It's time for the hell of the north, and what more is there to be said? Nothing new about the type of race we're likely to see this year, but change is unnecessary when you already have the most feared race on the calendar. Like always, it's a race for the pure cobbles specialists. Strongmen don't have to cope with hills here. They can just test their engines.

Though he may not be the strongest favorite at this point in his career, Sam Bewley has earned the right to be mentioned first. 34 years old, Bewley is the king of Roubaix. From 2013-2018, the Kiwi won 6 straight Roubaix's, becoming the record holder. 4th in 2019 and 2nd last year, he has also finished in the top 5 the last 9 straight years since 2012. However, this will be his first Roubaix with his new team, Mapei. van den Berg will be a strong domestique, but his team is not the strongest overall. Still, that's never been an issue for Sam, and since this may be his last shot for the title, you know he and his team will be gunning for it in full force.
However, the real favorite is probably Wisniowski. He won the 2019 edition, and he is still at the height of his peak. Moreover, he now has a stronger team than ever - and perhaps the strongest team ever. Pedersen has emerged as easily the best second classics man in the peloton. That legitimate double threat is incredibly dangerous and takes a lot of pressure off. Add in domestiques like Ringheim, Kosic, Laporte, and Grieg probably have the best rider and the best team overall. A win is the target.
Our last former winner here is Adam Blythe. Blythe had made it somewhat of a career of performing generally well, bouncing around divisions, but ultimately disappointing in the top races. That changed last year, when he put his name in the history books as a winner here. Not the strongest team, but he's here this year on a wildcard PCT, Eurosport, and he's already won here. He can afford to be aggressive and see what happens.
Someone who really will want to win this year is Danny Summerhill. He's spent the last decade being one of the best pure cobbles specialists around. He's dominated PCT on several occasions, and is always around when he faces the best. Last year, he finally took a monument, winning the Tour of Flanders. But to date, he hasn't won the biggest race that matters. Now 32, the clock is ticking. His team has a lot of depth, so he has the tools to take that victory tomorrow.
Tinkoff come here with their double headed squad of Senechal and Kamyshev. Senechal is one of the strongest cobblers on paper, and is still just 28 thanks to his young emergence. However, to date, he is still waiting for a real breakthrough to put his name among the greats. His lack of versatility has often been the death of him in hilly and sprinter's classics, but Roubaix is always his best suited race. Similar for Kamyshev, who has always been a pure flat cobbles engine, and has finally shown some promising results in the past couple of years. Tinkoff have several other quality domestiques like Sulimov and Zubov too, so maybe they can outlast other teams and use their numbers.
Kasperkiewicz gets a big shot here. The young Pole is very strong on the cobbles, but his sprint is bad enough that it could hold him back even in the velodrome, where energy matters first and foremost. He'll be backed by Ferreira and should last deep into the race, but he'll probably need to attack earlier to have a shot at victory.
This is not really a race that suits Gerts. Despite his cobbles training in recent years, he's still at his core a puncheur/cobbles hybrid, and has a much better shot in the hillier cobbled classics, as he showed with his podium in Flanders last weekend. However, that doesn't mean he's weak here, only that he's not at his best. Gerts can still go toe to toe with the top tier of guys on flat cobbles, though his team won't offer him much help in doing so.
Teunissen finished on the podium here in 2019, and he could easily do that again if he has a good day. Not a ton of support though, which might hold him back in a stacked field.
Contrast him with Van Hooydonck for Aegon. He's only just emerging in the upper echelon, and is a similar rider to Teunnisen, but has a much better team behind him in terms of depth, which could mean he saves more energy early.
Then there's a guy like Theuns, who like Gerts could surprise here, but usually relies more on versatility to get his top results. That was the case last weekend, when he powered to the greatest win of his career thus far, taking De Ronde after attacking in a small group. Without any hills here, he won't be in the top tier of favorites unless it's an unusually easy race that goes to a sprint - which is not impossible, it's happened several times in the last few years. However, even those sprints are usually very messy and more about energy than speed.
All the top cobbles riders in the PT are here, so of course the potential outsiders list can go on and on. However, because this race is flatter and harder than most cobbled classics, the usual candidates for a surprise, like Debesay, Gaday, or Polanc, don't have any substantial edge up over guys like Tiller, Per, and an assortment of big engine types. A lot of secondary guys could end up in the top 10, or even win with a smart move. It will all come down to daily form.
The day is upon us. Who will have soon have a monument added to their palmares?

A win is the target for sure (and a goal as well). Our team should be really good suited to this race, and Wisniowski seems to be back to his best level. A great season so far for him, coming close in both Sanremo and RvV and now I hope it's time to copy his win from 2019 and get another monument win under the belt. Fingers crossed!

Mixed feelings about this one. Wisniowski gave it a huge effort and still had a quite good sprint in the end. Makes me think that he could have won this if had used his energy in another way. At the same time it's great to see him being on the attack and really giving it a go. A huge shame that Pedersen ended up "failing". He's been on the wrong side of these splits a bit too many times during his time with us. Might be that he is given a "worse" position due to Wisniowski being the protected guy near the front, or might just be that he sucks at positioning  Would have loved to have him their in the sprint as he should have had a good chance at a podium.
Congrats to the legend that is Sam Bewley with another monument. And congrats to Heine as well

Interesting to see Benoot going for the breakaway. A quiet day for Gerts, just staying in the favorites group, but I guess sprinting for 5th is quite a good result. Probably his best Paris - Roubaix to date.
Nice to see Bewley taking one last big win in what was probably his last chance to do so. But Theuns making the double would have been just as great

Congrats Heine, it is so nice to see Sam winning it again even in other jersey! Probably the last major win of Bewley's career, but what a win that was.

Bewley proves once and for all why he's the greatest. The king finishes it off one last time.
Huge congrats to Heine and thanks for an amazing report Nemolito!
Side note, the last half decade of Roubaix's now have been predominately group sprints. Wonder why that is, I feel like it's extremely rare when you actually play it in PCM.

Karatzios with his usual 150km to goal attack. I don't really get why he does that every time. I could understand if he tried 50-60km from goal to see if he could upset the chase, but this early will never give a top result.
Kortsidakis though with a very solid 23rd, and Karatzios for once didn't blow up entirely, so he still scored a decent amount of points.
Great win for Bewley!
And Isostar just can't get it wrong this season. Impressive results. I suspect they already have more points than the best normal relegator will have - and the GT's haven't even started. They're going to destroy the previous point scoring record I think

Well, neither of those things worked out. Really tough two races for Tinkoff. But I'll join the praises for Bewley, cool to see the old man do it one last time!

9th by Teunissen is pretty much the result we can expect from him here, so we're satisfied. Can't have an overperformance like in Vlaanderen every race.

Brilliant report Nemo! And actually it's really nice to see Bewley win when he's not top favourite - I guess I'm doing the thing everyone does when they romanticise a dominant athlete and want them to win again, forgetting how much we hated it when they won all the time. Great win for the old dog to add to his palmares, surely given his age it'll be one of his most treasured victories.
Decent showing from us with 22nd from Rowe and a breakaway appearance. Certainly our best monument so far by a long long way!!!

Definitely the race I've enjoyed the most this season. This race had so many intriguing storylines that one could think a writer imagined it instead of a pretty stupid Ai creating it.
- A breakaway large enough to possibly be a danger to position high once the bridging riders arrived
- the two big victims of an early split being
A) The super dom (Pedersen) to arguably the top favourite (Wisniowski)
B) Polanc who's 1b option Neilands ends up one of the surprising contenders in the end
- a super strong top favourite Wisniowski who goes all in too early but still comes close
- the titan duo Wisniowski and Summerhill, later joined by likable underdog Per and defending champion Blythe
- the chaser group rejoining at basically the last moment before the velodrome
- Blythe entering the velodrome first
- Kasperle with a last ditch attack inside the velodrome
- Theuns getting close to a shocker monument double
- the man, the myth, the legend himself: sam bewley wins
I dont think i can remember a race where pcm created such a fitting story line to a big mg race. Felt super satisfying to see Bewley win in this way. Even reminded me to Boonen in the 2015 race where he was close to a last hooray in the velodrome after changing teams during his decline for the first time in ages. Just that Bewley denied him back then. Also jandals words ring quite true to me.
Super happy with Neilands performance here. Probably much cooler than if Polanc would have gotten the same result
