Well, at least for one stage we'll surely keep the jersey
April 15th: Vuelta a Castilla y León
Stage 2: Burgos - Carrion de los Condes, 188.9 kms
After yesterday's hills, a really easy stage for the sprinters today. Yes, it has some uphill sections, but has a lot more descents, including a big descent to the flat finish that should make sure that everyone are fresh for the final sprint.
Beggining of today's stage.
Tanel Kangert shows his new jersey. Today's stage has got no KOM checks, so he'll stay quietly in the peloton resting for tomorrow's crucial stage.
We still wanted to be part of the break, so Magno Prado Nazaret made sure we had someone representing us between the 5 riders that broke away this morning.
The break tried, but as usual, got caught with 6 km left.
If you look in the stage profile, there is a really small hill just in the end of the stage. How would I imagine this? Pagliarini and Walker struggled with the pace up that hill, so they won't be sprinting today. Actually, the whole team struggled, no exceptions. Just can explain by bad fitness.
So again we would only watch the final kilometers. A lot of movements before the sprint. With the sprint about to begin, William Bonnet and his lead out in front, with a lot of other sprinters in his wheel: Florencio, Pedersen, Ginnani and Freire. On the left, Vaitkus leading out Steegmans.
Apparently, Steegmans decided to change wheels on the last moment. He left Vaitkus to get Florencio's wheel. It was a smart decision, as Florencio waited nothing to make his move and was sprinting much faster than Vaitkus.
Pedersen, Ginnani and Freire also decided to go before Bonnet. Finally the Bbox rider made his move. Everyone was already facing the wind but Steegmans.
Inside the kilometer to go, Steegmans trying to make his move, but he has no space to pass the others!! Pedersen leading, Ginnani closing fast on the left!
And its Martin Pedersen winning by half a wheel! Great win for Footon - Servetto! What a sprint, the first 7 riders even created a gap to the others!
On the middle of the stage I actually realized that if Kangert enters tomorrow's crucial stage for KOM being 5th in GC and 2nd in young no way they will let him go clear. So we decided to slow down Kangert in the last kilometers to get rid of the peloton: he passed 148th with a residue of 2'56.

Okay, maybe you can think I've destroyed Kangert GC chances, so just to tell we need to know our limits: we knew Kangert would have no chances for a good GC with his current fitness. In fact he was only 5th because of bonus seconds. Also, wasn't for the gap system he would probably more than 3 minutes down. We can't be too ambitious =) As for the stage, really bad our riders struggled on that tiny hill.. hope for better luck in stage 5, but it's difficult to think of a good result in stage 5 that is much tougher than this one.

Hopefully =)

April 16th: Vuelta a Castilla y León
Stage 3: León - Alto del Morredero, 175.6 kms
Welcome to the toughest stage of the race!! 3 big mountains await the riders, the last one finishing the stage. We also have a small climb on the beggining, that will be giving 6 KOM points. The second climb and first real mountain, Alto de San Lorenzo, will be giving 16 KOM points. Puerto de la Cobertoria is next and will also be giving 16 points. The mountain top finish on Cotobello should see some serious attacks from a small selected group. The winner also gets 16 points on the mountain competition. Today's stage is crucial, hopefully we might have the KOM jersey secure after today.
By the time we reached the top of the first Alto de la Cabruana, the first climb(small one), no breakaway had really established yet. There was a front group with 4 riders, then a 8 chaser group, and then the peloton, with gaps not being bigger than a minute. Kangert managed to get himself in the front group and collected the 6 first points.
We didn't want the second group to reach the leaders, as there were better climbers than Kangert among the chasers. We weren't able to avoid that though and the 8 riders eventually caught the leaders. The group of 12 started riding towards Alto de San Lorenzo, the first big climb of the day.
When we reached the foot of Alto de San Lorenzo (10.3 kms 8.6%), the escapees were 6'20 in front of the peloton.
The best climbers set a high pace up the San Lorenzo climb, and in the top, only 6 riders were in the front group. Tanel Kangert was between them and was able to collect more 16 points, in the middle of cold, rain and even some snow. The group was 77 km away from the finish line and had a 9'15 gap to the pack.
Reaching the Puerto de la Cobertoria (9.1 kms 7.8%) and with 45 kilometers to go, the break still had a good advantage of 9'26 to the peloton. Too early to say anything, as the pack can gain a lot of ground on the climbings, but things were looking good for the escapees.
On Puerto de la Cobertoria some riders dropped from the 6 riders leading group. The first to be dropped was Kangert, who collected only 6 points. Ortega was alone in the front, Martinez right behind. Then Fofonov and Sousa chasing together, Azanza alone and Kangert alone.
Splits also occured in the peloton. A group of 28 riders reached the summit 7 minutes after the leaders. From the Top 10, only the first 4 riders were in the group(the others were in Top 10 because of bonus seconds, e.g. Pedersen). With less than 40 km to go and with that gap, maybe the break would do it today?
On the front group, Ortega was doing most of the work, and when the 2 reached the foot of the Cotobello climb (11.7 kms 6.2%) the peloton of 30 riders led by Bouygues Télécom was 5'25 behind the leaders. Would it be enough?
After 2 kilometers of climb, Ortega dropped Martinez and was going solo. The peloton caught the other escapees.
Scarponi was setting the pace up the Cotobello. With 6 km left, the group of 15 riders was 3 minutes behind leader Ortega. It was surely a great gap for the escapee, but he was starting to feel a bit tired.
Race leader Trofimov was glued on Scarponi's wheel. Scarponi was already favorite to get the jersey in the time trial with the current gap ( 45" ), if he could get any time today than almost surely that would happen.
Up the Cotobello, nobody attacked. When we reached the final kilometer, Ortega was 1'20 in front of the Scarponi led chasegroup. Would he be caught in the final meters?
No!! Manuel Ortega kept going good and won the stage in a brilliant effort! Setting a high pace since the beggining of the stage, in the breakaway, up all the climbs, and staying in front after such pressure surely shows what a strong ride he did today!
On the sprint, the group behind saw a lot of splits. Scarponi and Monier powered away to get a gap on Trofimov, who gets 4th place, losing 14 seconds to Scarponi.
Again, Armstrong with a poor performance, surely his fitness isn't good. He crossed the line 34th, 6'05 behind Ortega.

Well, Scarponi(TT 71) now is only 19 seconds behind Trofimov(TT 66), which means very probably we won't see Trofimov leading after tomorrow's time trial. Scarponi is the favorite for the role, but who knows what happen in the race of the truth? About us, I was actually hoping for Ortega to win.. just seeing the podiums I realized the mistake it was: with the win, Ortega goes to 40 mountain points, only 2 behind Kangert. Stage 4 has no KOM checks and stage 5 has one worth 10 points. The jersey will go for Kangert or Ortega, impossible for other to win now. We'll keep the closest possible eye on the Andalucía rider.
April 17th: Vuelta a Castilla y León
Stage 4: Ponferrada - Ponferrada, 20.1 kms
Today's time trial has some climbings, so is classified as a hilly stage. That might favor Trofimov, who has 19 seconds advantage over Scarponi. As tomorrow's stage is flat, today we might see the last changes on GC. Seara/Vivo has the 3 best time trialists, maybe we can expect a nice result today.
With his Argentinian champion, Matías Médici set the new best time - 34'10.
We also had hopes with Jorge Giacinti, and he got provisional second, 4 seconds behind Médici.
Paul Martens has already shown he has a pretty bad form, but it was enough to beat Médici's time by 5 seconds - 34'05.
Tanel Kangert spent two whole stages in breakaways, but he felt good enough to get a provisional 5th, 13 seconds behind Martens' time.
Lance Armstrong has already proven he has a bad fitness, and today he has just shown that again. He crossed the line 47 seconds slower than Martens.
Nicolas Vogondy with his French champion jersey did a good time trial and beat Martens time! - 34'02
He had no time to even be happy, though, as the rider after him, David Blanco, also set a new best time, 24 seconds in front of the French - 33'38
J.I. Gutiérrez did a great time and set the new best time, just one second in front of Blanco - 33'37
Marzio Bruseghin was a favorite to beat Gutiérrez's time, but he only got provisional 4th, 15 seconds after Gutiérrez.
Óscar Pereiro knew he would have to battle to keep his 5th in GC - but surprisingly he did an awesome time trial and beat Gutiérrez! New best time, 33'33!
After Pereiro's performance, Damien Monier would have to put some effort to maintain the 4th place, and he managed to do that - provisional 6th, 26 seconds behind Pereiro.
His team mate Rein Taaramae stole his provisional 6th - 33'52 (+19)
Michele Scarponi was racing with only one thing in his mind: the overall lead! He got provisional 5th, trailing Pereiro by 9 seconds! Would it be enough for GC?
Yuri Trofimov did the time trial of his life!! Scarponi couldn't even beat Trofimov, as he got 33'33, same time as Pereiro and 2nd place!! Almost a win for Trofimov, what a terrific performance by the russian!!

Oh wow. Who could imagine this performance by Trofimov? Not only he defends his jersey, but he gains time on everybody except Pereiro. Oh yeah, and Pereiro also has bad time trial abilities and did great. For us, Médici got a nice 13th. Had his form been a bit better and maybe we could have gotten a Top 10.
You still have the KOM jersey wich is great...watch Ortega all time(not Kangert,he only needs to ride next to him) because i´m almost sure Ortega will attack for the KOM.

David Moncoutie often intentionally loses time in "easier" stages so he is not in GC contention, and allowed to attack and collect KOM points. He's won the past three mountain classifications at the Vuelta using this tactic.

April 18th: Vuelta a Castilla y León
Stage 5: Samos - Santiago de Compostela, 168.7 kms
The last stage of the race! A flat stage, sprint stage. A stage for the sprinters. Before the flat finish though, the sprinters will have to face Alto de Hondón de los Frailes. They will have 60 kilometers to recover before the end so I guess that won't be the biggest problem. It has been a great race so far, with Tanel Kangert still wearing the mountain jersey for us. Today's KOM check gives 10 points to the winner, and if not Kangert, only Manuel Ortega has a chance to win the mountain competition. We'll keep an eye close on him. And if our sprinters do not struggle too much, maybe we can expect more good things to finish the race?
We kept an eye close on the attempts to break from the peloton in the beginning of the stage. We had intentions to leave Kangert in the peloton, unless Ortega decided to attack and go for KOM.
A break was finally established containing eleven riders. Ortega wasn't between them, so Kangert was in the peloton and near to winning the KOM competition. We still wanted to have someone in the break so Matías Médici was representing us.
When they crossed the KOM check(60 km left), gap to the pack was 4'57. In the peloton, smiles in the face of a young Estonian(not Taaramae): Tanel Kangert had officially got the first win for the team in the season!
The last escapee was reeled in with 7 kilometers for the line.
Again, Pagliarini and Walker struggled on the last tiny hills and wouldn't be able to sprint.
William Bonnet was again the best positioned. On his wheel were Florencio and Freire. On the right side, Impey tried to set Steegmans on a good position.
The sprint begins! Pedersen instantly flies coming from the middle of the peloton! He of course won't be able to go so strong until the end, as he was already facing the wind.
Freire had room to make his move this time, and when that happened, nobody could counter the speed of Óscar Freire! He wins today's stage, and he makes it look so easy!
Again there was a gap between the 6 first riders and the other! On the clock gap was 21" from Freire to the peloton, but it wasn't enough for the gap to be counted on the results (need 20" between 6th and 7th). It was still an amazing sprint by the first riders. Trofimov passed 34th securing his overall lead.

Yes!! Tanel Kangert gets the team our first win of the season! 2 points ahead of Manuel Ortega in the mountain competition, he wins the King of Mountains competition! Congrats to you, Kangert(congrats, not kudos - kudos is only when he achieve something bigger ). Kangert performed great, but our sprinters, on the other hand... I know their fitness is bad, but look at the hills they struggled. We couldn't even try to sprint for the Top 10 goal. Pity. At least they've got the excuse that almost everyone in the team also struggled.
Yuri Trofimov wins this one in a really deserved way. He's proven the great fitness he's got now, winning the first stage alone, and defending from Scarponi in both mountain and time trial stages. Actually, he got time on Scarponi on the ITT. Great performance by him, who also got the points jersey.
The other part of the squad is already in France, as they are taking part in Tro-Bro Léon, a flat classic that also happens today, where we have some hopes in Nilceu dos Santos and Daniel Rogelin. Stay tuned!
@all
Thanks! It was great to get the first win of the season, hoping more to come =D
April 18th
Tro-Bro Léon
Tro-Bro Léon, or Tour of Léon, in English, or Tour du Pays Léonard, in French, or Tour of Pays de Léon, an alternative in English(call it whatever you want) is a small classic in France. It was created in 1984 and has had 26 editions up to now. So it ain't difficult to guess it's dominated by French riders. 22 winners were French. We've had 2 Australian winners, 1 Belgium and 1 Estonian. It was actually an amauter race until 2000, when it became a pro race.
It's surely a race that make the peloton hurt - 24 sections of dirt, cobblestones and gravel roads wait for the riders. That's why it's called Le Petit Paris - Roubaix (the little Paris - Roubaix). I am not so sure whether it's the same in the game, as the profiles shows no cobble sections. If it indeed has no cobble, it should be a great race for a mass sprint.

Favorites
Well, as we have no cobblestones in the profiles, I actually believe the sprinters are the favorites. The game also thinks like this. Although I think I've seen some sprinters better than him, the game shows Anthony Geslin as the main favorite. We'll have to see if his ride will fulfill the expectations. I just said I've seen better sprinters than him, right? So, Cofidis' Samuel Dumoulin is one of them. Saxo Bank has their hopes in this sprinter that was one of the best a few years ago: Baden Cooke. Maybe he'll find something in his legs to make us remember 2003?
Rabobank's main team is not taking part, but their CT team is, and brings a favorite: Coen Vermeltfoort is where the Holland team put their faith. Lloyd Mondory (AG2R), Marcel Sieberg (HTC - Columbia), Fabio Sabatini (Liquigas)... it's a pretty long list. I believe we'll have an exciting finish if the peloton maintains everything under control.
Rio es Carnival/Seara/Vivo
Team Goals:
- Top 15 (dos Santos);
- Take part in the breakaway.
Nilceu dos Santos is actually in his second week of training fitness level 6. This is the only time he peaks this season. Unfornately, thanks to my lame planning, he has 79 training fitness but only 12 racing fitness, so total = 91. It could be better, shame on my planning. This will be fixed next season, that is, if we get to there I hope we will.
Anyway, even with his good fitness wouldn't make him the team leader in other races. That's why he has to grab this chance with both hands - this is his moment. Let's hope the best for him. As for the others, they are either riding for breakaways or for getting form - such as Vítor, who returns after getting injured on Stage 5 of Tour of Qatar. Uffs, talked too much again, sorry. Let's just get to this race!
April 18th: Tro-Bro Léon
Lannilis - Lannilis, 195.2 kms
Although we have some very tiny hills, I believe my sprinters to survive. I mean, if they can't not struggle and sprint here, then they probably won't sprint anywhere. The good thing is that what happened with Pagliarini and Walker in Spain was probably consequence of a bad form. Dos Santos has form 91 today.
After we got in the race, we saw: yes, there were dirt, gravel roads, but not cobblestones ones. I don't think this requires more effort to ride like cobblestones. At least I didn't see it requiring. Here the peloton is entering one of the sections.
A break of 10 riders was formed earlier today to try to steal the attention on the finish. Rogelin was between them.
The break was reeled in shortly after completing the final circuit for the first time. All the "big" hills had already passed in this point and dos Santos was hanging on well.
That's where the magic comes in. Guess what? Nilceu dos Santos couldn't stand a 46 km/h pace without having his heart rate higher than 175. After a few kilometers with such a pace, we saw he wouldn't be able to sprint. At least Rogelin just got reeled in from the break and had more energy, but was also hurting. We tried to send someone to protect Rogelin, but with 10 km to go he also hit the wall. For one more time, we would just watch the action.
Nobody organized trains or anything like that before the sprint. When it begun, Geslin caught Mondory's wheel while Vermeltfoort caught Geslin's wheel.
They outsprinted the others with Geslin taking the win. Mondory got 2nd, and Vermeltfoort, 3rd.
As for dos Santos? He couldn't finish with the peloton. In fact, 3 Seara/Vivo riders finished in front him(not counting the one you see with him in the screenshot). Just to remember, they all had a much worse form than him. Rogelin was the only one from the team to finish with the peloton. And he was being dropped, so he finished last on the pack. In the end got the same time as the winner, though.
Today winner is

Now this is starting to actually piss me off a bit. It's happening very often now, of only 1 or 2 riders of our team finishing with the peloton. Before there was still the excuse that everybody was lacking form, but now they aren’t, so I'm really mad at the team.
In the end, all the 82 first riders got the same time. And Geslin, who was considered bigger favorite by the game won. I didn't believe in him, but he did it.
Our next race will be Giro del Trentino, going to Italy again. As we will be counting on all the big guns, I was actually thinking on going for a good GC, but I just received a message that Basso and Vande Velde will be there, so not sure what will be our goals. It should be a nice race still with 2 MTF. Stay tuned!
Welcome to Giro del Trentino, a 4-day stage race in Italy. It's usually a race with a lot of climbs, and because of that, the race is seen as a good preparation for Giro d'Italia. Indeed, several Giro del Trentino winners also added the Giro di Italia in their palmares in the same year: Francesco Moser, Gilberto Simoni, Paolo Savoldelli and Damiano Cunego. The last time we saw this happening was in 2004, with Cunego.
The race was created in 1962 but has had only 33 editions so far, as the race didn't occur during 64-79. Record for most wins is held by Cunego (3 wins). In the last 12 editions, only 1 non-Italian was able to be crowned overall winner: Julio Alberto Pérez, in 2005. Actually, in these last 12 editions, for 5 times the same team won the race 2 times in a row. For the last 2 years, Liquigas won the race: Nibali in 2008 and Basso in 2009.
We have a really tough route this year, as usual. The race kicks off with a kinda prologue, just a bit longer: an 12 km ITT. After the time trial specialists had the spotlights, it's time for the climbers: stage 2 offers 5 great climbs, including the mountain top finish on San Martino di Castrozza.
Stage 3 is classified as flat, so a stage for the sprinters - correction, for the sprinters that survive the constant climbings, like the 17 km long one that starts the stage. If that seemed enough, the riders still have more climbings to come: another mountain top finish on stage 4, this time it's Alpe di Pampeago (7.8 kms, 9.6% avg, 16% max), featured on 1999 Giro, where Pantani gained more than 2'30 on runner up Savoldelli to consolidate his Giro win.
The GC Contenders
Defending champion Ivan Basso is taking part here and is by far the main favorite. What he mainly wants is probably to repeat Cunego's achievement in 2004: win Giro del Trentino and Giro di Italia. And we know he has great chances of doing that. Garmin will rely on Christian Vandevelde. He might get some seconds on Basso on the short ITT but probably will be no match for Ivan the Terrible in the mountain terrain. Vacansoleil brings Riccardo Riccò, who should be a strong contender. We'll have to know if he'll find his 2008 strength after coming back from his ban. Domenico Pozzovivo has shown great form in Italy earlier this season, when he dominated Settimana Coppi e Bartali. If he can perform so well as he did there, he might be a good choice for the bets. The list goes on with with the always present Przemyslaw Niemiec (Miche), Francesco Masciarelli (Acqua & Sapone) and others.
The Sprinters
As expected, we don’t have many good sprinters as the race has only one sprint stage. On the small list, we see Anthony Ravard, Andrea Grendene, Mikhaylo Khalilov, Alexandre Usov and a few others. Hopefully we might be able to get a nice result on Stage 3. That is, if Pagliarini and Walker don’t struggle on the last kilometers as they have been doing on the last races.

Team Goals:
- Top 20 GC (Kangert)
As our riders continue to build their form for the late month goals, we have a strong squad here. No expectations come from the two sprinters as there's only one sprint stage and it's too tough for them. Tanel Kangert on the other hand showed great performances to earn the KOM jersey on Vuelta Castilla y León, so we believe he'll be able to get some good results here. He'll go for a good GC, and will have help of Nazaret and Vítor in the mountains. Vítor fitness is still bad as he just got back from an injury, so Kangert won't have the best help possible, but let's count on him.
I never really rode the Giro del Trentino in PCM as I prefer other preparation races for the Giro. But looking on the profiles this could be much fun ;D
Good luck.
