Therefore some other riders will leave us. Millar (retires), Meier, Wilson, Hunter (looking for smaller teams in their last pro years), Fischer (probably to Scott as they already showed interest), Duggan, Lowe (still unsure as they don`t have much potential left) and also Rojas. (I know he is quite good but with Farrar, Haussler, Goss and soon also Dao I have 4 great sprinters, but still considering this one)
The Vuelta Ciclista a Murcia is a 5-day-stage race held in Spain. It leads over some flat stages, one less difficult mountain stage and a timetrial. It was first held in 1981 and since then several Spaniards won this race. But the last Spanish win was already in 2008 where Valverde won this race the third time what is also the race record.
Result in 2011
1 | Andrea Noe | Ceramica Flaminia | 2 | Javier Ramirez | Andalucia - CajaSur | 3 | Oscar Puyol Munoz | Team Saxobank - Sungard | 4 | Sergio Pardilla | Carmiooro NGC | 5 | Diego Gallego | Burgos 2016 - Castilla y Leon | 6 | Phillip Mamos | Team Sparkasse | 7 | Guillaume Levarlet | Saur Sojasun | 8 | Rafael Valls | Team Geox | 9 | Vasil Kiryenka | Team Movistar | 10 | Nelson Vitorino | Palmeiras Resort - Prio |
After winning this race with David Millar in 2010 we had no luck in 2011. Farrar had 2 stage wins but Zabriskie couldn`t perform vey well.
Garmin squad in 2012
Also Hesjedal is one of the best climbers in the peloton he won`t win here as the timetrial is very important as the mountain stage is not hard enough. (Rabon beated Menchov... in real, Roberts won mountain stage without attacking) He is also not in the best shape but needs the race days for Tirreno.
So David Millar will try his luck again after 2010 but he decreased a lot since then. Also Felline can ride on his own as he could surprise with his good form.
Bobridge and Meyer are our best rider for the time trial, while Dao and especially Goss will lead our team in the flat stages. Lowe is supporting as much as possible.

Brajkovic and Rogers might be the strognest stage racer in the peloton but especially Clement with his time trial skills could be a big contender, too. All other riders are just average climbers and average time trialists. So the fitness is very important here.
I will probably do the 5 stages in just 2-3 reports. |

Noo, Fischer has gone! Pretty bad.
Anyway, good luck for Vuelta a Murcia. If not Hesjedal or Millar, hoping for Brajkovic to take it

He will still ride for the whole season and I am just in March
But he is quite old now and nothing more but an average helper with this stats.
I need free slots for young talents. Maybe he can have 1 good season with a smaller team like Scott before retiring from cycling. |

Vuelta a Murcia - Stage 1-3
San Pedro del Pinatar - Lorca
The first stage is for the sprinters. Goss hopes for a win today as he should be the best sprinter. But with Petersen, Freire or Wyss there are also other good riders.
Several riders with an early attack. Bertolini (Androni), Izagirre (Orbea), Cabello (Andalucia), Erviti (Movistar) to name the most famous, which also share the KoM points today.
It was a calm day for our team as Xacobeo did a high pace today. So there was never the danger of a breakaway win.
Oscar Freire takes the win. Unfortunately Goss was blocked in the end and couldn`t overtake some weaker sprinters. We`ll try again tomorrow.
Result

Las Torres de Cotillas - Caravaca
The 2nd stage is already quite hilly. It leads two times over a hilly circuit, but with the long descent it should be a sprint finish again.
Again a big group attacked early and had a maximum advance of 6min.
Roth (Planet Energy), Marque Porto (Palmeiras), Antuña (Café), Azanza (Euskaltel), Ilundain (Orbea), Christensen (Carmiooro) to name some of them.
The sprint worked much better today but in the end Goss was beated by Wyss. The Saxobank rider won a vey close sprint ahead of the Australian and Freire, who shows some great performance at the end of his career.
Also Felline with his 2nd top10 in a row.

Alhama de Murcia - Alhama de Murcia
The 3rd stage will show the big favourites, which will decide the overall in tomorrows timetrial. We expect a smaller group in the end with 15-40 riders. Hopefully Millar will be in there to have a good standing. Also Felline could go for the win here as he is quite good in sprint and climbing.
Hesjedal will help today as also Lowe.
Todays group is much stronger than the others. Tondo (Palmeiras), Valls (Geox) and Pardilla (Carmiooro) are all quite good climbers and shouldn`t be allowed to get a big gap.
On the long climb with 5km and 5,6% and then 7km with more than 7% in average the peloton splitted a lot. As expected just our 4 better climbers stayed in the first group with 27 riders. Tondo is just caught while Valls and especially Pardilla are still riding solo a few seconds ahead of the peloton.
Hesjedal is our leader in most races but today he works very well and is doing the pace quite alone on the final 20km but at least the advance melts a lot.
Surprisingly the yellow jersey of Danilo Wyss was still in this group and finishes as 2nd behind Pardilla, who saved some meters after a long attack. Great win for him today but with several bonus seconds, Wyss is definitely becoming dangerous here. He must be in a damn good form as Goss struggled a lot today and they are quite similar in climbing.
Unfortunately Felline didn`t found a good position in the end and lost several positions for some reason and couldn`t go for the win.

Luckily some contenders are gone after the 3rd stage. Bouet, Ten Dam, Plaza and Zubeldia, who crashed.
Rogers is doing the pace for Clement, so he might be hard to beat.
But Millar should do much better than Felline I think. |

Just caught up here roturn - LL Sanchez's successes seem to born out of the now comfortable coach-rider relations.
Obviously good in early season races in one thing - teasing out results in the Paris Nice, Tirrano, Cobbles, MSR and Ardennes are quite another. Especially in Extreme. Best of luck there, look forward to reading the final preparations!

Thanks. Totally agree with you. February races are always quite easy.
Last year I had 2 months without any victory in April/May. Hope this won`t happen again. |

The Montepaschi Strade Bianche is an Italian one day classic. The profile is very hilly and famous for the white gravel roads. In general many riders are participating that are also in Tirreno Adriatico a few days later. It was first held in 2007 and immediately the starting field was quite popular.

Garmin squad in 2012
Vansummeren will lead our team. He is in a good form as he will be Sanchez`most important helper in Paris Nice. Fuglsang needs some form after all his crashes and the course could be too hard for Haussler and Maaskant without a perfect form.

Gaiole - Siena
It`s not the easiest parcours with several small and steep climbs. Plus the fact that the roads aren`t very good on many points.
The peloton is the first time on the gravels. A few meters ahead several riders try to escape but several teams doing a high pace now.
After 25km the a group was allowed to ride. No big names in it.
Again a Garmin rider on the asphalt. The luck isn`t on our side this season. Almost more crashes that early in the season than in the whole last one. And even worse. It`s our leader Vansummeren ;(
And the Miche rider isn`t very helpful riding exactly into where the pain is the biggest.
After this crash he had big problems on most climbs. Also Fuglsang had these problems. So it`s not very surprising that Vansummeren was our first rider that felt back into a later group. Löw is supporting him as good as possible. This is so bad so close to his first season peak with Paris Nice, MSR and Gent Wevelgem.
Burghardt and Failli with an attack. But this might be way too early as it`s still 60km to go. Also Mollema, Boonen and some other riders tried it between the 80 and 60 km mark.
The field splits more and more and this is the biggest surprise. Just Danny Pate is able to stay in the group and even feels quite good. Until the crash he preotected Vansummeren and then Haussler. But noticing that his form is quite good and a +5 daily form they changed roles and Haussler protected him. Maaskant was also quite well but felt back on one climb.
Another attack and just 8km to go. Cataldo, Efimkin were the first. Burghardt and also Pate try to follow. This is definitely one of the best races so far by the American.
With just 1km to go these 4 riders have still a small gap but the peloton is coming closer.
Cataldo celebrates the 2nd win in the row here and is the first rider with two wins for the records. Also Efimkin survived the attack and becomes 2nd. Burghardt and Pate were overtaken unfortunately. But his performance was actually stronger than his 14th shows.
I also think it was a good choice to renew Cataldo`s contract with Quickstep and not allow him to go to Cafe Colombia
Only important thing for us is to hope that Vansummeren won`t be that handicaped for Paris Nice and Fuglsang gets well soon before Tirreno.

Nice to hear that you like it. Not 100% sure on what page I posted his stats the last time. But he is quite similar I think. 76mo, 78hi, 73prl, 68TT.
So he is also a candidate for the Ardennes top10. |

Before the last report of the Murcia Chellenge I start with the Paris Nice presentation and probably the prologue first as I haven`t played the 5th stage yet.
Paris Nice or "the race to the sun" is a Pro Tour race in March. It leads from Paris to Nice in 7 stages.
The most successful cyclist in Paris Nice was Sean Kelly from Ireland. He won seven consecutive titles (1982–1988).
Result in 2011
1 | Luis León Sánchez Gil | Garmin - Cervelo | 2 | Philippe Gilbert | Liquigas - Cannondale | 3 | Peter Sagan | Liquigas - Cannondale | 4 | Tony Martin | Team HTC - Highroad | 5 | Juan Jose Cobo Acebo | Team Movistar | 6 | Benoît Vaugrenard | FDJ | 7 | Fränk Schleck | Leopard - Trek | 8 | Peter Velits | Team HTC - Highroad | 9 | Samuel Sánchez | Euskaltel - Euskadi | 10 | Nicolas Roche | Ag2r La Mondiale |
LL Sanchez did really great last year and he is here to defend his title. But except of Cobo Acebo and Roche all other top 10 riders are here again to stop him.
The route in 2012
Thanks to Nole for this variant. Jsut found it and immediately integrated it.
The course is a bit more hilly than the last, so it will be hard for Gilbert, Sagan or Vaugrenard to repeat a top 10, but we will see.
Garmin squad in 2012
Sanchez of course will lead our team in France. He is also one of the top favourites for the race. Normally Vansummeren was expected to be his last support but after his crash he is handicaped a lot. Our doc allowed him to race but we can`t expect much. Hopefully it will be better from day to day.
So Stetina is asked even more to take his role. Of course he will support Sanchez very good.
With Haussler and Hunter we can also play a very good role on the flat stages.

Favourites
Overall
***** F.Schleck
**** LL Sanchez, S. Sanchez
*** Anton, Van Garderen, Cunego
** Martin, Velits, Leipheimer, Taaramae
* Gerdemann, Chavanel, Barredo, Coppel, Casar
Sprints
*** Greipel
** Haussler, Davis
* Sagan, Steegmans, Breschel
What a starting field here. Many big names. Not even enough free slots in the favourite lists to name all. Frank Schleck is the big favourite and he already showed in Andalucia that his form is good. With Knees, Velits and Vinokourov he has a nice support.
But especially Garmin, Euskaltel and HTC will try to challenge him.
The French hope is on Coppel and Casar. Both of them are good for a top 10 but it won`t be enough for the win or the podium I think. Better chances maybe for Taaramae, who is riding for the French Cofidis l'équipe.

Unfortunately it was hard to get a top time on this stage as some ITT`s seem to have this problem. But read yourself.
Paris - Nice - Stage 1
Provins - Provins
Also this years Paris - Nice starts with a bit hilly prologue. Can Sanchez as prologue specialist gain time today? The big favourite is of course Tony Martin.
First of the favourites is the US American Tejay Van Garderen. A shame that we couldn`t sign him as he increased a bit again (78mo, 75tt). But looking on his time he might not be in a great form.
12'04
Next one is Peter Velits. The young rider with a quite time. He beats Van Garderen by 18s.
11'46
Anton isn`t known as a great time trialist but his talent in the mountains are well known. So he is definitely a favourite here. But we have to see if he or Sanchez takes the leader role.
12'09
Jerome Coppel, one of France big hope for this race. A good time for him.
11'40
And directly behind him the other French favourite. Sandy Casar changed teams and rides for Team Movistar now as also his former team mate Le Mevel.
12'00
Linus Gerdemann leads Leopard - Trek in Paris-Nice. He is not a top favourite but he showed several times in the past that he can fight a lot to stay in the first group. Definitely a guy to take care of, what also his time proves.
11'37
The Estonian Rein Taaramae seems to be in a great shape. Although he isn`t the best time trialist he beats most of the others today.
11'36
But now the big favourite is coming and of course he destroys all former times. This is an stunning time by the German. 17s faster than Leipheimer and Taaramae, who were first before. It won`t be easy to get these seconds back from him.
11'19
Damiano Cunego had a great season in 2010, when he won the Giro. In 2011 Ivan Basso rode together with him for Lampre and for some reason Cunego wasn`t in the team`s squad for all 3 GT`s. But with excellent results in several other races he was still in the top 10 of the CQ Ranking afterwards. With a good result here he might qualify for a GT again.
11'47
Samuel Sanchez is coming next. This year could be the time where Anton spells him at being the first GT contender as Sanchez isn`t getting younger.
His time isn`t that good today.
11'56
Now it`s time for LL Sanchez. He starts with the aim to defend the title. Although his form is good and he had a good ride here he can`t come that close to Martin. He must be happy with a placement somewhere in between all favourites, which are very close together.
11'45
Last but not least is Frank Schleck. Hopefully we can take revenge for the Andalucia stage. He is also in the middle of the favourites.
11'49
As you can see, most of my riders lost qutie a lot time although they aren`t that bad in prologues like Haussler or Hunter. Weird ITT here but nothing lost yet. Except of Martin all contenders are around Sanchez. This Paris Nice will be decided in the mountains.
But the worst thing is that the ITT was defined as classic finish, so Martin gets 20s, Leipheimer 12 and Taaramae 8. Hopefully these unnecessary bonus seconds won`t play a role in the end.

Those small ITTs and TTTs are very annoying...but 26" lost it´s ok,if there is time bonus then is Sánchez with 46" ? |

Unfortunately yes ;(
Quite a good advance for Martin, but same problem for all favourites. Leipheimer could struggle on the hills. Taaramae also dangerous now. |

Vuelta a Murcia - Stages 4+5
San Pedro del Pinatar - San Pedro del Pinatar
A medium timetrial will bring the decision in the overall. Hopefully Millar can get a nice result here. Everything is still possible, so a top5 would be realyl nice for him.
Jack Bobridge beats his team mate Cameron Meyer and gets the new best time.
30'06
Gutierrez beats him by 11s. A good ride for the Spaniard, who is still in the fight for the overall.
29'55
But nobody was able to beat Stef Clement. He wins with a big advance and takes the yellow jersey.
29'06
Unfortunately Millar was a small disappointment. With a daily form of -3 he just finished 15th. At least 10th in the overall for him. But with a fitness of 92 we expected a bit more.
Result
1 | Stef Clement | Rabobank | 29'06 | 2 | José Iván Gutiérrez | Team Movistar | + 49 | 3 | Jack Bobridge | Garmin - Cervelo | + 1'00 | 4 | Rui Alberto Fario Da Costa | Team Movistar | + 1'01 | 5 | Janez Brajkovic | Team RadioShack | s.t. | 6 | Beñat Intxausti | Euskaltel - Euskadi | + 1'06 | 7 | Cameron Meyer | Garmin - Cervelo | + 1'07 | 8 | Artem Ovechkin | Euskaltel - Euskadi | + 1'09 | 9 | Andriy Grivko | Astana | + 1'11 | 10 | Gustavo César Veloso | Xacobeo Galicia | + 1'12 |
San Javier - Murcia
It`s the final day. Clement in yellow. It will be hard to get him our of this on this stage. Maybe a chance for Goss.
11 riders in the breakaway. Bobridge is one of them. After yesterdays good result he wants another one today.
20km. Several teams are doing the pace now. Still 1'40 for the group.
Bobridge attacks as the peloton is dangerously close now. Can he accelerate enough? Two other riders are following him.
They were caught with 3km to go. Pity for him.
Oscar Freire with his 2nd stage win. Goss is again on the 2nd. Felline on 4 completes a good daily result.
Millar will stay on 10. A bit less than expected but still a good result for him.

Ahm... is it only me or can't I see any of the pics posted in imageshack?

I can see all pictures.

I believe you've an imageshack account? If yes then I think you should indeed be able to see. But only for that, given I host my images in imageshack too but can't see even my own images (in my story) 'cause I've got no account.
