Copenhagen–Malmo Team Time Trial
We are in Denmark today for the 12th edition of the Copenhagen-Malmo Team Time Trial. The race has existed for all 17 mangame seasons although it spent its first 5 years in Eindhoven.
The race covers the now familiar 59km course across the Øresund Bridge. EA Vesuvio and their predecessor incarnations are the stand out team in this race. Not only have they participated in every edition, they hold the record for most total wins (5 – I believe Saunier-Duval was the original EA Vesuvio) and most consecutive wins (3). They will look to add to both records with a 4th consecutive win this year. They have had a somewhat all or nothing relationship with this race their 5 victories are accompanied by just one other top 5 (2nd in 2009). They also finished last once, in 2016.
A full startlist of 24 teams including Benetton Bimex and Minions from the PCT will be on the startline. Rabobank, Carlsberg, Assa Abloy and Xero all send less than 8 riders suggesting they may not be too worried about this one and they are all near the bottom of rankings.
Teams ranked by the average of their full squad:
Team | Riders | All | Top 5 | Top 3 | Gaps | EA Vesuvio | 8 | 78.8 | 79.4 | 80.3 | 84-5-1-0-0-0-0-1 | Oxxo - Frisby | 8 | 78.0 | 79.4 | 80.3 | 82-2-1-1-0-1-1-2 | Grieg-Maersk | 8 | 76.8 | 78.2 | 79.3 | 83-5-1-0-1-0-1-3 | Tinkoff Team - La Datcha | 8 | 76.6 | 78.6 | 79.0 | 79-0-0-0-2-1-3-2 | Jura GIANTS | 8 | 76.3 | 77.4 | 77.7 | 78-0-1-0-0-2-1-0 | Cedevita | 8 | 76.1 | 77.8 | 78.7 | 80-2-0-1-1-2-1-0 | King Power | 8 | 75.9 | 77.8 | 78.3 | 80-2-1-0-0-1-4-2 | ZARA - Irizar | 8 | 75.4 | 76.8 | 77.3 | 78-0-2-0-0-2-0-3 | Team Puma - SAP | 8 | 75.0 | 76.0 | 76.7 | 77-0-1-1-0-1-1-0 | Lidl Cycling | 8 | 74.1 | 75.8 | 77.0 | 78-1-1-2-0-2-0-2 | Evonik - ELKO | 8 | 73.6 | 75.2 | 76.7 | 78-1-2-2-0-1-1-1 | Fastned | 8 | 73.4 | 74.6 | 76.0 | 80-6-0-1-1-0-0-2 | Gazelle | 8 | 73.4 | 75.0 | 76.3 | 78-1-3-0-2-0-2-0 | Benetton Bimex Cycling | 8 | 72.4 | 75.4 | 78.0 | 80-2-2-3-3-1-0-5 | Minions | 8 | 72.1 | 74.8 | 77.3 | 80-3-2-2-4-0-2-0 | cycleYorkshire | 8 | 71.6 | 76.0 | 78.0 | 79-1-1-2-4-1-7-3 | Moser - Sygic | 8 | 71.3 | 74.2 | 77.7 | 78-0-1-7-2-0-2-1 | Polar | 8 | 69.6 | 72.8 | 76.7 | 81-3-7-3-2-1-1-0 | MOL Cycling Team | 8 | 68.3 | 71.6 | 74.3 | 76-2-1-3-5-2-0-1 | Rabobank | 7 | 67.4 | 70.8 | 73.3 | 77-3-5-2-0-7-2 | Carlsberg - Danske Bank | 6 | 66.5 | 67.4 | 69.3 | 70-0-2-3-1-2 | Aker - MOT | 8 | 64.0 | 66.0 | 67.0 | 71-6-0-0-1-2-0-4 | Assa Abloy | 6 | 64.0 | 65.0 | 68.3 | 72-0-11-1-0-1 | Xero Racing | 6 | 60.3 | 62.0 | 65.3 | 72-9-2-3-2-4 |
PT newcomers Oxxo – Frisby are the only team who appear to be a serious challenge to EA Vesuvio extending their record. Their top 3 and 5 riders average match the favorites but their total squad isn’t quite as deep.
Former winners Grieg and Tinkoff both bring top quality squads but overall they are a full point below EA Vesuvio and Oxxo – Frisby. Jura and Cedevita both average out over 76 as well but neither are as strong at the top end.
However, results from last year suggest that the strength of the bottom of the squad is as important as the strength at the top, and top-heavy teams suffered some significant setbacks. The Gap column shows the TT value of the best rider in the squad and then the drop off to each successive rider.
With the budgets available in the PT most teams who have put together a serious team, carry their strength through all or nearly all their riders. EA Vesuvio has incredible consistency with the only significant gap from the world class Wirtgen to their second rider. Teams like Polar and cycleYorkshire might perform worse than their average suggests as their high-quality top 3 outpace the weaker riders at the bottom of the squad – but neither would have been expecting a top result.

Going to be a stronger TTT unit for us next year but this year we fall just outside the Top 5 favourites. Would need a huge effort to get up into that Top 5 but just hope we don't end up below where we really should.
Thanks for the preview and let's see if Vesuvio can live up to their favourites tag

After selling Kamna and abandoning TT's, it wasn't worth wasting race days of my stage racers to fight for the 15-20 spots. We'll enjoy a nice leisurely stroll and move on with our season, even if it means disappointing some home fans.

We're looking to cross the finish line here
EA must be favourites. Cool to see newly promoted Oxxo be favourites for 2nd place, that takes quite something coming up from the PCT. The battle for the final podium spot should be an open one, as judging by the stats, any of the five teams following Oxxo should have the potential for a podium if they get it right. |

We are a top half (or even top 10???) contender here. What are we doing?!

Thank you for the numerical in depth preview, Ulrich! Second place would be amazing, so I'd gladly take that. The game even wants us to start last for some extra pressure apparently, let's hope the guys can perform under pressure
Good luck to all.

First season goal for us, and given the preview we should really be able to get this one. 5th considering all riders, 7th with just the Top 5 riders - and 7th is what I'd actually expect. Given that some teams left some riders at home that I expected to see here, maybe I should still have brought Rekita - but his Portugal prologue suggests that my gamble to send him there wasn't completely wrong...
EA are the obvious favourites once again - but Wirtgen definitely needs to make sure not to tire his teammates with his insane TT speed. In that respect, I like my team quite a lot with a dropoff of just 4 points between strongest and weakest member, which is matched only by Puma. And I think no other team has the Top 5 riders within just 1 stat point - we'll see if that actually matters.
Thanks for the preview!

Wanted to build up a stronger base, but it didn't quite workout. So good news in that sense that we are still podium contenders here. Let's see if we actually can do it ... I smell a EA win, but this race is always close.

We're not nearly at the same level as last year, so 6th seems about right and it's what I expected.
Thanks for the report

Favourite win, nice to see.
10th is pretty fine for me. Couldn't expect more than a mid table result. Even with Phinney it likely could have gone up to 6th only, so not really worth it sending him here when he can win elsewhere. |

A bit annoyed with the result with four teams within 8 seconds ahead of us and a large gap behind us. Feels like we ended up unlucky with that. Still our best result here.
Also i enjoyed ttt reports a lot more when reporters could mock my ttt team

7th is what I expected, 7th is what I got. With 10" gaps ahead and behind of us, I guess there wasn't much we could do, even sending Rekita wouldn't have been a game changer. We'll need that 80+ TTer locomotive (or a big bunch of 79ers) to do better, but that's definitely possible in the next couple of years.
Congrats to EA on yet another TTT win, and well done to Oxxo for giving EA a proper fight! Guess that bodes rather well for Paris-Nice and the Giro in the near future
