★☆☆☆☆
Assa Abloy is counting on Darshana Prasad to compete in the flat stages, in Paris-Nice he got two fifth places. Apart from that it will be difficult to obtain a result.

★☆☆☆☆
Anders Halland Johannessen finished 5th in the U25 last year. This year he is the co-favourite next to Leknessund. Supporting AHJ and going in breakaways should be the two main options.
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Carlsberg - Danske Bank | PT |
Last name | First name | Country | Age | FL | MT | HL | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | Aranburu | Alex | ESP | 29 | 69 | 77 | 80 | 63 | 70 | 79 | 74 | 57 | 68 | 71 | 62 | 67 | Carthy | Hugh | GBR | 30 | 71 | 81 | 75 | 67 | 77 | 76 | 78 | 56 | 60 | 69 | 65 | 65 | Eg | Niklas | DEN | 29 | 67 | 77 | 71 | 74 | 76 | 74 | 75 | 59 | 60 | 68 | 66 | 65 | Forssell | Hugo | SWD | 25 | 69 | 62 | 69 | 75 | 69 | 74 | 75 | 57 | 77 | 77 | 69 | 67 | Krigbaum | Mathias | DEN | 29 | 76 | 69 | 70 | 74 | 74 | 75 | 73 | 62 | 65 | 64 | 70 | 69 | Matsangos | Alexandros | CYP | 25 | 71 | 68 | 69 | 70 | 73 | 70 | 62 | 74 | 61 | 68 | 66 | 67 | Skjelmose Jensen | Mattias | DEN | 24 | 72 | 77 | 73 | 74 | 71 | 76 | 73 | 58 | 64 | 66 | 70 | 66 | Walls | Matthew | GBR | 26 | 74 | 61 | 61 | 61 | 73 | 71 | 73 | 62 | 80 | 78 | 60 | 64 |
★★★☆☆
Hugh Carthy finished 10th in 2023. Maybe he can go for a top 5 this edition. Alex Aranburu will be targetting the punchier stages.
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Cedevita | PT |
Last name | First name | Country | Age | FL | MT | HL | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | Christodoulos | Michael | CYP | 27 | 72 | 68 | 68 | 78 | 75 | 69 | 70 | 53 | 53 | 64 | 73 | 65 | Ciccone | Giulio | ITA | 30 | 67 | 77 | 73 | 71 | 70 | 70 | 73 | 50 | 51 | 69 | 59 | 59 | Currie | Logan | NZL | 23 | 71 | 62 | 62 | 74 | 70 | 71 | 68 | 53 | 63 | 70 | 64 | 72 | Geoghegan Hart | Tao | GBR | 29 | 70 | 79 | 74 | 78 | 76 | 74 | 75 | 62 | 62 | 69 | 70 | 70 | Groselj | Matic | SLO | 28 | 78 | 58 | 66 | 77 | 74 | 78 | 71 | 67 | 73 | 72 | 69 | 70 | Habtemichael | Daniel | ERI | 27 | 67 | 78 | 74 | 74 | 74 | 73 | 76 | 52 | 59 | 66 | 68 | 69 | Lammertink | Steven | NED | 31 | 74 | 64 | 69 | 80 | 70 | 76 | 70 | 65 | 63 | 68 | 74 | 68 | Penko | Izidor | SLO | 28 | 71 | 68 | 71 | 76 | 73 | 74 | 71 | 58 | 65 | 70 | 62 | 71 |
★★☆☆☆
Tao Geoghegan Hart should compete for a top 10 spot. Additionally the team will look forward to the TTT and (mountain) breakaways.
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | EA Vesuvio | PT |
Last name | First name | Country | Age | FL | MT | HL | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | Alaphilippe | Julian | FRA | 32 | 72 | 66 | 73 | 62 | 74 | 69 | 81 | 65 | 77 | 77 | 75 | 73 | Firdaus | Ahmad | INA | 24 | 69 | 75 | 72 | 73 | 71 | 74 | 76 | 54 | 62 | 71 | 77 | 74 | Geniets | Kevin | LUX | 27 | 74 | 70 | 78 | 68 | 75 | 77 | 71 | 64 | 62 | 69 | 75 | 69 | Girdlestone | Keagan | RSA | 27 | 71 | 77 | 72 | 74 | 77 | 73 | 75 | 55 | 61 | 68 | 68 | 65 | Gunnlaugsson | Kristofer | ISL | 29 | 77 | 67 | 65 | 76 | 73 | 79 | 70 | 66 | 75 | 72 | 60 | 60 | John | Naveen | IND | 29 | 67 | 70 | 68 | 73 | 69 | 71 | 71 | 58 | 64 | 67 | 73 | 66 | Mohoric | Matej | SLO | 30 | 72 | 71 | 83 | 64 | 78 | 72 | 72 | 50 | 67 | 77 | 71 | 79 | Wirtgen | Luc | LUX | 26 | 70 | 75 | 75 | 64 | 73 | 72 | 74 | 58 | 66 | 68 | 70 | 69 |
★☆☆☆☆
The best shot for EA Vesuvio looks to be the punchy stages with Matej Mohoric and Julian Alaphilippe as leaders, next to breakaways.
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Evonik - ELKO | PT |
Last name | First name | Country | Age | FL | MT | HL | TT | ST | RS | RC | CB | SP | AC | FG | DH | Baroncini | Filippo | ITA | 24 | 73 | 65 | 74 | 72 | 73 | 76 | 71 | 63 | 67 | 72 | 74 | 70 | Bellan | Juraj | SVK | 28 | 70 | 75 | 69 | 73 | 77 | 75 | 78 | 56 | 62 | 63 | 71 | 65 | Eekhoff | Nils | NED | 26 | 75 | 60 | 68 | 75 | 76 | 77 | 67 | 74 | 70 | 71 | 67 | 64 | Foss | Tobias | NOR | 27 | 69 | 78 | 72 | 77 | 77 | 79 | 79 | 66 | 60 | 69 | 68 | 66 | Gavars | Eriks Toms | LAT | 27 | 70 | 75 | 74 | 73 | 71 | 73 | 72 | 58 | 67 | 70 | 70 | 67 | Plapp | Luke | AUS | 24 | 71 | 77 | 75 | 75 | 72 | 77 | 74 | 58 | 62 | 68 | 73 | 65 | Sureda | Jaume | ESP | 28 | 73 | 63 | 71 | 61 | 71 | 69 | 75 | 65 | 77 | 79 | 72 | 65 | Van Niekerk | Morne | RSA | 29 | 76 | 61 | 67 | 78 | 73 | 75 | 72 | 64 | 61 | 67 | 72 | 64 |
★★★☆☆
Evonik - ELKO has a well balanced team for the TTT. In the mountains they will support Tobias Foss for GC and Luke Plapp for U25. Maybe Sureda can surprise in the sprints.
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Fastned | PT |

★★★☆☆
Fastned is counting on the Belgian Tim Wellens for a good GC, maybe a podium. Steff Cras is the backup leader and Gonzalez Sales will target the ITT.
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Grieg-Maersk | PT |

Didn't expect to have Olivier so high in the favourites list but we'll take. Also, this is just fun for us, with no points on offer from wildcards. Coincidentally, this is the first race for Olivier this season, go figure! Hoping for some fun in the sprints with Kulikovskiy as well. Not sure how much either of our TT guys will have left by the time we reach the last stage.
Thanks for the preview
Spoiler I will be posting the stages for kb till Sunday.

Thanks for the extensive preview, Laurens!
Our goal(s) here is/are clear. Eastman for a podium, ideally a second place. Latour seems to be the biggest rival in the mountains for that, with a good TTT as well. But Eastman's ITT and TTT must be enough to make up for possible lost time in the mountains against other rivals, at least that's the hope. And with 82 mtn and decent back ups he might as well gain time himself in the mountains. Just a little bit scared of the hills in the beginning and possible stupid timegaps that could be easily avoided but where pcm itself has shown multiple times stupid stuff can happen.
We're here to win the TTT and hopefully the ITT as well, although the competition is definitely strong as well. Good luck to all!

What a preview, makes me regret not asking for wildcards. Hard to see past Herklotz here, but we all know what happened last year
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Excited to see if Gaudu and Roman can prove some value here. Mostly looking for breakaways, so hopefully the AI sees us as stage hunters.
Herklotz the big, big favourite. The question mostly seems to be just how dominant the race will be from him.

Thanks to Laurens for the great preview and for KB for taking on the reporting
This was my course so interested to see how it plays out. Idea was to avoid any really decisive stages until late in the race and keep lots of folks in with a shot at pink. However, Herklotz' talents are hard to account for.
I do worry a little about Eastmen, steep hills at the end of easy stages are ridden fast and that his where his weak HI can come in. But if he gets the lead in the TTT that should help to get him good positioning.
Good luck to everyone.

Weakest GT lineup for us but between Foss and Plapp as well as Sureda, we do have a few intriguing options available for us that should keep this race interesting for me. Very unusual for us to be mentioned amongst the better TTT teams, could give us an edge especially in the youth classification since the other contenders seem to have below average TTT lineups. Getting in the lead there early would be very sweet.
If Foss could finish near the top of that third tier of stage racers competing for a top 10 finish, that would be pretty good.
Enough teams without a good sprinter that Sureda should at least join the sprints. From there, everything is possible...
Herklotz the obvious favourite for pink. Rather weak podium contenders list behind him. Main question is: How many stages can he win? Maybe some of the puncheurs can limit his success a bit. Wouldnt mind if they prevent the complete journey in pink from the first day to the last
Great preview!

We had a great time at the Giro last year, let's hope we can repeat that with a somewhat different lineup. Stüssi is still there, but with a weaker support cast, mostly due to our general lack of climbers, but also because of the TTT.
Speaking of the latter, we'd obviously take a podium spot, and if we play it well (i.e. dropping Szarka and Errazkin early on), it could indeed happen.
These two should be our stage hunters, Errazkin in the hills and maybe some breakaways, Szarka in the sprints - which might even work, given that the sprinter list is extremely thin. TTT maybe being a reason, but probably mainly everyone seeing Herklotz and Yates coming here, so no serious chance for the Ciclamino.
Herklotz should - on paper - easily win this race. But we might remember last year's Giro, with Shikai's upset, not the least due to rather weak climbing support - which could happen again. And he's not the best TTer, so if Eastman in particular can stay close, and Herklotz doesn't win too many hilly stages...
Generally speaking, I only see two stages for the climbers to gain a lot of ground - and also two where they could lose quite some time, the TTT and the ITT. Even though I agree that Latour is a great rider, he'll have to be very strong in the mountains to get a GC podium imho, with the TTT lineup being heavily unbalanced and Latour not the best rider in the ITT as well. Instead, I definitely fancy Eastman's chances - and why not Tao Hart? His TTT is great, and he's one of the best against the clock, so if he doesn't lose too much time in the high mountains, a Top 5 could be on the table. At least he's my dark horse. Otherwise, I think Almeida could do a great job here.
Thanks for the preview, good luck to all!

Very interesting squad that I totally forgot I sent here.
Gonna need a lot of luck here, but it's not impossible for us to do something GC wise. TTT is gonna be rough, but beyond that it's not a ton of TT KM's. Hopefully Carthy has good climbing legs and can make the most of his opportunities with that. I also totally forgot I sent Aranburu here, so hopefully that isn't wasted. SOme stage oportunities, and maybe he can do KOM? And cool to see Skjelmose already as a white jersey contender. He won't get it, but still cool to see him on the list.
A bit worried about Walls. Kinda thought he would be in the 4-7 range sprinter wise, but he's actually probably a top 3 favorite, which is often less than ideal. We don't have a sprint train, so hopefully he just surfs wheels and doesn't go too early.
We obviously need to overperform, so chances are we will do something at our level that I'm still not satisfied with. But I will do my best to enjoy the race and process regardless of the outcome. Easier said than done.
Thanks for the preview!

This is complicated for AHJ, I’m afraid. We don’t have any team to support him, but it is him only we hope for to go breakaway and stage hunting in the mountains. He is our only card. Really hope AI threats him as GC top 20 rider, with the obvious breakaway attempts in the final week. Though, with the hilly stages and TTT early on, I fear he won’t be seen as a GC rider.
Other than AHJ, we don’t have much here, it’s our weakest GT lineup. Hoping we join breakaways on the easier stages as well, with no sprinter present. |

Very simple race for us. We're all in for Tao Geoghegan Hart to get a top 10 GC since that's our sponsor goal. We don't expect a lot of scoring in the race, but if we get the top 10 then I'll be happy. Of course I wouldn't mind Habtemichael and Ciccone giving us depth points and some scoring from the TTs
It should be a very easy race for Herklotz to win. Best case maybe Yates finds a way to wrestle ciclamino away from him.
Thanks for the preview to Laurens and to KB for the upcoming reports

This came faster than expected.
Wellens with his season debut here. And immediately a top5 chance. Top7 is the goal. Cras as only support will struggle a bit but it's more a TTT support lineup.
Unfortunately I struggle to be active right now. Xmas days being around travelling more than 2000 km around Germany in total this week and then going onto vacation until 2nd week of January and at many times with very limited internet.
Will try to re-read all missed reports and the Giro as consistent as possible.
Thanks for the first report and for taking the GT. |

Decent start, but had hoped to have a man in the front group. Herklotz ready to dominate from the start, congrats cio!

As Laurens' great preview plainly says, a super weak squad from us here - certainly compared to Bennett + Fouche + Pidcock + Tesfaye and more last year! Fouche and Tesfaye return for more breakaway fun - last year Fouche won a stage and Tesfaye was super aggressive and got a stage podium (?) and nearly held onto another late attack, so just want more of the same - good to see Fouche starting well there and actually having his strongest finish of the season so far really hanging onto the front group! Wouldn't mind him losing some time though but taking it day by day.
Expected it but slightly sad at how strong the sprint startlist is in terms of lots of the third tier guys which will make it hard for Hamza to get a look in. If he can be competing for Top 10 placings while we enter into breakaways then I'll be happy.
Congrats cio on the stage, Mission 20 Days in Pink starts now!

Nice job by TGH on the opening stage. Keeping the time gaps at a minimum will be his goal for the majority of the uphill stages.

Not an ideal start. Foss losing a minute on most direct opponents is far from perfect and Plapp basically already lost touch to the top 20 GC spots which could have been a somewhat ambitious GC target for him.
Only positive is that every other u25 rider also lost a ton of ground already. So Plapp is still very much in the front group there and might be in the scoring are after the ttt, depending on the next stage.
