Challenge Ciclista a Mallorca - Stage 1
Palma - Palma
The Trofeo Palma is a inner city circuit in Palma. The riders have to ride 9 full laps before sprinting for the win. The stage is quite hilly, but shouldn’t cause any problems for the sprinters.
Team objectives :
- Relax and enjoy the ride
- Top 10 with Sutton
Favourites: D.Bennati, T.Farrar, O.Freire My secret tip: Robert Hunter already raced in Tour Down Under with good results, he should have high fitness and maybe suprise us all.
Welcome to Palma.
The attention at the start was at the newest Sky signing, the German Champion, Knees and Columbain talent Uran.
As the stage is very short, we doubt breakaway has any chances, first to go is Shack with Rast.
The breakaway formed very early at the 85km, it included mostly local riders, but there were stars international starts as well, including Swiss champion Elmiger most notable.
Astana did most of the work, while we relaxed and enjoyed the views of Palma.
At 25km for the first time we could see he breakaway in the background, at this point they has a minute advantage, so mass sprint is almost certain.
At the 10km mark the break is caught and teams start to prepare the trains.
5km to finish, and Hushovd and Lorenzetto have perfect trains by their teams. Sky Arvesen is also doing great work.
3km to go and we are in good position, though Bennati is directly behind Sutton. Tyler Farrar is nowhere to be seen, and his team must be slightly disappointed after their effort today.
1km to go and it is between 5 riders, though Bennati looks unbeatable with his great acceleration.
Bennati is loosing his speed, but with 10 meters to go Sutton won’t have much time to outsprint him now, but great effort by him.
Bennati at the end makes it, with Sutton coming second, we are very happy with that, and once again proved we can compete with big guns, Robert Hunter continues his good results from Santos Down Under and completes the podium.
The Trofeo Cala Millor is a bit more difficult than the last stage. It’s almost twice as long and much hillier. We don’t think Sutton will have much energy left after the hills, so we don’t have definitive sprinter for the last 3km, we will see how the race will go on.
Team objectives :
- Relax and enjoy the ride
- Top 10 with Sutton
Favourites: D.Bennati, M.Breschel, O.Freire My secret tip: Mirco Lorenzetto showed good form yesterday, and as he is not bad on hills, he stands a chance today.
Depart in Cala Millor.
Yesterday stage had a fascinatinf finale, we hope this one will have one too. Bennati in yellow looks really strong and start this stage as biggest favourite.
After few unsuccessful breakaways we send Michael Barry to collect the Mountain jersey points today.
At the 150km mark the first breakaway forms with six riders, there is also five riders break pursuing us.
Michael Barry takes all the points, Hélder Oliveira takes second, and Diego Ulissi comes third.
Second group nearly caught the first breakaway, the break has around 4’ minutes lead on the peloton.
We attacked with Michael Barry and the attack is successful. But the gap never rises above a minute.
And once again Barry wins the King of Mountain points and secures the jersey for tomorrow.
The group joins together on the decent, surprisingly the other 5 riders break still didn’t caught us.
Garikoitz Bravo attacks, as Barry’s energy was drained from the last attack we can’t counter-attack.
Meanwhile Garmin-Cervelo leader for this tour, Johan Van Summeren had a nasty crash, and is already 1’30” minutes behind the peloton, he never gets back.
The peloton pace increased a lot, and now the gap gets smaller and smaller every minute.
At the 70km mark, the break is caught expect brave Garikoitz Bravo who has 4’00” minutes lead on the peloton.
Bravo wins the intermediate sprint, 50km to go and the lead is still 3’27”. Could he make it?
2km later the peloton reaches the sprint, Robert Hunter is the fastest men from the peloton. Sutton preserved energy for the finish.
First time in ages, the peloton can see the Onda-Boavista rider, with 25km to go his lead is slightly over the minute.
And the brave Bravo get caught at the 15km mark, brave attempt by him, but he never really stood chance against might of the peloton.
10km mark, and the first team sprints are begin to be seen.
This guy really doesn’t have best begin to his season, you remember last day of Tour Down Under, well one again Gesink has fallen 7km to go and is already 1’30” behind the peloton, with some other riders, but in front of Summeren.
5km to go and we have good position, unfortunately Sutton is very tired and doesn’t have much energy left, so Uran will be our main sprinter.
2km to go, and Arevesen leads Uran very well, Sutton is out of energy and this time won’t have decent result, but Bennati has perfect lead-out by Pedersen.
The last corner and straight to the finish line, who will be the victor today?
And surprisingly lead-out sprinter is stronger than the sprinter himself, Pedersen storms out into the lead, Uran being non-sprinter is doing g great so far.
And Pedersen wins, great victory for him and the he continues great Leoaprd results, Bennati surprisingly only 5th. Breschel get second and Duque completes the podium. And to our great delight Uran holds on the 6th position, what a great result by him, certainly great result before three decisive hilly stages and we look forward to them. Gesink comes three minutes behind, so another unfortunate end to his overall hopes.

Also question to all the readers, do you prefer to have that many pictures in the report, or less ? Do you enjoy the story more with longer reports and amount of pictures ? Or you want the story progress faster with less detalied reports and less pictures ?

The speed it fine in my opinion. Most pictures also, just 5 pictures for the sprint are quite a lot. I think on at 3km and the line should be enough maximum.
But jsut my thinking
Good result...well i make my reports without exact number of screens...it depends of what happen in the stage, sometimes i have 9 screens, sometimes few or more...flat stages are boring,so 4 or 5 screens are good.
25 screens is a quite a lot, but i really like it. Especially with your nice graphics. But it must be a hell of a work. Do you cut the SS', or do you just upload them directly? I think it's fine as it is now, but i would'nt bother, if you changed it. Keep it up!
