I think he still isn't feeling 100% after his crash(es), no other explanation. When he was in the breakaway, he was beaten by guys he shouldn't have any sort of problem with, under normal circumstances. What might play in to it as well though is saving energy for the Tour, where it really counts. He will most likely be Contadors best helper there.
Kreuziger and Rogers will be Contador's best helpers in the mountains. For tempo pacing, they have Sutherland, Tosatto and the likes. Sutherland was great at Tirreno. Maybe Breschel for the pavé. Roche should ride Vuelta and go for his own chances, I just don't see him helping Contador in significant manner, but of course, I'd be happy if he proves me wrong. Since Tinkoff and Contador want that TdF win, they probably take Roche with them anyway.
He never appeared to me as a guy who goes to great lenghts for his captain. Last year, at le Tour, I remember him showing up once and even then, Paulinho was more determined than him in my opinion to make the tactic work. However, later in the Vuelta, he was riding out of his shoes and really great. He's just not cut out for domestique work. Talented and gifted, and able to score some great results, but lacking the abililty and will to "sacrifice" himself for the captain. That may be it. Maybe that comes when you're the son of such a famous cyclist like Stephen.
EDIT I also don't think he was particularly trained and formed to be a domestique at AG2R La Mondiale?

Roche and Rogers both in the break. This will either br one of the best tactical moves of the Giro or a huge failure. Would love to see the break getting a big advantage and Nico taking the win.
When is the peleton expected to start the Zoncolan?

Ok, I know it's a bit early to make sumaries but let's just look how each stage contributed to distance between Uran and Quintana:
Stage | Type | Stars | Difference | 1 Belfast | TTT | +++ | +0:50 | 2 Belfast | flat | ++ | 0:00 | 3 Dublin | flat | + | 0:00 | 4 Bari | flat | + | 0:00 | 5 Viggiano | hill | +++ | 0:00 | 6 Monte Cassino | uphill | ++ | 0:00 | 7 Foligno | flat | ++ | 0:00 | 8 Monte Copiolo | uphill | ++++ | -0:02 | 9 Sestola | uphill | +++ | 0:00 | 10 Salsomaggiore | flat | + | 0:00 | 11 Savona | flat | +++ | 0:00 | 12 Barolo | ITT | ++++ | +2:41 | 13 Rivarolo | flat | ++ | 0:00 | 14 Oropa | uphill | ++++ | -0:25 | 15 Monte Campione | uphill | ++++ | -0:24 | 16 Marteltal | uphill | +++++ | -4:11 | 17 Vittorio Veneto | flat | ++ | 0:00 | 18 Pinarotta | uphill | ++++ | 0:00 | 19 Cime Grappa | MTT | +++++ | -1:26 |
As you can see stages awarded with most stars by the official site didn't usually make a difference.
Looks like we have to forget about the myth that Grand Tours are won on the mountains. It's no that simple. Excluding Cime Grappa and Marteltal Quintana has barely made up enough seconds uphill to cover time lost in Belfast TTT (-51 sec to +50 sec). 2:41 lost by Quintana in first ITT looks almost unattackable in this context.

Why huge failure??? Majka has a 3:26 Gap on Evans so I cant se him losing any time to Evans but isnt feeling good and shouldnt be able to attack Pozzovivo so doesnt need to much help for this stage. Its not like Roche and Rogers r going to be able to stay with him till the GC guys decide to attack anyway. |

Tbh, there isnt much tactical going on on Zoncolan. It's just about who is the strongest |

Nope, it's Cataldo. And about the tactics discussion: Ofcourse it's about who's strongest, but surely having helpers with you in the early phases isn't a bad thing, because tbh I don't think they will help much as a relais station.
EDIT: My point has just been proven invalid.

It was Rolland. Rider No 161 is him. |
