Milano - Sanremo 2021
Ollfardh
No way am I letting a Monument go into other races.

The big favourite has to be Mathieu van der Poel, if he has the self control to wait until the Poggio to attack, there's really no one who can match his acceleration. Other favourites are Alaphillipe and van Aert, but let's be honest, we all want Gilbert to win his 5th Monument here.

Also there hasn't been a women's race since 2005, let's hope they bring it back soon.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Odd RCS is pretty good with women racing usually. Maybe bc of the distance which is the unique character of the race?

I think that on Poggio climb the pace is so high that also MVDP acceleration can't be enough to make a solo move, you need the right circumstances for that, unfortunately for him. The slope is never more than 5% for 500mt, if Alaphilippe and Van Aert are on his wheel, I doubt he can escape.
QS has so many alternatives with Ballerini an Bennett too...

Wind says it's going to be a sprint finish, so my bet is on DQT. I don't think vdP does well enough over that distance to win it, he has to be very lucky. Van Aert is probably lacking the teammates to finish it off.

Will only probably watch the decisive moments of the race, but can’t really predict a scenario. DQT have the strongest team for three possible scenarios, small group, small sprint and mass sprint. However if the conditions are good, VdP will attack somewhere. Underdog bet: Filippo Ganna.

Would love to see the female peloton tackle the Cipress-Poggio part of the course, but zero desire to watch them tackle the 300km.

Plus the Womens World Tour is at the Trofeo Alfredo Binda tomorrow, which is also a great event with strong history. It's happily established as their alternative to MSR on the calendar.

RCS does enough other good events i'm happy to give them a pass on MSR (unlike ASO). But still, the idea of a challenging laps race on that final section is tempting. Slot it into the late summer/early autumn and you'd have one of the best looking races on the calendar.

MVDP living rent free in Van Aert's head.

Massive win from Styuven. Ewan a monster today, shame he didn't win. But he didn't have the team in the end to help him after Ganna blew up Wellens.

Ollfardh
Stuyven showing his brains, perfectly timed attack, waiting for SKA to do some work, and timing his sprint like the best. Ewan incredibly strong, but if you follow like that on the Poggio, there's no way people are going to take you to the finish.

Wout looked to be the strongest, but didn't really attack. Mathieu was there but he never gave the impression he could win. Impressed by Pidcock as well. Alaphilippe not as strong as last year. Also good to see Sagan back on an acceptable level after his illness.

Gilbert no where to be seen in the end, so only 1 chance left for him and it's looking really bad. The Stuyven scenario was probably the only way he could win but he wasn't even there. We'll have to look at other riders for the next 5 monument win.

I'm trying to understand but what was INEOS' plan all along on the Poggio? They had Ganna pull really hard to the point where van Baarle wasn't full up to the task when he started to pull, and besides Pidcock, who had to re-enter in the end of Poggio, they never tried anything.

They didn't have a sprinter and Kwiatkowski didn't even try. Really weird way to race today from them imo, they had two guys in that group and they could've tried something different. I know Pidcock tried, but it wasn't enough.

I think Ganna was supposed to pace for a Kwiat attack, but he really wasn't up for it. Probably should've let Ganna ride his own race there.

Agree that is was weird tactics by Ineos. It seemed like that were trying to prevent attacks and save a sprint, but that did not fit their personnel.

Perfectly timed and strategized by Stuyven. SKA might have been the one who really won him this race by bridging up and giving him a second of reprieve.

I was very impressed with Ewan, but it was select enough over the top that nobody was going to organize for a sprint with him there, and he had no team to help him. If Lotto had a puncheur to make that final selection, Ewan probably wins this race.

SKA donated this one to Stuyven, he should've went over the top as soon as he reached him.

They had Wellens, but Ganna blew him up on Poggio. He was there to help clearly, but he didn't have the legs after Ganna went up a pace.

@Ollfardh: yeah, I agree. Ganna seemed quite strong in all honesty, and probably could've been some help in that later stage of the race after the attacks.

Superb finale as always.

Pleasing surprise to see Stuyven take his monument. Looks like it's going to be a better year for Trek

YES! Jasper!!!!
when I saw him within the best group I was hoping for a Cancellara...and it was the case. well done!
Anyway SKA played a big role in this, probably thinking Stuyven was done, in the way he closed the gap..
VDP looked the most tired of favourites, Ewan the strongest.
It would have been curious to see if Ganna could make a move like Stuyven, playing his own role. I guess he had it in the tank.

Chapeau to Stuyven, the win he needed for his career! Smile
