Would you look at that. Contador and Rasmussen in front of the GC. I wonder where we've seen that before

I really wonder if Rasmussen filled in his whereabouts correctly!

Stage 9 [IMG-r]https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/profil9.gif[/IMG-r]
Val-d'Isère - Briançon
159.5 km
Tuesday 17 July
Coming after two tough days in the Alps, the riders truly deserved yesterday's rest day. Today's stage started with a bang, as the peloton tackled the Tour's highest summit right from the start. After the Col de l'Iseran, the road was pretty much all downhill until the double ascent of the Telegraphe and the Galibier. From there, a 37 kilometre downhill ended with a punchy finish in Briançon. Who would risk it on the Galibier with such a long way to the finish?
The peloton, led by new race leader Alberto Contador's Discovery team, did nothing to prevent Cyril Dessel (Ag2r), Dario Cioni (Predictor - Lotto) and Kjell Carlström (Liquigas) establishing today's breakaway.
The brave attackers heading up the Col de l'Iseran. None of them represented any danger for the Maillot Jaune. Cioni was best placed in 86th, 25 minutes off the race lead.
The peloton did nothing full stop, as the lead of the three escapees rocketed up to almost 10 minutes. The only drama was last year's runner-up Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d'Epargne) crashing hard on the descent. He got back onto the tail of the peloton, but didn't look comfortable at all.
Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d'Epargne) hurt himself while descending the Col de l'Iseran.
On the long ascent leading to the top of the Col du Galibier, the three riders in the breakaway eventually became two. Kjell Carlström (Liquigas) was unable to keep the pace of his more experienced companions.
Dario Cioni (Predictor - Lotto) and Cyril Dessel (Ag2r) were much stronger than the Finnish Liquigas rider.
The peloton upped the pace a little on the slopes of the Galibier, but not enough to drop a lot of riders. However, they managed to drop Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d'Epargne), who was clearly injured after his fall. Last year's runner up was 22th overall before the stage.
The procession up the last mountain was remarkably uneventful. It seemed like all the teams were happy with their positions at this point in the race.
A rather large peloton was still together near the top of the Galibier.
Meanwhile, the two men out front kept it going. The long climb had taken its toll on Dario Cioni (Predictor - Lotto) and Cyril Dessel (Ag2r), but as they crested the summit, they had an advantage of three minutes.
Dario Cioni (Predictor - Lotto) mopping up the points at the top of the Galibier, followed by Cyril Dessel (Ag2r).
None of them collected enough points to wrestle Iban Mayo (Saunier Duval) out of the polkadot jersey though. Cioni and Dessel kept a big portion of their lead as they approached the finish in Briançon. On the final kick up to the line, Dario Cioni (Predictor - Lotto) showed that he had the most left in the tank!
The experienced Italian dropping his breakaway companion Cyril Dessel in the final kilometre!
Cadel Evans' strong helper won the stage after a long escape over the high mountains! His victory can maybe be explained by a very disinterested peloton, but a mountain stage win in the Tour de France is still a huge price to take home!
Cioni celebrates in Briançon.
T-Mobile's Michael Rogers led the peloton over the line a minute later, with all the favourites still together, including race leader Alberto Contador (Discovery). Well, maybe not all the favourites.
The injured Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d'Epargne) struggled home in 173rd, 20 minutes down on the peloton.
Last year's runner up has now lost all chances of repeating that surprise result. With Oscar Pereiro struggling, Alejandro Valverde's chances have also taken a blow. It's even uncertain whether Pereiro can start tomorrow's stage. Luckily for him though, it's back to the flatlands for a while.

Boring stage, expected more from the GC favorites, but with the Galibier coming almost 40 kms off the finish not really surprised. Great win for Cioni!

Horribly dull stage. The peloton refused to race it. I had lots of trouble avoiding stupid results. Cobo would always attack on the Galibier and take the yellow jersey by about five minutes. The final steep kilometer would also create enormous time gaps, because most GC riders always sat at the back of the peloton. I had to set the stage as a hilly stage to prevent those things from happening.
Now I want to look forward to the time trial and the Pyrenées, and hopefully I don't have to re-run any more stages.

Stage 10 [IMG-r]https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/profil10.gif[/IMG-r]
Tallard - Marseille
229.5 km
Wednesday 18 July
After the crossing the Alps in shifting weather conditions, stage 10 took the riders south from Tallard, through the Alpes de Haute Provence to the port city of Marseille on the Riviera. The sun was shining and opportunistic riders who were looking for a result would certainly be on the attack. The stage was perfectly suited for attackers, with the two 3rd category climbs in the final 30 kilometres guaranteed to be decisive in determining who got the winners big bowl of bouillabaisse in Marseille.
Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues Télécom) was the rider with the[IMG-r]https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/pineau.jpg[/IMG-r] most breakaway kilometres in his legs before the stage, and today's profile was bound to tempt the aggressive Frenchman. Pineau wore the polkadot jersey for a number of days in last year's Tour, a feat that he has repeated this Tour de France.
A big group of 11 riders went early in the stage, and in it was our fiery Frenchman Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues Télécom). The peloton gave them a nice advantage, but never too much.
Kurt Asle Arvesen (Team CSC) leading the breakaway ahead of Juan Miguel Mercado (Agritubel) and Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues Télécom). In the break were other strong riders like Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner) and Grégory Rast (Astana).
The strong escape group stuck to the guns though, and as they approached the two 3rd categories towards the end, the peloton was two minutes in arrears.
Tom Boonen's Quickstep - Innergetic team hadn't given up on a sprint finish in Marseille, but they would have work hard to reel in the breakaway.
On the steep final 3rd category climb, the breakaway was splintered when the stronger riders decided to lay down the gauntlet. Rik Verbrugghe (Cofidis) was the first one to drop.
Rik Verbrugghe (Cofidis) had to throw in the towel on the final hill.
Due to the relentless pace of Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner) and Kurt Asle Arvesen (Team CSC), only six of the eleven riders were still present as they crested the top of the climb and started descending towards Marseille. The peloton had too much ground to make up, so the stage win belonged to the breakaway!
The six remaining escapees heading down towards a battle for the stage win in Marseille: Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues Télécom), Grégory Rast (Astana), Kurt Asle Arvesen (Team CSC), Matthieu Ladagnous (Française des Jeux), Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner) and Iñaki Isasi (Euskaltel).
Would Pineau's effort finally be rewarded with a stage win? As the six entered the final straight, Astana's Grégory Rast found himself at the front. Not the place anyone would want to be at that point. Iñaki Isasi (Euskaltel) started his sprint first, and suddenly it was a free for all drag-race!
The desperate fight for the stage win! Schumacher and Arvesen were on the front, but Pineau was lurking just behind.
For what seemed like an eternity, the six escapees fought their way down the home straight! Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner) found that little bit extra to sprint away to victory! He crossed the line ahead of Arvesen and Pineau. The German classics rider had the most left after 230 grueling kilometres.
Schumacher's speed on the run-in couldn't really be compared to his Formula One namesake, but it was enough to beat his tired rivals.
A couple of minutes later, the peloton caught the dropped breakaway riders on the line. A battle for the remaining points ensued.
Tom Boonen's sprint got him the green jersey back.
'Tommeke' got in first among the big sprinters, and takes back the green jersey by a slim margin. For how long will he keep it this time?

Why would that be a bad thing? I think the time trials and Pyrenées are going to be really exciting!
And my mood and motivation, which took a beating after the dreadful stage to Briancon, is now up again after the cool stage to Marseille

Stunning pics (again), I specially liked the ones from the breakaway sprint for the victory (the long road, the city and a chasing peloton really helped as well)
Good to know your motivation is up again, because I'm really looking forward to the battle on the Pyrenees

Don't worry squire, sutty has a different meaning for the smilies than we have. That pretty sad looking one is a happy one too him .
