Garmin - End of 3rd Season - Continue in PCM11
baia
Nice team..

roturn
Indeed. Hopefully they get some wildcards for bigger races this season. Otherwise most of them won`t participate a lot.
Serpa and Sörensen are at least starting here in Catalunya.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/voltaacatalunyalogo.jpg

The race is held since 1911 and is most times dominated by Spanish cyclists.
Next to the Vuelta a Pais Vasco it`s one of the most important regional races in Spain.
Record winner is Mariano Cañardo with seven wins between 1928 and 1939.

Kessiakoff fought very well last year but in the end the prologue was way too important as there weren`t big gaps on the other stages.

That`s why I changed the route a bit. Instead of the 3rd hilly/mountain stage with a long descent I added Pellizotti`s hard mountain stage into the race. This will make it much harder to win the race as there will definitely be big time gaps. Unfortunately it`s harder to win for us now Wink

Garmin squad in 2012
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/Team.jpg
Jakob Fuglsang will be our leader here. Peterson and hopefully also Löw will help him over the mountains. A top 10 is our goal but with a bit luck a top 5 could also be possible.
Rojas Gil will be the man for the sprints. He have big support with Meyer and Felline. Lars Boom will also help him but as also Felline with some freedom. Both will get a chance to attack. But especially Boom is going for the leader jersey after the prologue although this won`t be easy as his form isn`t perfect and specialists like Martin or Wiggins are also participating.

Favourites

***** Contador
**** Nibali, Basso
*** Wiggins, Gesink, Van Den Broeck
** Martin, Monfort, Menchov, Karpets
* Velits, Fuglsang, Moreno, Cataldo, Cobo Acebo

The favourites are really strong here and could almost be a GT start list. But not all riders might have a top form yet, so we hope to reach a lot with Fuglsang. Top favourite of course is Alberto Contador as he could be able to win the hard mountain top finish and the prologue. It will be interesting to see the new Lampre duo Nibali/Basso.
How can Tony Martin perform after last years win? Top favourite for the prologue but definitely not on the mountain stage. But also Wiggins, Gesink and Van Den Broeck could do very well on the mountain stage. Will be an interesting race.

In the sprints it could be a battle between Rojas, Sutton, Bonnet, Viviani and Ventoso to name just some.

Volta a Catalunya - Stage 1/Prologue
Lloret de Mar - Lloret de Mar
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/1-1.jpg
The race starts with a 4km prologue in Lloret de Mar. Most important is to lose as less time as possible with Fuglsang and also a nice result with Boom.
Also Meyer and Millar could do well here.
It will also give a first sign how the form of the favourites is at the moment.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/1-2.jpg
Richie Porte is riding with his normal team shirt again after one year as World Champion. With a good form he can do well here. But his time won`t be enough. He might have to help Gesink this time.
6'28

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/1-3.jpg
David Millar beats all earlier times and takes the lead. This was a very good prologue by the Brit. Of course most specialists haven`t started yet but faster than Westra or Porte is definitely not bad.
6'21

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/1-4.jpg
Tony Martin is starting very early as Monfort has the last HTC slot today. The German champion really showed how strong he is and is the first rider under 6 minutes. Brilliant ride. Not sure if anyone can beat this time.
5'53

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/1-5.jpg
Lars Boom is the next. Great to see him in the rainbow shirt. He is a known prologue specialist but as he is still building a top form it will be hard to bet the German. He beated Millar but no chance to come close to Martin.
6'17

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/1-6.jpg
Ivan Basso, Italian timetrial champion, will fight for the leadership with Nibali and Cunego over the season. Today he lost much time and Nibali should win the first team "fight".
6'46

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/1-7.jpg
Fuglsang is the next. He is riding in the Dane champion jersey and surprisingly he beats Boom and sets the 2nd best time. Great result for him as he isn`t known as a very good time trialist.
6'16

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/1-8.jpg
Van Den Broeck had a very season in 2011 after being injured for 60% of the year. So he missed all his big goals. So he is extra motivated to get many big results this year.He will lsoe some time today but his real strenght is climbing in the hard mountains.
6'24

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/1-9.jpg
Robert Gesink left the Rabobank team and joined Leopard Trek. Together with Andy Schleck, Evans, Porte and Gerdemann he is forming a great stage race quintett. We will see later how they participate in the biggest races.
But in Catalunya he should be the leader ahead of Porte.
6'24

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/1-10.jpg
Another big favourite for the whole race and todays stage. The British champion Bradley Wiggins is still a great climber and time trialist. He beats Fuglsang`s time by 4s and is 2nd now.
6'12

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/1-11.jpg
The Giro dominator of 2011 changed teams and rides for Lampre-ISD now. Not the best time for him but same as Basso and Van Den Broeck. The mountains should suit him much better.
6'22

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/1-12.jpg
And another champion jersey as seen many today. Alberto Contador shows that his form is good and finished 2nd behind Martin but ahead of Wiggins.
6'09

It`s a great result for us with 3 riders in the top 10 and especially Fuglsang showed that his form is very good.
But also most other favourites showed some very good form. So it wil be very hard for us to beat them on the third stage. But it was just a prologue and it can be totally different in the next days.

impressive win for Martin, good start for Fuglsang

baia
Great stage from Fuglsang, beating his teammate Boom...will be very interesting to see that new stage...

roturn
Thanks both.

Actually Pellizotti already played this stage some days ago. Hope Fuglsang can keep his form and get a good result there as there are many better climbers here.

Volta a Catalunya - Stage 2
Salt - Banyoles
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/2-1.jpg
The first real stage is for the sprinters. After some climbing on the first third the course ends on a town circuit in Banyoles, which is a bit hilly. Hopefully Rojas can do great today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/2-2.jpg
Just 2 riders in the group of the day. Montenegro (Andalucia) and Ljungblad (Omega). It`s very windy and so most riders wanted to "relax" in the peloton.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/2-3.jpg
Löw is doing the pace for Garmin. With 70km the maximum advance was at 5'30. HTC and Lampre aren`t helping yet but they will on the last 40km.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/2-4.jpg
With 13km to go the two riders gets caught and the sprint preparation will start soon.

Boom takes the lead of our train ahead of Felline and Rojas. Up to 5km it looked good but then they felt back a bit when the other trains had more speed. So Boom decided to hang on Bonnet to come forward.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/2-5.jpg
Sutton wins a very close sprint ahead of Ventoso. With Reynes and Freire two more Spaniards on the next places.
Felline as 7th and Rojas as 9th were doing ok but actually we hoped for a bit more with our Spaniard. Hopefully he can do better on the other flat stages here. Today it was just bad positioning as Boom couldn`t bring him to the first row due to his average fitness.
Time to learn to sprint again I think.

But in the end we saw that the peloton was splitted due to the wind. Many favourites lost almost 2 minutes here. Van Den Broeck, Velits, Nibali, Monfort, Le Mevel, Karpets, Menchov, Basso, Soler and Serpa were all in this 2nd group.

Volta a Catalunya - Stage 3
Ripoll - Ordino Arcalis
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/3-1.jpg
Big thanks to Pellizotti for this nice stage. Really appreciated as the original edition is just a prologue Wink
After 2 smaller climbs with about 8km and 3 and 6% in average the riders expect two very hard climbs.
The first onto the Alto de la Ramassa with 18,7km and 7,6% might still be ridden in an medium speed. But then the final climb onto Ordino Arcalis with 14km and 7,4% in average will cause many attacks and some time gaps I think.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/3-2.jpg
Novoa (Euskaltel), Downing (Sky), Failli (Farnese), Cabello (Andalucia) and Reda (Quick) are the group of the day. Unfortunately Felline wasn`t allowed to join the group as other teams did a fast pacfe then.
All of these riders were in a later group yesterday and have more than +3min to Martin.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/3-3.jpg
HTC is doing a lot of work in the peloton. Tony Martin isn`t the strongest climber here but with a great form he could defend his jersey. At least that`s what HTC hopes.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/3-4.jpg
The 5 riders reach the Alto de la Ramassa. Many fans wait for their favourite riders. Now the fight for the stage win can begin.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/3-5.jpg
Also the peloton enters the climb and immediately weaker climbers fall back. Meyer and Boom were our first riders in later groups. Then Löw is already on the very end of the main group. We expected a bit more actually. Rojas Gil is also falling back soon, while Millar and Felline are still working a lot for Peterson and Fuglsang.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/3-6.jpg
Francesco Failli wins the mountain sprint while Downing already lost contact to them. But also the peloton isn`t far away.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/3-7.jpg
Moinard with an early attack on the final climb. Cobo Acebo and Cataldo try to follow but they peloton don`t allow it this time.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/3-8.jpg
With a bit more than 5km to go HTC is still doing a high pace. Martin must feel very strong as he is always riding in the first rows. Also Fuglsang is still doing well and just a few meters behind him. Unfortunately Peterson couldn`t follow with 8km to go and Fuglsang is alone now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/3-9.jpg
With 4km to go the leader attacks and just Moreno can follow immediately. Cobo Acebo and Contador are coming next ahead of Wiggins and Fuglsang. Behind them the big group around other favourites is coming, while many riders always try to jump to the front.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/3-10.jpg
Tony Martin was the strongest today. Unbelievable result for him. His climbing skills aren`t better than Fuglsang`s actually as also Moreno, who finished on a strong 2nd.
The next group was lead by the strong French Moinard with Contador and Cobo Acebo.
Fuglsang is coming next with the first a bit bigger group around most other favourites.
But biggest disappointment was Lampre-ISD. Nibali, Basso and Loosli finished all with almost 7 minutes back. Not the best result for the Italian duo.

Tony Martin rode a motorcycle today. Smile

Pellizotti2
Nice stage. Pfft

I think I made the slopes a bit too easy, though.

Martin must be in the form of his life. He might be out of power in July/August again Wink

@ Pellizotti: Indeed a very nice stage but really no hard parts at all, where splits can happen Wink But much better than the official "shit".

Anonymer
looks like Martin has a good chance to defend his victory from last year, also not too bad result by fuglsang, top10 overall is alright

Martin's stats would be interesting to know...

tsmoha
I will definitely use this stage in my career, too Smile.. not the best stage for Garmin, but Fuglsang still in good position.. and... Martin.. unbelievable Smile

roturn
Thanks both.

@Anonymer:
Quite sure that Martin will keep the lead as the other stages are the original Cyanide crap stages, where all stages end in a minimum 30 rider group.
With the strong startlist Fuglsang is indeed doing quite well. Maybe also a bit luck that some riders lost time on the flat stage.

@Tsmoha:
It wasn`t really bad for us actually. Except of 5 riders Fuglsang ended in the first bigger group. With his stats and on extreme this was definitely the maximum. He is 77mo and 75hi.
I was just surprised that Martin and Moreno (both 77mo) and Moinard (76mo) were that strong even after attacking earlier on the stage. Not even national bonus except of Moreno.

Some new information about variants.
Just found the 1998 Tour de Romandie variant made by Kissaha and the 2009 Pais Vasco variant made by Dimitri22.
Both will be played this season.
Sanchez will try his luck in Pais Vasco while Martin rides in the Romandie.

baia
Fuglsang did good, top 5 still possible...Martin showing really great form, maybe too early?...

roturn
Top 5 will be hard as there is less chance for favourite`s attack in Cataluncya normally.
Martin is in form at the best moment I think. He can`t win a GT or the big classics. So he takes the races he is perfect for like Paris Nice, Tirreno, Catalunya, some smaller February races and so on.

Volta a Catalunya - Stage 4
Oliana - Ascó
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/4-1.jpg
Although there are two hills in the end it`s hard to attack as there is always a long descent afterwards. We will try to get into the break of the day.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/4-2.jpg
Felline was our first choice but he was caught again and so it was Rojas with an successful attack but also just with his 2nd attempt.
Several riders are within this group.
The most popular might be Kump (Liquigas), Frapporti (Farnese), Valentin (FDJ), Turgot (Europcar) and Gutiérrez Palacios (Euskaltel).
Rojas is the best rider in this group with +15'11.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/4-3.jpg
HTC, Andalucia and RadioShack are doing the pace but just a very slow one, so the advance increases very fast.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/4-4.jpg
On top of the hill on the first lap the group splitted. Rojas is still in the group as expected as he is one of the better hilly riders.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/4-5.jpg
Going back to the peloton I was surprised that Tony Martin and his team mate Monfort had a gap of 90s to them. Obviously he was stronger than the rest. But also it became very dangerous for him. With 60km to go the advance was 15'36 and Rojas was in the virtual leader jersey. So Martin had to react.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/4-6.jpg
After the 2nd climb the group splitted again. Frapporti and Kump were leading now, while Rojas and Turgot were chasing with jsut a few meters behind. Can Rojas reach the two leaders? He would be the best sprinter of them.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/4-7.jpg
Frapporti takes the win ahead of the better sprinter Kump. Both of them did very well today. Rojas wins the sprint ahead of Turgot with 14s back and takes the last bonus seconds.
The advance was still big on top of the hill. Now he has to wait for the peloton to know how much time he will gain.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/03%20March/Catalunya/4-8.jpg
Who else but Tony Martin should win the sprint. But what does the time say? +15'19 to Rojas. That`s really a big surprise.
Rojas Gil will take the overall lead ahead of Martin and Contador. Big result for him. Hopefully he can defend it on the next hard stage. Especially the bonus seconds could play a big role now.
