As far as I remember, this stage is categorized as a hilly one so that may slightly explain the result. Mind you, neither Evans nor Basso and most certainly not Quintana had been inactive throughout the stage. Evans himself was even chasing now and then. It's a bit misfortunate what happened, but nothing that can't be fixed with a daring effort in Week 2. If it helps, blame Ollfardh's Belkin for letting Nibali go. But in all seriousness, I think it's good that Astana have to do the chasing now.
Besides that, Quintana is probably going to thresh through the peloton come the real mountains.
@Bikex: Trofimov is really unfortunate. He showed great fighting spirit despite Niemiec resting on his wheel. In the end, he was caught by the peloton though and didn't have the legs to make a good sprint.

Hey, we don't have a massive favourite. Chase yourself!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Yeah. I'm planning the one who is pissed off much more than I really am. I am only slightly disappointed and not more. But after Brewers really has reasons for being angry on the AI I wanted to use the same arguments for my team.
2'40'' is not that much in a Grand Tour and everything is still possible.
I was just kidding there!!!
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Well, first mountain stage and we see Reda in the breakaway and Pellizotti taking 3rd and moving into top 10 GC. Three riders finishing in the Peloton as well. Good stage for the team.

A nice attack by the boys mid-stage. Was feeling very scared while reading the report, but the Top 15 goal is still very much in reach. Let's just hope that they didn't burn too much energy early on.

Came home at around 1 o'clock and felt like playing a stage. So, uhm... here you go guys! It's a goodie in my opinion.
Stage 5
With 200 kilometer certainly a stage that demands quite something from the riders despite the rather long flat parts. Even Cancellara is listed here as a favourite, his stamina is one of a kind truthfully. The climb ahead of the finish in Matera may prove difficult for some sprinters, so guys like Brouwer and Hanzen should have great cards for today in fact. Special eyes will rest on Mark Cavendish. There has been some controversy after OPQS manager called him openly a “moron”, and L’Equipe picked up on that and titled “Is the Moron Missile finished?” We all know though that Cavendish is the best when people start to doubt him, that’s when he wants to prove to them that he is and always was the best sprinter of the world.
It’s a familiar face from the first day who makes the first attack. Nikias Arndt (ARG) is up there and Oliveira (RTL) follows him. With Astana being now in charge of things, it seems to be easier for breakaways to get initially away. However, the sprint teams are sure to pace once the finale draws closer.
Nikias Arndt takes the KoM Cat. 3 on the first kilometers. With the additional points from the first stage, he now obtains the lead with 7 points and is likely to wear the Maglia Azzurra tomorrow. Quite something for the german rouleur-sprinter.
Around the length of the intermediate sprint, with roughly 70 kilometers, the peloton increases its pace and the lead is fast decreasing. Sky, Orica GreenEdge, Androni and of course Omega Pharma are all interested in today’s stage win and won’t just let two riders get away. Arndt and Oliverei’s lead is still enough though to take the intermediate. Cavendish seems to maybe have found his old self again by coming in third and winning the intermediate sprint ahead of his rivals.
With about 20 kilometers left, and Astana working behind them, the BOTD heads into the second last climb of today. It’s a small climb and their lead is merely under two minutes by now. The will have to give everything now, the sea of flags ahead of them may further motivate them. We can spot some german flags for Arndt there too.
Arndt drops Oliveira, who has some real heavy legs by now. By taking the KoM sprint up top here, Arndt secures the Maglia Azzurra for now. At least he won’t finish the stage empty-handed, that’s for sure. He still has over a minute lead. Orica GreenEdge have their train going hard by now.
A surprise, but useless move in the descent by Betancur and Majka. It’s noteworthy though to show that the Giro isn’t by far over after yesterday’s stage. However, then again Betancur currently holds 5th.
Brouwer is dropped even ahead of the finale climb. No more points for him. He runs risk of losing the points jersey now!
Hardly any chance left for Arndt, but he keeps fighting bravely upfront. Certainly the award for most aggressive rider belongs to him today, but what will that be worth when you want to win the stage. It’s roughly 10 kilometers left and the slope hits the 5% mark by now.
Cavendish is very aware and right up there now. He has certainly learned from his mistakes on stage 1 & 3. However, an such experienced rider like him has all the quality in the world to know what he has to and when he has to. Just like Nibali, who sets an attack on the left side!
Betancur followed Nibali there, from behind Uran is rushing towards them. Quintana makes a move further back. Porte rides away from the peloton as Albasini and Gerrans can’t maintain the pace and leave a gap. This finish can be tough when you ride tough, and the boys upfront in General Classification certainly treat this like a GC stage.
There’s Quintana with Nibali and Betancur now. Behind them is the SKY duo Uran/Porte chasing them. The peloton is 40(!) seconds behind Group Nibali currently, however a solid sprint should reel them back in.
Cavendish is in position, just like Goss! However the GC riders upfront have already launched their sprint, and only Uran looks like he has no energy left for a decent punch at the finish.
The Colombians pass Nibali, while the SKY duo is struggling back there. Orica GreenEdge is coming upfront with big steps with Gerrans doing some massive work for all the sprinters in there. If one of them wins the stage, they will have to thank Gerrans for sure. And there chance still exist, as it’s still 1.8 kilometers to the finish!
Ugh, the sprint teams rely on Orica here and despite chasing nothing is happening there for too long. They should have launched it by now but they keep chasing. Gerrans may have worked too long and Matthews launches eventually later than advised. Goss and Cavendish may not have enough time as Betancur is truly impressive, already having a great lead onto his rivals.
It’s a class-A finish for Betancur, who had the strongest legs and rode very aware. One counter-attack, one sprint. That all it took for him today. And we have a special surprise for you to...
Bennati takes much needed bonus seconds away from Quintana and Nibali by defeating them on the line! Since Betancur finished 14 seconds ahead of Nibali, the Colombian is the new leader of the Giro d’Italia, by one freaking second. This is the second time already at this Giro d’Italia that a rider catches pink with a lucky second. And Betancur is also the fifth rider in the fifth stage to obtain the Maglia Rosa. If the Maglia Rosa keeps wandering around like that you may think it's a... well, you know. And maybe, if things keep changing like that, Harald Totschnig from Team Tirol may enjoy a spell in pink too at some point.
Cavendish finishes on a disappointing 10th place. The finish may have been too tough for him and one has to wonder if the OPQS is actually working here, since most of the work is usually done by Orica GreenEdge. Steegmans and Trentin have shown nothing for OPQS so far unfortunately.

Very disappointing there. Gerrans and Albasini doing a lot of work for nothing, and no repayment from the other teams, who really have to start helping. Scared that my main guys are wasting energy early.

Bad day for Brouwer, but still having the points jersey, so it's fine.
Nice win for Betancur, doing what he couldn't do irl, despite a lot of podiums.

Again not the best stage for us. Well, at least we have our goal achieved already. Point jersey might be hard if the GC riders keep attacking like this.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Wow 5 riders in 5 stages to wear the maglia rosa - is that a record of some kind?

I am really flattered that Mark managed to ride over that climb. Ok, now some proper flat stage please.
