Well but you can't just look at things that bluntly. A 186km stage with only 2 categorized climbs (cat.1 + cat. 2), plus a few minor climbs isn't nearly enough for a stage to be considered the hardest of a GT (especially the Giro).

Also if you're looking for differences between the favourites, you're probably going to have to wait a few more days, when fatigue kicks in and becomes a differentiating factor. Also the TT should spice things up.

Well but you can't just look at things that bluntly. A 186km stage with only 2 categorized climbs (cat.1 + cat. 2), plus a few minor climbs isn't nearly enough for a stage to be considered the hardest of a GT (especially the Giro).

If you didnt notice i put quotation marks around hardest which suggest in a vacuum, Campitello Matese is the hardest finishing climb of this year's race going by the numbers. I am well aware that the stages in the 3. week are much harder when considering the difficulties before the last climb

I'm not implying you're the one who came up with that, but you're the one who's quoting. Given that you didn't care to post your source I'm directing this at you. Which numbers make this one harder than stage 19 or 20?

Matese - 13 km, 6,9%, stage 8
Di Campiglio, 15,5 km, 5,7%, stage 15
Aprica, 13,9 km, 3,4%, stage 16
Carvinia, 19,2 km, 5%, stage 19
Sestriere, 9,2 km, 5,4%, stage 20

Again: Im not implying that this is the hardest STAGE, just the simple fact that Campitello Matese is the hardest finishing climb of this year's race

The site plataformarecorridosciclistas.org offers detailed analysis of race routes, particularly for the Grand Tours (albeit in Spanish so I'm not quite sure what they're saying Pfft) Anyway, they rank the climbs in the GTs according to their coefficient (not quite sure how it's derived but it looks a very reasonable and fairly trustworthy measure). Campitello Matese ranked the hardest of the MTFs here.

Look, you're only looking at the average gradient. There are a handful more major factors that influence the difficulty of a climb.

But since you're so grown up and intelligent to go back and edit a previous post just to win a discussion you should probably know that too, right?

'Il Garibaldi' continues with Tinkoff – Saxo's Alberto Contador still in the Maglia Rosa, despite the best efforts of Team Sky and Astana. Stage 9 from Benevento to San Giorgio del Sannio, 215 kilometres long, is the third longest stage of this year's race and none the easier for it.

Featuring three major categorised climbs and several other unclassified climbs, the accumulated elevation gain of the today's climbs reaches a dizzying total of 4,000 metres. So while the ninth stage of the 2015 Giro d'Italia may lack a summit it will be just as punishing as yesterday's eighth stage to Campitello Matese.

Just 77.5km in to the stage the peloton will begin the ascent to the summit of the Category 2 rated Monte Termino. Officially 20 kilometres in length, the climb of Monte Termino has an average gradient of 4.2%. The slope will reach a maximum of 9% during a short sector located roughly 12.7km in to the ascent.

After cresting the Monte Termino the peloton will then begin descending down the other side to reach the beginning of the Category 1 rated climb of Colle Molella. Interestingly, the first intermediate sprint of the day is located 4.2 kilometres in to the ascent up to the Colle Molella.

Coming 117.2km in to the stage, the Category 1 rated climb of Colle Molella is a whole 10.5km shorter than the Monte Termino but earns its superior classification due to a higher average and maximum gradient. Officially 9.5 kilometres long, the Colle Molella features an average gradient of 6.3% and a maximum gradient of 12%, between kilometre 5.5 through to nine of the climb the gradient rarely drops below nine percent.

Following the 1087m high summit of the Colle Molella the peloton will descend slightly to Lago Laceno before beginning the ascent up to the uncategorised, 1243m high, summit of the Serro Tondo. After cresting the Serro Tondo the peloton begin the long descent to Lioni for the second intermediate sprint.

An undulating route precedes the foot of the Category 2 rated Passo Serra, with the ascent to Castelvetere sul Calore probably the most challenging of the climbs. Unofficially clocking in at 8.2km in length, the road rises up 303 metres to the 764m high summit at an average gradient of 3.7%.

While the profile provided by race organisers RCS for the Category 2 Passo Serra reads six kilometres in length the official length of the climb is a rather short 3.6km. Featuring an average gradient of 8%, the middle section of the climb is the toughest with a minimum slope of 8.8% and a maximum slope of 13%. About 1000 metres from the crest of the climb the difficulty will lessen slightly to a minimum of 6% in grade.

A brisk descent, which ends about five kilometres from the line, brings the peloton to the foot of our final ascent for the day, a climb up to the town of San Giorgio del Sannio and the stage finish. Unofficially measuring about 2200 metres in length, the ascent features an average gradient of 4.9%, with the initial 1000 metres or so the hardest at above 5% in gradient.

The remaining 2800 metres leading up to the finishing line will be flat for the most part while also throwing in some bends and three 90-degree corners for the peloton to navigate through. Finishing on a seven metre wide, 600 metre long straight, the road rises all the way to the line at around 3% in gradient.

Stage Contenders

Arguably tougher than the fourth stage from Chiavari to La Spezia, just what will be in store for viewers on Stage 9 from Benevento to San Giorgio del Sannio? Considering the absolute carnage that followed Astana increasing the tempo on Stage 4, the ninth stage of the 2015 Giro d'Italia has the potential to blow the peloton to bit if ridden aggressively.

Unless the breakaway contains a major threat to the chances of Alberto Contador taking home the overall race victory Tinkoff Saxo will be content to have set a modest tempo in the peloton and let the breakaway fight it out for the stage honours. Whether or not the other general classification teams have the same tactical plan will have to be seen, with Astana particularly keen so far to race the medium mountain stages fiercely.

Despite all the work done by Astana they still have little to show for it in the general classification apart from damaging Rigoberto Uran's ambitions. Even after giving Mikel Landa the all clear to pursue the stage victory yesterday the Kazakhstan outfit were still ultimately outfoxed by Movistar, Astana will need to keep piling the pressure on if they hope to claim a stage and crack Fabio Aru's rivals.

While Team Movistar will be able to relax slightly having finally snatched a stage victory at the 2015 Giro d'Italia yesterday through Benat Intxausti there are plenty of other teams still looking to open their tally. So, again, I suspect the usual candidates from the Pro-Continental and World Tour teams will attempt to get involved, with the finale suiting someone in the mould of Philippe Gilbert.

Astana and Sky should try to make it hard for Contador. Because this is almost like last chance for them.
Tomorrow being rest day, and day after flat stage. Contador should be okay after than. Maximum pain will be in 2-3 days from shoulder dislocation.

On other note, Tinkov will be upset that Roman Kreuziger was not with Contador in finale. Even Nieve and Konig made it back to Porte. Kreuziger just went to sleep. And he was supposed to be plan B.

Yes, today is ideal to put pressure on Contador. His team seems to be weaker than Astana and SKY, which wouldn't matter so much if Kreuziger was top domestique but apparently he isn't. Whereas SKY and Astana have full strength in numbers and can shape the race much to their liking. Add to that Contador's injury... Frown

We all know, both Aru and Porte need time ahead of the ITT. Aru will lose enough as it is in ITT and Porte isn't (that much) better than Contador in TTs, his last really good TT is from Tour 2013 (4th).
