MSR is a crap shoot. I think I've won it once in all versions of PCM
But good luck in Australia. Should do well in the road race with a full team. |

Thanks. Hope so, too.
The Australian championships bring all Australian riders into their home country. All riders would like to ride in the National jersey over the whole season. So we can expect two stunning stages.
We start with the ITT and a few days later the road race takes part.

1 | Cameron Meyer | Garmin - Cervelo | 2 | Jack Bobridge | Garmin - Cervelo | 3 | Adam Hansen | Team HTC - Highroad | 4 | Richard Porte | Leopard Trek | 5 | Brett Lancaster | Team Saxobank - Sungard |
That early in the season we were able to celebrate the first time. Both young talents did an excellent job and hopefully they can repeat it this year.
Garmin squad in 2012
These two will of course lead our team here. Haussler, Goss and Lowe will just train a bit today.

Australian Championship ITT
Ballarat - Ballarat
The stage is mostly flat. With a handful of quite equal time trial specialists it`s hard to bet on a single rider.
Unfortunately Meyer was very early on the road and couldn`t use the advices of his team mates. But therefore he sets a new best time that will last for quite long now.
55'59
Surprisingly Rory Sutherland was quite a lot faster on all checkpoints and so he takes the lead in the finish. Meyer`s dream of defending his title is already over, but now we all hope for Bobridge of course.
55'25
Former ITT World Cup winner Richie Porte with a good time. He beats Meyer clearly but still 9s behind Sutherland.
55'34
Now it`s Bobridge time. On the checkpoints he is faster than his teammate but still just 3rd. Also in the finish he is just 3rd. So Garmin won`t have the Australian ITT Champion in 2012. What a pity.
55'54
Michael Rogers was the big favourite in the media. But also the Rabobank rider can`t beat Sutherland`s time. Just the 2nd for him.
55'33
So this season starts with a small surprise in Down Under. 29 year old Rory Sutherland from the "UnitedHealthcare presented by Maxxis" team wins ahead of Rogers and Porte and our two Garmin riders.
It`s the first win for him after being 2nd from 2005-2007.
Hope we will have more luck in the road race.

Problem is that all my riders have a maximum of 51pts in fitness
You can`t do anything good with this form. Even on hard.
Plus Bobridge -1 and Meyer -3 with bad daily form.
Therefore it`s still a good result.
Hopefully I will have around 65 in the Tour Down Under. |

As usually break wins the road race, if you send Goss or Haussler, they have a chance to win it, good luck. Sutherland fitness mus be preety high.

not always. if you leave it to the computer then the break usually stays away. but i won it with Gerrans for Sky by controlling the gap to the break, chasing it down and then attacking on the last climb. got an even stronger Aussie team for next year so i hope to do the same thing.
Great Story by the way. |

Thanks.
The road race leads on 17 laps around the hilly terrain of Buninyong.
That early in the season the form is still quite random and unfortunately we had quite a bad luck with our riders but nevertheless we will try to defend the title.

After the ITT win Meyer also won the road race and celebrated a very successful start into the season.
Garmin squad in 2012
With Haussler and Goss we have more possibilities this year. Lowe, Bobridge and Meyer can attack and the sprinters wait in the peloton for a possible sprint finish.

Australian Championship RR
Buninyong - Buninyong
It`s a quite hard course as most riders won`t have a very good form. We will try to join the break of the day. Otherwise we will control the field to guarantee a sprint finish.
At first Meyer attacked with some others. Being caught Bobridge with another attack. The pace was very fast and so also our 2nd choice had no chance. We wanted to wait now as long as the pace reduces a bit again.
But we didn`t expect that these 3 guys are allowed to ride away.
Sutton (Sky), S.Davis (Drapac), W.Sulzberger (FDJ) will be the group of the day.
But as we have 7 Aussies this season we are able to control the field. Especially Rowe and Wilson have to work today as probably in most races they will ride this year.
3 more laps and the field is quite close now. Always around 1 min. Also Bobridge and Meyer are doing pace now.
While the old break is still ahead M.Lloyd (Sky), Porte (Leopard) and ITT winner Sutherland (UnitedHealthcare) with an attack on the 2nd last lap. But our Garmin riders doing a good job and will bring them back soon.
Final lap, 8km and still 1min for Sulzberger and Sutton, who were able to increase again. Obviously they saved some energy. So we changed our tactics. Goss will wait in the peloton for a sprint and Haussler attacks on the last climb. His fitness is definitely quite low, but his daily form is quite good.
He was able to reach the first group, but unfortunately some other riders had the same idea.
Cadel Evans (Leopard), Gerrans (Farnese) and Rogers (Rabobank). Bad for us that the 3 big favourites for an attack finish are here, good for us that no other sprinter but Sutton is here, who should be exhausted by now.
But also Haussler is on his limit now. (54 fitness)
It was a very close finish without happy end for us.
Haussler had the worst position behind an exhausted Sulzberger and in front of the others. So he was very early in the wind and the weaker sprinters were able to increase out of his back.
Cadel Evans is the 2012 Australian Road Race Champion. He won ahead of Gerrans and Sutton!!!, who seems to be in a good shape. Maybe a big contender for the TDU?
Haussler as 5th in his first road race for Garmin isn`t bad. Goss on 9 finished 3rd of the peloton.
Hope both will get some better form until the TDU.

Bad you couldn't win, but anyway, two riders in Top 10 is great! And a shape has Sutton at the moment.
Good luck for TDU, 7 Aussies on the team should be nice to see =)

@ lluuiiggii: Thanks. As my Australian all train as much as possible in January they might have a "good" form.
@ baia: Was a pity that Haussler couldn`t win the sprint, but it`s a good start.
For Evans it`s a big win as he joined a new squad and isn`t longer a GT contender with his stats, but still good on hills and smaller stage races as Paris Nice. Unfortunately he won`t be in the TdU to show his jersey...
@ Tuco: Indeed. Was surprised, too when Evans announced the transfer, but immediately after Fuglsang left, it made sense. Actually I really like the TdU as the race runs so weird with all riders out of form. So you never know what attacks are very dangerous and which one are deperate.
As last year we start the season with the Pro Tour Race in Down Under. Often a sprinter wins the overall, but on stage 3 and especially on stage 5 the puncheurs can play a trick on them with a nice attack.
It was first held in 1999, where Stuart O'Grady won. With his 2nd win in 2001 he is also the only rider with more than one win. Although he won`t be a favourite for this years edition he is in the starting field and who knows, how he can perform with all his experience.

The TdU was quite successful for us in 2011. Hunter won one stage and the points jersey, C.Meyer the U25 ranking and Lowe the KoM jersey.
But unlucky for us that the first 4 riders survived a breakaway on stage 5, passing Willunga Hill twice. Otherwise we could have won the race. But for Hunter it was a good start into the season, where he unfortunately wasn`t able to celebrate that much.
Garmin squad in 2012
We just had to take our Australians into their home race. Most teams did so actually. Could be Australian domination this year.
As said in the presentation we don`t really have a leader here. We will give Goss a chance to sprint on his own and Haussler as lead out or co leader. It always depends on the daily form who will be the main sprinter in the end.
Normally both of them should be able to climb Willunga Hill together with the favourites.
With Lowe, Bobridge and Meyer we have good options for attacks and the KoM jersey.

***** Boasson Hagen
**** Boonen, Haussler
*** Goss, Cavendish, Bennati
** Steegmans, Ventoso, Davis, Napolitano
* Martin, Kreuziger, Van den Broeck, Taaramae, Voeckler
Boasson Hagen might be the best mix and could dominate the race with a good form. But here are lots of great sprinters and with the time bonifications they could do it over the hills.
With T.Martin, Kreuziger, Van den Broeck and Wiggins there are several good stage racers here, which prepare for the real mountains. But with a good early form they can also win here.
Strongest teams in the sprints might be Garmin with Goss and Haussler, HTC with Cavendish, Renshaw and Eisel. Astana with Davis and Brown and especially RadioShack with Ventoso, Steegmans, Vaitkus and Leezer. |

Shame you couldn't defend your double from last year, but still really good result with Haussler. |

Santos Tour Down Under - Stage 1
Clare - Tanunda
Normally this is something for the sprinters. The only KoM sprint is too far from the finish for an attack and with that many sprinter teams here, it will be very hard for a breakaway.
Sieberg (NetApp), Lancaster (Saxobank), Kern (Ag2r), Pichot (Europcar), Beppu (RadioShack), Ulissi (Lampre) and Westra (Rabobank) are the group of the day.
Cofidis and Quickstep are leading the peloton. Obviously Bonnet and Boonen feel quite good today.
Later also Sky for Hagen and Sutton, HTC for Cavendish and RadioShack for their 4 sprinters are helping.
You have seen it quite often in the last season, that RadioShack is doing pace, no matter if they have a guy in the front group. No other team has that less tactics.
But also Tony Martin is riding for Cavendish, maybe the German isn`t in a good shape and has no ambitions for the overall.
Sieberg wins the mountain sprint ahead of Lancaster and Kern and will wear the jersey tomorrow. A good performance by him in the first race for his new team.
Obviously Haussler feels better today as Goss had already some minor problems on that uphill part. But both of them are fit enough for a good sprint.
With just 4km to go the group is caught. This was damn close to a big surprise.
Haussler is in an excellent position in the middle of the Astana train with Brown and Davis.
Goss is next to Boonen behind Davis. But also RadioShack with Steegmans and Katusha for Gatto are preparing well.
But none of them. Danilo Napolitano wins the first stage of the Tour Down Under 2012. He will also get the leader and points jersey.
Haussler with an excellent 2nd ahead of Sutton, who must be strong that early.
Goss finished 5th after a close sprint with Davis and Fernandez.
So far so good.

@ Tuco: Indeed. Was surprised, too when Evans announced the transfer, but immediately after Fuglsang left, it made sense. Actually I really like the TdU as the race runs so weird with all riders out of form. So you never know what attacks are very dangerous and which one are deperate.
I agree that it is weird because of rider form. I just hate the terrain.
Good start in Stage . Going to have to beat Napolitano as he can probably hang in on the climbs. |
