GP Liechtenstein
The race is reported by whitejersey
Welcome to the 12th edition of the GP Liechtenstein classic. The profile of the race has been pretty much the same since its debut in 2012. The course consists of a circuit with a difficult, but not too long climb which will be tackled a total of thirteen times before the final ascent. There they will veer off halfway up to an even higher altitude. There is no hiding in this race, it's a pure mountain race designed for the best climbers in the world. The only top riders that miss this race are those who are riding the Giro d'Italia.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| MO | HI | ST | RS | AC | DH | Lecuisinier | 85 | 75 | 78 | 80 | 74 | 70 | Kudus | 85 | 77 | 79 | 77 | 70 | 67 | Herklotz | 84 | 81 | 79 | 80 | 76 | 76 | Morton | 84 | 76 | 79 | 78 | 67 | 68 | Phinney | 84 | 76 | 76 | 73 | 74 | 70 | Bernal | 82 | 74 | 80 | 80 | 69 | 69 | Wellens | 82 | 75 | 79 | 80 | 68 | 70 | Padun | 82 | 77 | 72 | 74 | 75 | 70 | Tenorio | 82 | 74 | 75 | 73 | 64 | 66 |
Headlining the list of favourites is 2020 and 2021 race winner Lecuisinier. The other 85 climber is Kudus who was already 4th last year, but is now a top contender for the win post training. After those two you have to talk about Herklotz. He was 2nd last year and he's the best if it comes to a sprint, but this usually plays out more as a race of attrition with winner being the last man standing so to speak. Two other riders that compete for the highest spot are Morton and Phinney. The latter is defending champion and while he has declined he's still among the best.
The next few riders are a tier below, but could on a good day compete for a podium spot. Bernal has the strongest combination of stamina and resistance to go along with his climbing ability. Wellens has very, very similar. Padun is a bit punchier, but lacks the top end energy stats. Due to multiple declines Tenorio is defficient in both aspects, but still an 82 climber.
| MO | HI | ST | RS | AC | DH | Latour | 81 | 75 | 80 | 78 | 74 | 73 | Barguil | 81 | 75 | 77 | 77 | 75 | 76 | Sivakov | 81 | 72 | 79 | 77 | 69 | 74 | Quintana | 81 | 73 | 76 | 75 | 65 | 60 | Pogacar | 80 | 76 | 79 | 80 | 72 | 66 | Meintjes | 80 | 78 | 77 | 76 | 69 | 74 | Warchol | 80 | 74 | 76 | 77 | 70 | 68 | Carapaz | 80 | 71 | 71 | 76 | 65 | 61 |
I feels a bit weird having Latour here, he was 3rd last year! But he's likely to play a more support more role for Bernal. Barguil is a very well rounded climber and good descender as well which should prove useful in a race like this. Sivakov and Quintana are both more diesel climbers which should be perfectly fine in this race. The Colombian though needs to be careful since he's not the most comfortable on the downhills. Pogacar and Meintjes should be the best among the 80 climbers with a chance to break into the top 10. Warchol and Carapaz will aim for a similar result.

Has great fun reporting this race last season, and now it's even more a star show.
Should be a crazy race!

Don’t know what to expect from Carapaz in a race like this. If he has the race of his life he might crack the top 10, but more realistically he’ll finish around 15th. Whether his decent support cast will make a difference or not is the big questionsmark. Also his poor DH might hinder him.
This race is everything that the Giro isn’t. Will be interesting to see. My money is on Herklotz, eventhough I always cheer for Lecuisinier.

Obviously an insanely stacked field, and Quintana can't be expected to compete against much more lively and accomplished climbers in a classic like this. His energy stats are a notch below everyone 80+. But it is still nice to have two GC guys on the roster, so at least these types of clashes don't end up being throwaway race days like they otherwise would.
Top 10 would be amazing but very unlikely, top 20 is sort of the minimum acceptable. Top 15 is probably a reasonable goal. Would also be nice to see Aranburu get a good minor placing here in support, though his stamina will be the biggest issue there.
Thanks for the preview!

Would love to see Wellens battle for a Top 5 here but will settle for 6th-8th too. Not too much support here for him.
Thanks for the preview! Going to be one hell of a race indeed

Would love to see us go crazy banana and put Preidler, van Poucke and Roman in the breakaway here Maybe top 30 is the goal for Preidler? Really have no clue how the AI will play it for us in such a stacked field. |

Top 3 goal here, our first goal race of the season.
A top 5 is an absolute must looking at the startlist and considering the goal bonus.
Obviously I'm hopeful for Herklotz to do better than that just like last year and fulfill the sponsor requirement, it will require an even better day than then though.

Pogi has really been holding his own against some of the strongest climbers. 8th place is a very good result, Borisavljevic must have provided adequate support on this very difficult course.
Impressive ride by Herklotz congrats to Puma and thanks for the report.

No crazy banana behaviour, but it would have been too much, I guess
Three riders top 50 is a nice result, and Preidler just inside the top 20 is well fought.
Herklotz is just amazing, congratulations, cio! Surprised to see Phinney collapse completely, that's rough for MOL. |

18th is dissapointing even if I didn’t expect much. Atleast Soulious did reasonably well to cover a bit of the lost. Not a big pointer though.

Didn't have any expectations here. Good to see that everyone got the points for finishing the race.
Happy new year!

10th is a great result for Meintjes, and Eyob and Ndayisenga in the Top 40 alongside Habimana as the first attacker is a strong team performance. Rather unfortunate that we don't take any points home for it. Congrats cio and thanks for the nice report wj!

Solid but not great. Obviously hoped for a victory here but 3rd against this sort of startlist has to be within expectations somehow. Congrats cio!
