Thanks.
There is one hilly stage left, where I hope to survive with Rojas in the peloton. Then 2 flat stages. One is with an 2km uphill sprint in the end. Maybe I need time bonuses on the final stage but there is definitely the chance to keep it. At least I hope so
Now there are some parallel races. Next to the final 3 stages I will ride the Criterium International, E3 Harelbeke and Gen Wevelgem.
The Critérium International is a two day bicycle stage race held in France every spring, first run in 1932. Most wins with 5 each have Emile Idée (FRA), Raymond Poulidor (FRA) and Jens Voigt (GER).
I will play Laurent`s Carpentras Criterium International variant.
First stage will be a flat stage, 2nd a hilly/mountain stage, but less hard then the 2010 version I think. Last stage is a short hilly time trial.
Result in 2011
1 Ryder Hesjedal Garmin - Cervelo 2 Thomas Danielson Garmin - Cervelo 3 Alberto Contador Astana 4 Robert Gesink Rabobank 5 Rigoberto Uran Team Movistar 6 Alexander Vinokourov Astana 7 Jonathan Hivert Saur - Sojasun 8 Christophe Moreau Team Movistar 9 Daniel Martin Garmin - Cervelo 10 Xavier Zandio Team Movistar
After riding Tirreno and Milan San Remo Hesjedal already had a good form and won this race quite dominant. Danielson was the big surprise as he was able to beat Contador. He was really in the form of his life, while Martin started the season with the 3 days on Corsica with a strong 9th on his way to the Giro.
It will be hard to defend the title on the new route.
Garmin squad in 2012
Ryder Hesjedal will lead our team again as his form is quite good. Stetina will try his best, although he would prefer the harder mountain road. An important helper could be Kreder, who started to improve in this season after 2 years of stagnation. Tyler Farrar will be the man for the first stage and will be supported by Fischer.

***** A.Schleck
**** Evans, Van Garderen
*** Coppel, Hesjedal , Kiryienka
** Vorganov, Vaugrenard, Hivert, Roche
* Kruijskwijk, Stetina , Seeldraeyers, Casar, Fario Da Costa
Most favourites aren`t the best time trialists but none of them is bad in this discipline. Maybe Van Garderen and Coppel have the best chances to gain time there.
Schleck is by far the best climber but not too sure about his form, but with Evans they have a 2nd big favourite in their team.
With Roche and Vaugrenard there are also two big contenders for the Ardennes participating and the new route should really suit them.

Criterium International - Stage 1
Vaison La Romaine - Carpentras
A very flat stage today. Just a short and not very hard hilly 10km to the finish. Hopefully Farrar can win again after several less successful sprints in a row.
His biggest opponents might be Ponzi, Vaitkus, Duque and Cardoso, so of course the US American is the top favourite.
Randell (Spidertech), Daëninck (Cofidis), Guillou (Ag2r), Day (Fly V), Retschke (Differdange), Ovechkin (Euskaltel) and Fédrigo (Europcar) are the group of the day. None of them might probably stay in the first group on tomorrow`s stage.
4 riders chased them with 1-2 minutes but even after 75km they weren`t able to join.
Pineau (Roubaix), Elijzen (Omega), Maximchuk (RadioShack) and Verschoor (TT1) are in this group.
90km and 7min advance. Time for us to make the pace. Rowe and Wilson are our workers here. They are supported by Leopard, Farnese and Saur.
It doesn`t look good for the escapees today.
Two long trains today.
One with Lemoine, Vaitkus and Duque and the other one with Ponzi, Farrar, Cardoso and Sulzberger. No team had enough strong riders for an own train. The sprint started and obviously the first train was the faster one. So Farrar decided to switch and took Vaitkus wheel with 1,5km to go.
But it was too late for him. Lemoine wins the first stage ahead of Vaitkus and Farrar. It was a good sprint by Farrar, but he had the wrong wheel when the sprint started. Bad luck today as he was the fastest in the end.

Thanks Tsmoha. Hope Hesjedal can get nice results.
Volta a Catalunya - Stage 5
It might be the 2nd hardest stage in Catalunya. It will be a big fight for Rojas but hopefully he is able to survive the last hill, that will be the hardest difficulty.
A big group of average riders in todays break. Loosli (Lampre) with +10min is the best. Other riders are Pichot (Europcar), Downing (Sky), Didier (Leopard), Gallopin (Cofidis), Pliuschin (Katusha), Huguet, Docker (Skil) or Stauff (Quickstep).
We don`t have a problem if a big group comes through to avoid bonus seconds for Martin. So Löw and Meyer aren`t doing very much and the advance increases on some minutes very fast.
It doesn`t really happen a lot until the final climb. Rojas was still in the big group without bigger problems. But now the hardest climb starts.
Tony Martin attacks first. Some riders try to follow.
2km later all riders are caught but Contador. He is still a few seconds ahead. Rojas starts to get troubles as the pace is very high now. Also Fuglsang is suffering but still in a very good position in the first rows.
On top of the hill it happened. The peloton splitted into several pieces and Rojas was just in the 3rd group together with Felline, who protected him. Millar, who was in the 2nd group waits for Rojas, while Fuglsang and Boom are our only riders in the first group.
All 3 riders are working now very hard to come back. But it doesn`t look very good as also the other teams are working a lot there,
With 3km to go Moreno attacked on the uphill section. As Martin and Cataldo followed also Fuglsang ahd to attack. Too bad that Rojas will lose the jersey after just one day. But well, he is a sprinter.
Moreno was the strongest today. Martin finishes 2nd ahead of Contador. Fuglsang finished on a very strong 5th with the same time.
Rojas come in with +2'44 and will fall back on the 17th in the overall.
It might have been possible on hard as proven with Millar in 2010 but not on extreme with a rider like Rojas. What a pity, but Fuglsang on 7th is also quite well so far.
Hopefully Rojas didn`t used too much energy on the last two stages and can take another good result on the next flat stages.

I actually hoped it as I was 2nd in my first season with Millar. 71mo, 74hi.
So I hoped that I can stay with Rojas here, too but it`s extreme now and so no chance.

Wow, nice breakaway with Rojas. Too bad he lost some after that, but Fuglsang still nice overall.

Thanks both.
One stage win is possible I think. The next stage ends with a hard uphill kilometer. There other riders like Martin, Moreno or Cataldo have better chances I think.
But as I experienced in the last weeks I will suck in the flat stage as I seems to have lost all sprinting skills

The E3 Prijs Vlaanderen – Harelbeke is an annual cycling race in the Flanders area of Belgium. The race starts and finishes in Harelbeke over 210 kilometres. The first E3 Prijs Vlaanderen took place in 1958.
The E3 classic is preparation for the Ronde van Vlaanderen. The route is shorter but many of the climbs are tackled. The conditions are also comparable as cobbles, wind and climbs decimate the bunch. The route takes a large lap around East Flanders including 12 hills.
Record champ with 5 wins is Tom Boonen.
Results in 2011
1 Tom Boonen Quick Step - Innergetic 2 Greg Van Avermaet Omega Pharma-Lotto 3 Maarten Wynants Quick Step - Innergetic 4 Stijn Devolder Quick Step - Innergetic 5 Filippo Pozzato Team Katusha 6 Sylvain Chavanel Quick Step - Innergetic 7 Leif Hoste Omega Pharma-Lotto 8 Alessandro Ballan Lampre-ISD 9 Frederik Willems Liquigas - Cannondale 10 Nick Nuyens Liquigas - Cannondale
On the last cobbled climb Quickstep did a very high pace and due to the wind they created a gap together with Van Avermaet, Hoste and Pozzato.
So far Garmin did also well, but lost contact on this point.
Garmin squad in 2012
Maaskant will lead our team here but also Haussler and Vansummeren have good chances for a good result. Van Der Velde might be our biggest helper.
Other good cobbled riders like Farrar, Felline or Boom are in other races but will definitely be fit for the Ronde and Paris Roubaix.

Harelbeke - Harelbeke
The first half is quite easy as there are just a very few cobbled sections and less hills. But then several cobbled hills will come. This plus the strong wind will split the peloton quite a lot. Hopefully our Garmin riders can do better than in the last years, where they always missed the first group in the right moment.
Like always some riders attacked early. But especially on these classics it`s close to impossible for them to win. No big names in there and I also don`t really know who they are
Flecha must feel very well as most Sky riders doing the pace here. They do 90% of the whole work. We will see later if Flecha can do something.
At the half of the race 6 riders attacked and joined the break after a short time. This time it`s more dangerous as the distance is less and the cobble skills of these riders are way better.
Posthuma (Rabobank), Van Avermaet (Omega), Guldhammer (Leopard), Ista (Cofidis), Ballan (Lampre) and Willems (Liquigas). So a few top 10 favourites in this group now with a 3min advance.
As expected the peloton splits a lot on the hills. Just 4 Garmin riders left in this group. Maaskant, Haussler, Vansummeren and Van Der Velde, who struggles already a bit as he is protecting Maaskant.
The 6 new attackers lead the race now. The old group couldn`t follow their pace and felt back into the "peloton".
Our 3 leaders looked quite good on the cobbles but on the last hill without pavement I made a big mistake. I wasn`t that concentrated and so they felt back. Just Maaskant was able to find contact again but now he is a bit more exhausted of course.
This is definitely not our race once more again.
With 6km to go the 6 riders are still leading the race, where Willems has a small gap.
S.Devolder, F.Pozzato, S.Langeveld and some others attack and will catch the group soon. Maaskant is still waiting as he is a bit tired and also because Cancellara and Boonen aren`t following.
Might have been the wrong decision as he wasn`t able to close the gap again.
Matti Breschel takes the win. Obviously Leopard had the same tactic than in Paris Roubaix last year. All were focused on Cancellara and Breschel takes the win.
Van Avermaet with a strong 2nd after his escape ahead of Ista.
Maaskant just finished 18th a few places ahead of Vansummeren and Haussler.
But in the last years we also did very bad here and then won Gent Wevelgem. So it might be a good sign.

roturn: Top class story continues, the third season is having a fairly mixed start. The results are enjoyable - MSR is a really difficult one I just cannot get a sprinter up there - only chance I have is with a super rouler.
Great work with the variants - in real life Catalunya needs a kick up the butt too.
I find E3 and Omloop tricky as well, it's not a problem really as one is trying to leave the best form until the Flanders triple G-W, RvV and PR. Unfortunately the AI is not necessarily governed by the same rules (or they have the riders peaking earlier as we saw with Martin).

Thanks a lot.
At least one more report today I think. Will have to play it first.
My riders won`t be good enough for the triple I think, especially not on extreme, but I would also be happy with winning GW again and get top5 - top10 in the two other races.
I don`t know how hard they are on extreme.

Criterium International - Stage 2
Porto-Vecchio - Porto-Vecchio
I know I said this variant isn`t as hard as the 2010 version. But after a second look on it I changed my opinion.
As the stage is just 92km short the climbs are much steeper than it looks on the profile. The big difference to the old version is that the longest climb isn`t the finish as there are 2 shorter climbs afterwards. But the long mountain should already split the favourites.
8 riders with an early attack. Calzati (FDJ), Gallego (Euskaltel), Jeandesboz (Roubaix), Parisien (Planet Energy), Delfosse (Landbouwkrediet), Sulzberger (Fly V), Beppu (RadioShack) and Harbonnier (Differdange). None of them is really a climbing specialist.
Saur Sojasun is doing all work in the peloton. With Coppel and Hivert they have two talented French riders for a top10 here. Especially Coppel wants more than this I think.
The long climb just started when Leopard shocked most teams. The roads became narrow and at that point they sent 4 riders to the front and so they created a gap. (Schleck, Evans, Kruijswijk, Szmyd) Just Coppel, Hivert and surprisingly Vaugrenard were able to follow. No HTC or Garmin rider there.
Hesjedal and Stetina immediately accelerated but with 26km to go and no more helpers left it will be hard for them to catch all the Leopard riders. This was really a nice move by them.
Calzati (FDJ) will get caught soon, while the next riders are the Saur Sojasun duo. Harder to join them.
In the end no one was able to follow Andy Schleck as expected. Just Hesjedal and Coppel with a similar speed, so it is really a pity that Hesjedal is still so far behind.
The next group is around Szmyd, Evans and Vaugrenard. The French is a very big surprise here as he has just 69mo but obviously he is in a great form.
Andy wins the stage dominantly. Behind him many solo riders and small group finish with several minutes back. No group bigger than 4 riders in the top 30 shows how hard the stage actually was.
With Evans and Szmyd Leopard with a perfect podium today. Hesjedal finished 8th with almost 4min back. What a pity as he looked much stronger today.
Stetina just felt of the top 10 on the 11th while Duggan as 14th did also very well.
