Welcome to our first PTHC encounter of the season with the Australian Great Ocean Road Classic. We are looking for a successor to Nick Van der Lijke (EA Vesuvio). The Dutchman is again on the starting list, but more as an outsider this time. Max Kanter (Team Puma - SAP) is also returning after being runner-up last season. The German warmed up in Qatar with 1x top-5 and 3 additional top-10 sprint outings. Bryan Coquard is the first on the favourite list. He's looking to score big to give Manada Coyote a headstart in the PCT (survival) battle.
Salem Kemboi (Lidl Cycling) is a sprinter who's already travelled to Australia this season. He got a podium spot in the opening stage at Tour of Tasmania, but couldn't confirm in Qatar with only a 7th spot as highest placement. The same can be said from Alberto Dainese (Assa Abloy), the Italian finished 12th, 2x 14th and 2x 15th in Qatar. He'll be looking to do similar or even better than last year in GORC, when he finished fourth. Caleb Ewan (ISA - Hexacta) is eager to do better than his opening race at Down Under Classic, where he finished 11th. Contrary to Ewan, Stanislaw Aniolkowski (Team Popo4Ever) is firing on all cylinders with a win in the opening stage at Tour of Qatar. He added a 4th and 5th place later on in the race.
The main challenger for Coquard looks to be Eduard Grosu (Rabobank): excellent form after finishing 1st, 2nd and 2x 5th in the opening four stages in Qatar. Other guys to watch are Matti Manninen (Xero) with a third place in Qatar S5, Lionel Coutinho (Specialized) with a third place in Down Under Classic and Tour Down Under S1 and Tomohiro Hayakawa (Everesting) with a win in Qatar S5. Finally we close this preview with some rouleurs who have been succesful here in the past. We identify Alexander Konychev (Assa Abloy), Stepan Kurianov (Evonik - ELKO), Goran Antonijevic (cycleYorkshire), Mark Dzamastagic (Specialized) and Peter Varga (Team Popo4Ever) as main options for that scenario.

Kurianov worked nicely here with a 16th place last year. A repeat of that would be nice but i also wouldnt mind a proper late attack by any of my guys - particularly here with late attacks working in two of the last three editions.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Chance to win this is obviously there with both Aniolkowski and Varga, and I feel like it's time for some Varga magic, it's already been too long without some of that!

Australia hasn't been too sympathetic with us and this race doesn't really suit our strengths either, so any result is a good result here. Thanks for the preview, Laurens!

Thanks for the preview! Classics have been our go to this season already with two really good results, time to go three for three!

Only here because we have to be. A day in the break would be fun.
Be nice to see Dainese or Cullaigh do something after they both suffered in Qatar.

Another flat race this month, another chance for Hodeg to steal some points. If he gets anywhere near his Guadeloupe results we'll be happy, but probably we'll rather get a DUC kind of result.

Maybe I need to start investing in baroudeurs instead of sprinters. Very nicely done by Davies! Thank you for the report Imladrik.

Kurianov tried at least but I'm not happy about the timing (when the chase after the break is still on) and i am really a bit annoyed that we didnt get into the break as we didnt have much else to hope for

What a wild result, congrats on the upset KB!
Best result of the season for us as well. Was already happy to see the Ghanainan NC jersey on the break, but I'll take 5th in a PTHC race every day of the week. It's even more important given Hayakawa missed the sprint entirely.
Thanks for the breautiful report Imladrik!

A big surprising win here for us, adding 200 points we wouldn't have dreamed of to our tally and turning January from the expected low-scoring season opening to a huge success! We'll happily take it in our battle against relegation.
To the race itself: getting two riders into the break was already a good sign (and having the breakaway-legend-to-be Marte with them too), leaving us with some actual hope early in the race. We had lots of success with such a setup last season (I recall five stage wins out of multi-rider-appearances in breaks) and though we didn't get an additional podium (as in four of those cases) it's clearly one of the biggest wins in team history: it's our first PTHC win (in our first PTHC race) and also our first win in a classic. And it's done by a great team effort from our talents Louvel and Askey, which is a great sign for the season(s) to come as we clearly need our youngsters to score well (and it's also great fun on top).
Finally big thanks to Imladrik for the report, you're clearly a good omen for us (after last year's ToA)!

Huge day for the PCT teams, especially for Ekoi. Congrats!
Would have been nice to get a podium here. Should have been more careful with the breakaway.

Can second 100% of this post
Really weird to see a breakaway win in a PT/PTHC flat classic. Late attacks happen, but a breakaway taking it is a rare sight at this level if I'm not wrong. So well done, definitely some huge unexpected points for Ekoi!

I didn't really fancy Van der Lijke for pure sprinting options this season but couldn't pass over the chance to defend a title. 20th but well, you have to try!

Kemboi winning the sprint for 8th with one of our loaned out riders ahead in 4th just about sums up this season so far. Congrats to kb and thanks for the report! |
