He isn't better than irl in PCM. It's just that in PCM the riders don't need to preserve energy for their main races. A rider who would try to go for a podium in MSR would never go for 3 stage wins and GC in PN..

Yeah, but in real live, Gilbert will not win de Ronde in 2012, even not if he could aim for it full!

The day after Liege - Bastogne - Liege, we take part in Rund Um Köln, a one day race in Germany near the historic city of Köln. The route is hilly, and pretty tough. In PCM, the route of the GP Plouay is used.
We have very good memories about this race, as last year we got a 1-2, with Pim Ligthart & Andy Schleck .

The favourites
*** Robert Gesink, Peter Sagan , Chris Anker Sorensen (Saxo Bank)
** Sébastien Joly (Saur), Stefan Schumacher (Pisanellastoria), Jonathan Castroviejo (Euskaltel)
* Davide Rebellin (Pisanellastoria), Gustav Erik Larsson (Saxo Bank), Rob Ruijgh
Our goal
The win.
The race
We immediately jump to the last passage of the finish line, entering the last lap. There have been a few attacks earlier in the race, including a few attempts by Rob Ruijgh , who was to dangerous for the Saxo Bank and CCC-team to let go. The last serious attack was by Team Concordia's Rasmus Guldhammer, but also fruitless.
The route is very tough with a lot of short steep hills and also the weather is terrible, so the race is one big battlefield. Also because we decided to make it even harder by setting a high pace, a group of only 21 riders enters the last lap, including most of the favourites. 78 of the 164 riders that started the race, won't finish it!
Then an attack on the second to last climb, 9 kilometres before the finish. Marcos GarcÃa (Euskaltel) is the initiator, and he gets followed by 4 others, namely Sébastien Joly (Saur), Mateusz Komar (CCC), Stefan Schumacher (Pisanellastoria) and Chris Anker Sorensen (Saxo Bank). No riders from our team? Correct, we think that these 5 will blow themselves up, so we let Poels & Ruijgh set a high pace.
But that's the wrong choice. The 5 create a gap of 30 seconds and even before the last climb starts, Robert Gesink has to do the pace himself, with Peter Sagan in his wheel. But they won't make it! Up front, Danish Chris Anker Sorensen has used to last climb to attack and has a gap of about 15 seconds entering the last kilometre.
While Sorensen celebrates his first win of the season, Joly finishes in 2nd at '16 and Gesink & Sagan are able to pass the other members of the breakaway and finish in 3rd and 4th.

Word from the DS
Although the team result is very good, with 4 riders in the top 10 and 6 in the top 20, we still feel disappointed. We were the strongest team, and Gesink the strongest rider, but we made a wrong decision....

Very good results in the last few pages, well done. Especially enjoyed LBL, quite exciting race
Great team result in Koln, not a win but you will hopefully learn from the mistake you did and next time win such race. Team still doing brilliantly

Thanks a lot, I'll do my best in making reports that the readers / followers can enjoy, so very happy that I (sometimes) succeed in it!

The Tour de Romandie is traditionally used as a final preparation for the Giro d'Italia. Nevertheless, the previous 66 editions had some very great winners, as Cadel Evans, Stephen Roche (record winner with 3 wins), Andreas Klöden, Roman Kreuziger and last year Robert Gesink , who was one single second faster than Edvald Boasson Hagen after the 6 stages.
The route
The route is the same as in 2010.
The race kicks of with a 4.3km flat prologue in the streets of Porrentruy.
Then a very hilly stage from Porrentruy to Fleurier, including 3 categorized climbs.
The 3rd stage with start and finish in Fribourg is the most flat one, and the only chance for the sprinters to win a stage.
Stage 4 is the Individual Time Trial around Moudun. It is pretty hilly, with 300 height metres to be climbed in the first half of the stage.
The 5th stage takes the riders after the start in Vevey to France. After two climbs in the second half of the stage, differences will occur in the GC when the riders finish in Chatel.
The last stage is in Switzerland again, with start and finish in Sion. It's the most difficult stage, with 3 first categorized climbs and the last summit 20 kilometres before the finish.

First stage, a flat 4.3km prologue in Porrentruy.
Early starter David Zabriskie (Garmin) sets the best time, 5'27.
Wilco Kelderman is 2 seconds slower than Zabriskie, and finds himself in 10th place when all the riders have finished. Best of our team!
New best time! Rabobanks Lars Boom rides 5'24.
But Boom can't enjoy being in the leaders seat too long, as his time his broken by Tony Martin: 5'20.
Bradley Wiggins rides a great prologue but is in the end 2 seconds slower than Martin.
What can Andy Schleck do? Well, he can be satisfied as he looses only 14 seconds to Martin.
The last rider to start is Alberto Contador. He can't break the time of Martin, 3rd at '2.

Pretty goo dprologue for us, with 3 riders losing only 8 seconds and 4 in the top 20. Also Andy did well, minimizing his loss.

The 2nd stage in the Tour de Romandie brings the riders from Porrentruy to Fleurier, over 175 difficult kilometres. The road goes up and down all the time.
And as you know, one of our goals is to win the KOTM-jersey. We managed to win it in the previous 5 World Tour stage races, and want to continue that streak. So Francis De Greef is the chosen one to do it this time. He attacks early in the ascend of the first categorized climb, the Saulcy, and is the first at the summit. He continues his breakaway towards the 2nd categorized climb, the Les Pontins and also is the first one there. But because the peloton is pretty close all the time, he drops the pace and takes place in the peloton again. Mission accomplished, so far.
After that, 3 riders attack out of the peloton: Francesco Failli (Farnese), Rinaldo Nocentini (AG2R) and Joost van Leijen (Vacansoleil). They create a maximum advantage of 2 minutes. In the ascend of the 3rd and last categorized climb of the day, the Mont de Buttes, Van Leijen gets dropped. Then in a small uphill part of the road, 24 kilometres before the finish in Fleurier, Simon Gerrans attacks (Qantas). At this moment, he is 1'02 behind the 2 leaders.
2 kilometres later, also Alberto Contador attacks. Gerrans has joined the 2 leaders and Contador is '27 behind. Some other riders try to jump with Contador (Van den Broeck, Spilak, Nibali), but they fail in succeding. We have decided to set a high pace and try to catch the 4 leaders, as our sprinter Pim Ligthart is still in the first group of 36 riders and he has some energy left.
Gerrans and Contador drop Failli and Nocentini in the next 15 kilometres, and with only 6 kilometres remaining (most of them downhill) they are '44 in front of the peloton.
Despite our efforts, we don't catch the 2 and it turns out in a sprint-a-deux. Gerrans easily wins it and takes his first win of the season.
The sprint for the 3 place is pretty exciting. Schleck was the first man in our train, De Gendt the 2nd and Ligthart the last one. Together with Anthony Geslin (FDJ), they cross the finish line. The jury decides to award the 3rd place to De Gendt , although we believe that Schleck (on the inside) was the first one. Anyway, the jury also gave this group the same time as the 2 leaders.

Too bad we couldn't catch Gerrans and Contador, but again we are very happy with the team perfromance! But I've got the feeling that at least Contador will attack in every single stage....

The 3rd stage in the Tour de Romandie is the most flat one. Nevertheless about 2500 height metres are waiting for the riders in the 170 kilometres with start and finish in Fribourg.
We see an early breakaway of 15 riders. Most famous names are Heinrich Haussler (Rabobank), Lloyd Mondory (AG2R) and Mirco Lorenzetto (Androni). But the group is too big and the peloton catches them again.
But some of the members of this breakaway try again, and this time with succes. A total group of 10 riders forms the BOTD: Giampaolo Cheula (Nespresso), Pierpaolo De Negri (Farnese Vini), Martin Elmiger (BMC), Maxim Gourov (Astana), Heinrich Haussler (Rabobank), Jan Kuyckx (Lotto), Joost van Leijen (Vacansoleil), Mirco Lorenzetto (Androni), Nikolas Maes (Omega Pharma) and Lloyd Mondory (AG2R).
Van Leijen is the first at the summit of the first ascend of the La Lorette, followed by Gourov and Cheula. 70 kilometres before the finish, their lead to the peloton is 6'23.
Then the GC-leader himself is talking in the front of the peloton: "come on guys, we'll never catch them! If you wanna win today, come help us!" Because with 48 kilometres remaining, the peloton is still 5'58 behind. So isn't it already too late?
The leading group has started the 2nd ascend of La Lorette and this time Gourov takes the most points, followed by Van Leijen and Lorenzetto. They have to defend a lead of 4'56 in the next 35 kilometres.
In the next hilly part, before the final descend to Fribourg, the cooperation in the peloton halters, so the 10 can maintain a nice lead. 10km to go and they are 3'18 in front of the peloton. Best placed rider in the GC is Joost van Leijen at 2'53, so he is still riding in virtual yellow!
8 kilometres before the finish, Thomas De Gendt uses a small uphill part before the final descend to attack. Maybe he can surprise the Saxo Bank team and sneak away with some seconds?
There are no attacks out of the leading group, so the 10 man sprint for the win. Elmiger starts the sprint from way too far, and gets easily overtaken by the others. Heinrich Haussler takes his first win for his new team,, making up for a disastrous classics-season (16th in Milano - San Remo, 21st in Ronde van Vlaanderen). Mondory gets 2nd, Lorenzetto 3rd. Now Van Leijen is getting nervous and is looking at the clock...
De Gendt is catched in the last 2 kilometres, so his energy has been wasted. Leonardo Duque wins the sprint at 2'31, so Contador stays in yellow. Best of our team is Pim Ligthart in 17th position.

Today's winner
Word from the DS
Not much to say about the stage. No time loss, no wasted energy (only De Gendt a little bit), still the KOTM-jersey.
