Amstel Gold Race - Discussions
Imladrik
Another well known classic is bound to wrap up April for the PT peloton. 257 km of Dutch hills await the brave riders, an important appetizer before Liège – Bastogne – Liège, soon enough. But let’s talk about the Netherlands, for now.

Boasson Hagen is the only other to have won the race more than one time (2011 and 2013).
Let’s add that Sagan’s victory was in 2017.

Not many solo win for this race. Most of the time, a group of around twenty comes together at the foot of the last climb, and then it’s for the best puncheur! Will it be different this year?

3rd in 2021, 6th in 2022, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez has yet to win this race. With his superiors climbing skills, an excellent stamina and a good team with him – Blums should be his main lieutenant – he’s the biggest favorite of the day. Not far though, we have 2021 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png De Bie, who’s on an even better shape.
Though is (by not much) not as good as them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko (2020 winner, 2nd in 2021 and 3rd in 2022) will want to avoid to get lower in the rankings. He’s got for him the best acceleration of the field, which could help him to take a small advantage on the opposition.
Then one has to consider the more resistant of the riders in the race: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Skujins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy. Skujins in particular was 2nd in 2020 and 4th last season.
Finally, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates has a good combination of uphill and sprinting skills, which make him the last of the biggest favorites.

Of course, others might disrupt the field of the favorites. But let’s be honest, we don’t believe too much in them in such a stellar field. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Aranburu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Gaudu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Geniets, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Ardila could try to play a role in the race, though.

Thanks for a great preview Imladrik! One hell of a start list which is to be expected in a race of this calibre.

I'm certainly hopeful that Borges is seen at the front close to the end. Anything in the Top 10 would be an amazing result as I see him more around the 15-20 mark realistically. My hopes are that his greater ACC, compared to many, is what gets him over the line!

Looking forward to this one and good luck to our competition Wink

Hoping for a top 20 from Gaudu with anyone else making the top 50 as a bonus.

Thanks for the preview.

Given how Koretzky have performed all season, I suspect this will be a total no show from him.

We do have some solid depth here however, so we might manage to steal something minor.

We need a good Ardeness season at the moment. That means Formolo in the top 10 in all three races, which is not very likely to be happening.

Will be interesting to see how Gerts does too. This game has not be kind to him, especially in the hilly races.

Don't really have any hopes here. Aranburu is our lead puncheur, and this is pretty much the exact opposite type of hilyl race for him to succeed in. Maybe Juul-Jensen can win from the break.

This was one of our very best days last season, with Mohoric running away with the win. A top 10 must be expected, and then I'm hoping for a top 5, which will make it a great race from him. And seeing how such hilly classics tend to play out, anyone fighting for a top 5, maybe even a top 10, can also win the race, as it often is very close amongst them.

Time for Kinoshita to shine. It will be a critical part of the season for us

Not too confident regarding McCarthy's Top-10 chances, although it would be for a nice surprise after the Giro bummer.

Ardennes week is obviously huge for us. Lopez needs to start picking up results now after zhose risky and ultimately disappointing races are over now. Of course, LBL is the big one and i would priorize a win there over the other ones but a good result here would be nice.

Well, as to expected no real chance for a Top-10..

Thanks for the report!

That's a good effort from Formolo. Exactly what we needed.

Gerts very bad again. I guess it's the mountain stat that is dragging him down as Remco did very well to finish 25th with a lower flat+hills combo, but a better mountain stat. Still, I wasn't expecting the mountain stat to matter this much in a race like Amstel.

Sucks that Gesink finished dead last too. But, hey, at least he got to race his home race one last time.

I was hoping for slightly more than 23rd from Madouas, but it's also not too far off his level so I can't complain.
There might've been more in it if he hadn't been badly positioned earlier, but then again it's better than not catching up anymore at all.

Congrats to King Power on a close win, and thanks Imladrik for reporting! Smile

Fine result. Was hoping for more but in this race, a 4th place is good enough.

Congrats bikex!

10th was kind of the minimum in this particular classic, as I hoped it was the one of the Ardennes suiting Mohoric the best. Also slightly disappointed in our complete lack of depth, as I had a minor hope the rouleur type like Swift could do a top 50 here. Not meant to be! Luckily the chances come quick, less hope for the remaining two, but at least it's Mohoric once again in action Grin

Big congratulations to Bikex! Gidich winning such a race felt like long overdue. What a rider he has become.

Solid sprint by Lutsenko. Third is a good result in this field.
Also honourable mentions to Malecki, Peters and Konrad for grabbing those 20th to 30th range depth points.

Grats bikex! And good job Imladrik
