Under current UCI rules these bonuses are limited to 3-2-1, which makes them pretty pointless imo given the time gains available on summit finishes and in the TT's. You're not going to see Quintana launching a raid from 80km for 3".
However ASO are requesting the UCI change the rules to allowed something like 10-7-5-3-2-1, whether this happens or not is unknown. You won't see ASO quit the UCI over this so don't hold your breath.
And either way i don't see more happening than a sprint in the final 200m a la KoM points. And of course that's ignoring any breakaways sweeping them up which is more likely!
ASO's main push to generate exciting racing is in shortening the mountain stages, there's like four of them under 130km! And by reducing the ITT km's they'll hope the purer climbers stay close to the lead and that will encourage them to attack. The time bonuses don't really feel needed after that.

At least Galibier summit is not far to the finish, just 18 km all in downhill, and Iseran is 38 km with another 7 km climb to the finish after the long descent, not bad for trying an attack.
Btw they can't upset a GC with a intermediate sprint imo, so let start with a 3-2-1 and see how dynamics will go...

Jasper Philipsen to UAE Emirates. Very good transfer season for the team, who clearly needs to improve their performances for 2019, and with Gaviria, Henao, signing young talents such as the reffered Belgian, Pogacar, Muñoz and the Oliveira twins, this should be a team to look forward to next year...

Far too many sprinters though imo. |

Good leadout tho, not the same as Quickstep but I have to say Gaviria will get a strong leadout.. Only problem may be the lack of experience in WT of many of the riders coming in

Sad to see him choose for the oil dollars, becoming a leadout for Kristoff and Gaviria is not the right career move imo.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Many sprinters not necessarily mean a good leadout. Most of theirs are final sprinters, they actually lack the real leadout.
Gaviria and Kristoff both want to get own chances in the big races. Consonni had a solid year, surely not happy to get few chances only.
Ferrari it's main rider I think who won't get chances himself, but I don't believe in his leadout skills. He simply is too chaotic at times and more a sprinter on his own.
Philipsen a pure talent, who needs some freedom as well, but hard to get . |

Let's not forget they added Juan Sebastian Molano to their roster. Indeed a plethora of sprinters, and most of all, young riders who need freedom to develop. While Molano can be easily paired with Gaviria (though I think he deserves his own chances), Consonni and most importantly, Philipsen, should race for personal results too.
Consonni at least showed consistency with top-5/8 results, and still on his second year as a pro. |

Talking about a spanish rider, Enric Mas confirms he wants to ride the TDF 2019.
Wonder if Quick-Step is letting him?

I’d say it’s a realistic chance. Though the team will be centered on a sprinter (Viviani?), Mas showed great skills without any support in the mountains this year. And it’s the big opportunity to show himself on the big stage before Sky decides to snatch him up. |
