behind them, and with only 11 kilometers left, he has great chances of winning today’s stage and maybe even taking the leader’s jersey! He’s 55 seconds behind Vande Velde on GC.
A few riders were trying to attack on the peloton, but without success as Danielson set a very high pace for his leader.
Gentili had already reached the 5 km banner by now. His advantage was only growing, it was 3’48 by now!! He was surely today’s stage winner. Second rider on the road was Rafael Valls, who also attacked out of the pack on Passo del Brocon and had now just passed Loubet and Zaugg. After them came the peloton.
And it’s now Szmyd making the pace for Ivan Basso in the final kilometers. Zaugg and Loubet were about to be caught, while gap to Valls was 1’07. Gentili still had 3’50 to the pack.
But here’s the winner of the day: Massimiliano Gentili hasn’t even seen the line but he already celebrates! A truly deserved celebration, not only for the stage but also for the leader jersey, which will be worn by him tomorrow!
Nobody on the peloton was able to attack through the whole climb thanks to the fast pace. They entered the last kilometer 40 seconds behind Valls, and were coming fast! Would Valls be caught right on the line?
The answer is no. An exhausted Rafael Valls was in fact reached by the others, but there was no time enough for him to lose his 2nd place. Surprisingly, Szmyd completed the podium, even after doing the work for the last kilometers.
With a residue of 1h01’12, Ricardo Riccò crossed the line alone, in last position. Fortunately, he didn’t finish in time to race another day, so we won’t see more of this tomorrow.

Well.. I believe we have a overall winner. Stage 4 isn't really hard, and with only that final climb I don't believe anybody is able to take more than 2 minutes on Gentili. He's showed an awesome performance today, fooling everybody in the peloton, and even though he lost some ground on the last kilometers, he won by almost 3 minutes!! Great performance by him. As for Kangert, we'll try to get a better result on stage 4. Just if you wanna know, he finished 55th 12'37 behind stage winner.
85 fit Kangert should do better i think(not saying its your fault mate),its weird...my Footon riders do better and they are weaker...strange things happen in your team...i think your riders should go to one Mae de Santo...
@tsmoha
We are thinking in that, but maybe he won't go with the break but attack like 60 km before finish.. dunno.
@roturn
Thanks. Well, it's difficult to get worse at least
@baia
Actually, it was a bit of my fault. Kangert was well positioned but for a peloton 90 riders sized. When a lot of weaker riders that were near the front of the peloton started to drop, then Kangert was bad positioned, for the 40 riders sized peloton. And he doesn't have the strength like better riders to use dot to come back to peloton. We should have taken more care of that, probably.
Oh yeah, and I was forgetting: we have contacted this Pai-de-Santo to try to take out these bad things... let's see if it works
(believe you do not know what is that given it's a brazilian thing, so here is wikipedia page) (oh and sry for translations problems, these are quite strange and rarely used words, had to google a lot of times =P)

April 22nd: Giro del Trentino
Stage 3: Fiera di Primiero - Trento, 159.4 kms
Today’s stage is said for a sprinter to win, but we have good odds for that not happening, given there is a lot of climbings today. Right on the start the riders will face Passo Rolle, a 17 km climb with average of 7%. Next will be Monte Sover. With 40 kilometers left, there will be the last climbings: 2 small hills, but quite steep. Finally, the descent to a flat finish. Our team would hope on a good position was this an easier stage - although Pagliarini and Walker fitness is around 91, we don’t believe they will be able to sprint in the end.
The riders started today’s stage looking up: we had no time to do anything before the climb.
They were glad when the climb finally finished. The top of the mountain, which got up to 1980 meters, had a lot of snow that made it a beautiful landscape. On the top, 7 riders had broken from the peloton, while about 30 had dropped from the peloton. We had 3 riders among the 30 dropped, but fortunately both Walker and Pagliarini were still in the peloton.
After the descent, some more riders attacked and were able to join the breakaway. When they reached the last ascents of the day, gap to the peloton was 3’12 with 40 kilometers left. Pagliarini and Walker were in the peloton but were suffering even before the hills, so we were almost sure they wouldn’t be able to sprint… again.
Those climbs saw some drops on the break. After the descent, with 18 kilometers to go, the leading group now had only 6 riders. Pagliarini and Walker dropped out of the peloton that was now a bit less than 2 minutes behind the leaders of the course.
Game crashed here. Anyway, there wasn’t much left to report:
The peloton, that was now down to about 60 riders, wasn’t able to close the gap on the escapees - with 5 km left for the front group, they still had almost a minute and where going to take the win! Ruggero Marzoli proved to be the one with the better legs and took the win ahead of Kristjan Koren and Marco Marcato. 34 seconds later came the peloton, with Mirco Lorenzetto winning the sprint for 7th.

Well, a guy that can play cards and billiards and find lost dogs would be enough to help us?
April 23rd: Giro del Trentino
Stage 4: Arco - Alpe di Pampeago, 160.4 kms
The last stage of the race offers… you guess… climbings! The route will be very broken until the last part. Small ascent, small descent, few flat sections. Finally, with 8 km left, the riders will go up Alpe di Pampeago. The stage isn’t really tough, but the mountain top finish should be very interesting. We’ll probably try an early attack with Kangert and see what happens.
11 riders attacked to form the early breakaway on this cloudy day. Most notable were probably Andrea Masciarelli and Sergey Lagutin. We had intentions to attack with Kangert more close to the finish, so not being in the break for the whole day.
The peloton, controlled initially by Ceramica Flaminia and afterwards Garmin, kept the break under reachable gaps, never letting it go above 7 minutes.
Tanel Kangert was feeling awesome today: +5 for him (second day in a row!!) We were hoping this would help us to get something nice today.
As we got near to the finish line it started raining. On the last uphill section before Pampeago and with the break already reeled in, Szmyd tried an attack. We thought in countering with Kangert but pace in the peloton was too high for him.
Szmyd was caught one km before the start of Pampeago. Kangert was well positioned this time in the 65-rider peloton as we started the climbing. Danielson was setting a high pace: does Vande Velde wanna try something today?
2 kilometers into the climb, Szmyd went again!
Pozzovivo was able to join him, and they quickly got almost a minute gap to the peloton!
Vande Velde tried to go with 3.3 km to go, but was unable to create a gap as Pérez Arrieta (Footon - Servetto) made a high pace for the group, who was now shortened to 30 riders. Kangert was still in it, but suffering a lot. Gap to Szmyd group was under control, going between 40 and 50 seconds.
The 2 leaders increased, and now with only 2 kilometers to go the gap was up to a minute twenty seconds! The win today would probably go for one of these two!
They have entered the final kilometer for the final sprint! Szmyd is 5th on GC (+2’25) while Pozzovivo is 6th (+2’41). Second group is 1’39 behind.
Oho - gap is getting bigger! The peloton starts the last kilometer of this year’s Giro del Trentino, but Szmyd is almost 2 minutes in front! He’s leading the sprint, and if he gets the win, it’s gonna be a close one on GC!
And Szmyd takes the win! Pozzovivo gets the same time, and Szmyd is now looking at the clock! With the 20 seconds bonus he is trailing GC leader Massimiliano Gentili by only 2’05!
In the sprint, Tonti creates a gap to the rest of the field and gets 3rd, 1’50 behind Szmyd! But what’s the peloton time?
Ivan Basso leads the peloton and takes 4th - 2’08 behind Szmyd!! He is the winner of Giro del Trentino 2010 by 3 seconds!!

Well, not the type of race I really was looking for. Kangert has already reached 90 fitness and I expected more of him. 15th on time trial, 29th on stage 4. That's not really good results. It might have been our fault on stage 2, but he had daily form +5 today plus a good fitness and finished 29th. I really expected more. About the sprinters, it's different from when they can't keep with the peloton on flat stage: it was a tough stage, and you can see that only 60 riders finished with the peloton.
Ivan Basso couldn't repeat his win from last year, but Szmyd took the matter into his own hands and brought the victory again for Liquigas. Instead, the rider preparing for the Giro should be satisfied with a 7th and the teams classement for Liquigas. Thanks to this last stage performance, Pozzovivo even snatched a podium in the end. And poor Gentili though he had a great win for him and Ceramica Flaminia to lose by 3 seconds. Cycling is a cruel sport.
Our next race is in Spain, Vuelta a la Rioja, on the 25th. We have only 3 more races before our second goal of the season, and these 3 are classics, so we're getting closer, but got no really good results so far. Let's hope this changes when it really matters.
Welcome to Vuelta a La Rioja, a Spanish classic race hold in the region of - really? - La Rioja. Through it’s history it actually wasn’t a one day race, but a 3-day race. Financial challenges in 2009 forced the organizers to reduce the three-day Rioja tour into a one-day race.
Created in 1957 and having 49 editions so far, is mainly dominated by Spanish riders. Unless you don’t call winning 45 out of 49 times a dominance. At the moment, though, the streak is ‘only’ in 5 editions, as Vladimir Karpets won in 2004. On the 90s, some famous riders added the race to their palmares, such as Laurent Jalabert, Abraham Olano and Miguel Indurain. Current winner is David García. Will the Spanish domination continue this year, in the 50th anniversary of the race?
Favorites
Ok, so I expected to have few good riders considering LBL is today, same day. But… well, the Spanish domination has a nice chance to continue thanks to Caisse d’Epargne, who brought Juan José Cobo and David López. They also brought Rigoberto Uran, so I’d like to know what is their team for LBL like. Ángel Vicioso (Andalucía) also is another Spain-win hopes holder. And also David Blanco (Palmeiras Resort). Actually, the list is very big and doesn’t get really worse as you go on, so just another names: Leonardo Bertagnolli (Androni Giocattoli), Maxim Iglinskiy (Astana), Kanstantsin Siutsou (HTC - Columbia), and others. If you want you can have a look in the startlist for more names.
Rio es Carnival/Seara/Vivo
Team Goals:
- be part of breakaway;
- cross fingers hoping for good luck.
Again we’ll not be doing good thanks to the very strong startlist when we hoped for a weaker one considering LBL is today. I just hope those teams go reallyyy bad on that. Let’s try to put 2 man in the break and that’s all.
