Tour l'Avenir - Discussion

Tour l'Avenir

It's time for the battle of our young riders again. The annual Tour l'Avenir will show us again the strengths and maybe also weaknesses of our talents when they will fight for the crown of being the best amongst them. On 9 Stages everyone will get the chance to shine and maybe also raise their market value for the upcomming season! So let's find out where are the best young sprinters, climbers, rolleurs, puncheurs, TT-Specialists and stage racers!

Race Profile

i.imgur.com/TUiLKFR.jpg

We start this year in Belgium on a short flat prologue. The specialists for this can here get the chance to wear the first leader jersey.
The second stage will continue in Belgium. This will be a flat route with oportunities for some breakaways with the small ramps every hear and there. But maybe the newly formed Teams here are strong enough to keep the peloton together so we can see a mass sprint.
At stage 3 we visit for the first time France with a similar profile than the stage before. On paper it looks even less challenging so a mass sprint is the most likely scenario.
The fourth raceday will be the first to show how the next generation of puncheurs will perform. In Belgium and the finish in Luxembourg we have a really hilly profile where we most likely will see a more spread field than the das before.
On the next race day, the 5th stage, we then settle in France. Heading towards the mediterrean sea and having a really flat stage to Nimes. Another day for the sprinter most likely. And a day for the GC favorites to warm up their legs, this is definitely needed with the upcomming challenges.
With starting the 6th stage we also will start with climbing. We start in Gap and head towards the Col du Granon. Three steep and long climbs awaits us here and the last one, up the Col du Granon, will show us who has ambitions to win the whole race this year.
After an exhausting day before for the GC favorites its this time probably a stage for some breakaways who couldnt shine the day before. Some small ramps at the end should make it possible for our puncheurs to go for the victory. But this also means our stage racers need to be cautious to not lose some valuable seconds or minutes here.
At the second last race day we start in Givors for our longest stage this year. 241 kilometres our field has to go, it's not an easy one also. The first 220 kilometres looks like a chance for our puncheurs again. But it all changes at the end: Mount Ventoux. A legendary moutain which is definitely too much for most riders. We will see big gaps here and it's important for the captains to preverve all their energy till they arrive at the foot of the climb.
We had quite some challenges till we arrived at the final stage. Most likely there are already also noticable gaps at the GC. But all will be decided today. So why not climb the Mount Ventoux again? This time alone just the young riders against the clock. No tactics, not playing around, just riding as hard and fast up the mountain. Even if you lost some time on days before, today you can gain as much as your legs will allow.

Who will come out first after all of this?

Favourites

(The rider jerseys displayed here are for the ones from their normal team.)

GC Favorites

This year we have a really hard race which definitely puts the riders with serious climbing skills in favorite. But since its over 9 stages up to 241 km their physical attributes shouldnt be overlooked. We have a Prologue and a MTT so this should be in consideration too. Generally the field isnt as clear as it is in a normal race. So lets see here a selection of overall well balanced riders who should have a shot at the GC.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Skjelmose and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Plapp are here the best climbers and overall just very talented riders, they are definitely favorites for this race. A bit of a question mark might be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Evenepoel, he isnt far behind those two when it comes to the climbing and has some other exceptionell skills. But we dont know how he will be able to handle a quiet long Tour with 9 stages.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Ahmad, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Van Wilder and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Balmer are also very talented future stage racers but not quite up the quality of the first ones maybe (yet). This goes for almost everyone on the list here. They all have a bright future.
A sleeper might be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Van Dijke , who isnt the best when it comes to long steep climbs. But he is overall such a versatile rider that he might be able to be a contender too. If he isnt in a role to just help pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Hayter.

Puncheurs

These guys may not be top favorites when it comes to the GC at the end but they for sure are favorites for some of the stages with their exceptionel skills at shorter steep climbs.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Govekar we will probably see ahead at a stage trying to win one. Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Stöckli wouldnt be a surprise, even on a harder stage he can go with the best and trying to win one of the Mountain stages. We will have to see if he then can even sneak into the Top of the GC.
Here are just a lot to be named overall and to look out for. I am sure there will be surprises also who arent on any list yet.

Sprinters

The Guys with the fast and strong legs. There are also some chances for them of course with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Girmay being the strongest among them. He could even snatch some stages that are a bit harder. I think it will be very hard for the others to surpass him in a sprint finish but its definitely not impossible.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Vernon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Plowright are also really strong when it comes to the mass sprint. With Vernon even being able to wear the first Leaders Jersey with his exceptionell Prologue skills. Same goes for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Milan with a similar Skillset.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Willems and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Kooij are 2 of the guys in its first season to watch here. Strong sprinters who wanna show what they can do in the future in this race too.

Thats a fraction of the riders to mention here. Like stated before in a race and with a field like this there are many other possible outcomes and it's a chance for every rider here to show what they got. Even if the rider isnt mentioned here this doesnt mean they have no chance!

This is one of my favourite races of the season! Garibian is our GC captain for once, but without a sprinter or any clear favourite for any of the stages the breaks of the day have to be our goal.
Thanks to Ezee for the nice preview and best of luck to all of you. Have fun!

Remco will win by a landslide. Hoping for stage 1 win for Kmieliauskas and a top 15 GC finish, but that will be tough to achieve

After having Mäder and Schmid as GC competitors in recent years, our riders are just here as helpers for once. Balmer should be the UBS - Jura leader, and we'll try to protect him as well as we can.
Maybe Page can already compete in some sprints; he should be among the fastest sprinters next year, and Janssen could get a decent result in the prologue.

Thanks for the preview, good luck (and a lot of fun) to everyone!

With difficult profiles like this year and this start list it will be quite interesting to see how it turns out. Like i rotw Evenpoel will be interesting to watch and i think after this we then also know how much influence the recovery stat really has Grin

Our team doesnt have any ambitions GC wise but i hope we can show our colors in breakaways and maybe some sprints with Stalberg. Though for Sprints Girmay looks superior but this is PCM after all Grin

We could've used this route last year when we still had Ardila Rolling Eyes

Govekar looks like an outsider for a hilly stage result, apart from that maybe Selimovic can show his breakaway chops in a different jersey.

Time to see the wonderful Conglomerate team in action <3

This is the very rare case where i actually have a good contender here with Plapp as one of the top favorites. Hope he can deliver nicely.

Thanks to ezee.

Not only a super fun team but also a really strong one. Not only Plapp as a top favorite but also a solid sprinter / stage hunter Van Dijke duo and possibly the strongest support team.

Names represented on the back of the jersey represent riders who have raced for at least two of the "Conglomerate teams" of Isostar, Netia, Sony, Xero and Evonik and our amateur teams in very rare cases.

We haven't had true contenders in Avenir yet over the past years, so it should be fun to root for Willems to compete for actual stage wins. Habimana could be able to do something in the hilly stages. But the real fun will be next year, when both of them plus Van Eetvelt will still be eligible and should be among the stronger riders in the field.

Thanks for the preview, looking forward to the reports Smile

Excited to see how we go as the Conglomerate as it is the first time we've teamed up. A very strong team will turn up to try and help Plapp to the win, and also get some stage results along the way. knockout already did a great job with the team presentation, so looking forward to the race now.

Thanks for the preview Ezee Smile

Probably my most important race in the second half of the season. Plapp is better and has the better team, but you never know what can happen out there on the road! Podium is the more realistic goal but a win would be special.
