Spoiler Just throwing around names for the rumoured teams. Just rumours
"So many pathways, but only one endgame."
It's the end of the season and the start of a new one. Many teams have intriguing off-seasons in progress and warming up, and today's rumour spotlight at thecyclingreport.com is on Xero Racing p/b Octagon. Their PR team and managers have given us some brief soundbites for confirmed news whilst more unsubstantiated rumours have been flying around too. Let's see what's happening.
Confirmed:
'There is only one goal for us this forthcoming season and that is to promote to PCT and give ourselves every opportunity to stay there.' - Wynton Burns, General Manager
Fairly straightforward, Burns has had no qualms in saying this since it became apparent there would be no one-season promotion for the boys in blue. This quote has given ways to rumours, some more reliable than others. We'll get into that soon.
'We are aware that Jesse Sergent is on the market... we would love to see him as part of the team but there are many mitigating factors involved..' - Jackson Hughes, Sporting Manager
This has just come through in the last couple of days with the unfortunate disbanding of Kenya Airways. Teams such as Jayco - Cobra9, Garmin, Generali and Aegon have already been rumoured to be monitoring the top time triallist but Xero appear to be keen to have Sergent as their leader for 2017 in a way similar to how fellow Kiwi new boys Spark had the seemingly Tinkoff-bound Yatsevich last year.
'Cycling NZ are pleased to announce a closer partnership with Pacific Cycling in an attempt to bring their best riders into the professional ranks.'
Not necessarily Xero news especially as they are still CT and apparently promotion-driven but in the years to come and potentially in the next window Xero could pick up some of the influx of new Pacific talents reportedly looking to go pro on the world stage.
'There are so many young talents coming through this year and in the next couple from New Zealand and South Africa... we'd love to have many of them on our team now but on a CT budget it isn't plausible. The more advanced types such as Schreurs may be pursued.' - Jackson Hughes, Sporting Director.
The idea of loan-outs may not have struck Xero yet but also may backfire upon them and is an option they could have considered. The prospect of a highly-regarded Kiwi talent from this year, a Schreurs, Ambrose or Kennett, will have many of their fans very excited.
'Though next year's presentation will give you the full details, due to many circumstances and a shift in our structure Lionheart Racing will be the brand behind the team but not the name we will race under. We are not sure if it will change to Lionheart but for now we are very pleased with the situation and understanding we have with Xero and Octagon.' - Wynton Burns, General Manager
Not of interest to many of you but some nice clarification after a bit of confusion when the name was confirmed last week.
Rumours:
Simon Clarke will leave the team.
This one seems to be pure speculation with no purported ITK sources claiming it to be true. However, if Tom Scully is getting a second chance this would make logical sense. despite their friendship of the bike they seem to not work together so well off it, with each of their best few results coming in the absence of the other. Conversely,
Tom Scully will leave the team. - @veloinsider
Xero's big home rider flopped hard last year and patience may already be up with the Kiwi - or vice-versa. Hard to see them selling their biggest local star but the right offer could make this a reality.
The likes of Kim Ok Cheol, Nils Schomber, Jordan Schleck and any new talents could be loaned to another CT team to make salary cap space.
Following on from their seemingly high-stakes strategy to secure promotion, this would be hard to do for the team but if done right could be a good tactic. Will be itneresting to see if it actually happens.
Xero want to focus again on the mountains and hills, with a new leader for one with Scully and/or Clarke picking up sprint points.
Could be considered the simple option but would make sense if they want a straightforward transfer season and route to promotion. Where's the fun in that though? Would work against the possible Sergent signing that has been hotly tipped. |

Team Rider of the Year Awards
It's almost time now to announce the winners our four rider of the year categories. But first, a little statistic inspired by Mresuperstar on our rider's points per wage and per race day.
Nat. | Name | Wage | Points | RD | PpRD | WpP | | Jonathan Salinas | €80,000 | 263 | 49 | 5.37 | €304 | | Tom Diggle | €130,000 | 218 | 53 | 4.11 | €596 | | Jamalidin Novardianto | €50,000 | 138 | 76 | 1.82 | €362 | | Simon Clarke | €50,000 | 134 | 53 | 2.53 | €373 | | Ole Hirschlein | €140,000 | 66 | 53 | 1.25 | €2121 | | Geremie Nzeke | €145,000 | 63 | 54 | 1.16 | €2301 | | Tom Davison | €75,000 | 57 | 64 | 0.89 | €1315 | | Tom Scully | €210,000 | 52 | 47 | 1.11 | €4038 | | Matthew Lloyd | €55,000 | 36 | 60 | 0.6 | €1527 | | Timothy Gudsell | €50,000 | 21 | 63 | 0.33 | €2380 | | Marvain Tognama Kossouhorou | €50,000 | 5 | 64 | 0.08 | €10,000 | | Aleksandr Efimkin | €50,000 | 4 | 60 | 0.06 | €12,500 | | Jean Helwani | €0 | 1 | 57 | 0.02 | - | | Jordan Schleck | €70,000 | 0 | 74 | - | - | | Nils Schomber | €10,000 | 0 | 12 | - | - | | Ok Cheol Kim | €10,000 | 0 | 10 | - | - |
Certainly some interesting reading to be done at the HQ here, but also a lot of mitigating factors makes this table not too important. First up in our riders of the year, is our Wheelworks Young Rider of the Year. The nominees were Jordan Schleck, Jamalidin Novardianto, Nils Schomber and Ok Cheol Kim. As you've certainly guessed, the winner is:
Young Rider of the Year
Certainly a worthy winner there. We move on now to the Fan's Rider of the Year, as voted by you, the readers of this HQ. He pulled away early, was last for a while, behind until the last day, but with 44% of the vote, in the end, your Octagon Fan's Rider of the Year is:
Fan's Rider of the Year
Spoiler
Jamaldin Novardianto (44%)
2nd: Tom Diggle (33%)
3rd: Jonathan Salinas (23%)
A very tight competition until the very end there. Just three more awards to go. Next up is a formality and one you already know, but our top points scorer of the year is:
Points Scorer of the Year
Next up is our My Food Bag Breakaway Rider of the Year. This was decided by number of breakaways, KoM and sprint points, sucess of breakaways and initiation/late attacks. However no matter which topic you focused on there was only one victor here.
Breakaway Rider of the Year
Congratulations to all our victors so far. However some appreciation and plaudits that are most important is the respect of your peers. And in the tightest contest yet, by a single vote, your 2017 Rider's Rider of the Year is, in a somewhat surprising win:
Rider's Rider of the Year
Spoiler
Tom Diggle
2nd: Jamalidin Novardianto
3rd: Simon Clarke

Good to see Novardianto coming up with the goods for you! Indonesian riders on foreign teams tend to do well, I vaguely remember Superman doing well a couple of seasons back for another team too
