Veenendaal - Veenendaal Preview
It's the 10th edition and also the 10 year anniversary - there was no edition of this race in 2013 - of Veenendaal- Veenendaal, formerly called Dutch Food Valley classic, and the organizers have pulled out all the stops to ensure we have a good race on our hands. The profile is the same as last season, covering 200 kilometers of near flat roads accentuated with bumps almost all the way through.
Last year's winner Luke Rowe is back to defend his crown; actually the last four winners - Hermans, Cavendish, Lo Cicero - are all on the startlist, and will hope to become the first two time winner of this race.
| FLA | HIL | STA | RES | SPR | ACC | Ewan | 75 | 71 | 73 | 71 | 83 | 81 | Kump | 74 | 77 | 76 | 73 | 81 | 80 | Swift | 73 | 67 | 72 | 69 | 83 | 81 | Guarnieri | 75 | 65 | 76 | 75 | 81 | 80 | Bonifazio | 79 | 66 | 68 | 75 | 80 | 80 | Kristoff | 74 | 67 | 73 | 69 | 82 | 77 | Lo Cicero | 72 | 64 | 71 | 63 | 84 | 78 | Kemboi | 78 | 63 | 74 | 77 | 80 | 80 | Guerao | 74 | 65 | 71 | 64 | 83 | 76 | Zabel | 74 | 69 | 74 | 70 | 81 | 79 | Silvestre | 78 | 67 | 70 | 71 | 80 | 81 | Vesely | 73 | 68 | 74 | 68 | 81 | 80 | Rowe | 78 | 66 | 76 | 70 | 79 | 80 | Keukeleire | 72 | 70 | 73 | 68 | 80 | 79 | Boeckmans | 72 | 67 | 73 | 70 | 80 | 82 |
Talking about the favourites though, Ewan should start as the top favourite. His top speed is stupendous, while his abilities on the tough course should keep him fresh till the end.
With his ability to traverse bumps, and strong support stats, Kump is expected to be the closest competitor to the Podium Ambition leader. Kump has done well so far, without being spectacular and he'll want to keep that run going, or even do better.
Another fast man, with somewhat weaker support stats is Ben Swift, who should be a strong podium contender for this race. He has had a hit-and-miss season so far, and will hope that this race can set the foundation for a better series of results going ahead.
Guarnieri has continued his excellent vein of form, heading back to the past three seasons, with a great start to this one. He'll want to that run going, and has all the components needed to make another attempt at a classic victory in this race.
Bonifazio's excellent flat stat compliments his speed well in this race, and could prove to be his super-power at the business end of this race. Kemboi is almost in the same image as Bonifazio, with certain support stats favouring one rider over the other.
Kristoff and Lo Cicero are both fast finishers, but lack a certain killer-impact with their support stats for a race like this. Guerao can be said to be similar as well, with his speed offset by weaker support stats.
Rowe is quite some way down the favourites' list, but as he himself will agree, he isn't the fastest in the race, but he is a strong rider when it comes to taking advantage of these kinds of profiles. He'll be looking towards repeating last year's result, and guile more than guts is likely to take him there.
Zabel, Silvestre and Vesely are three more riders who'll be looking to perform above expectations and push for a Top 5 finish. While Silvestre is a little slower than the other two, his skills of flat roads are among the best in the whole race.
Keukeliere is the second Podium Ambition rider in the list, but he'll probably be more interested in delivering team leader Ewan to a good position for the sprint. Boeckmans on the other hand will be looking for a repeat of his podium in the opening race of the year - Down Under Classic.
| FLA | HIL | STA | RES | SPR | ACC | Ciolek | 73 | 64 | 70 | 66 | 81 | 76 | Avelino | 70 | 63 | 69 | 65 | 82 | 77 | Yates | 74 | 79 | 77 | 70 | 77 | 80 | Cavendish | 71 | 63 | 71 | 68 | 81 | 78 | Guardini | 72 | 64 | 74 | 69 | 80 | 82 | Kupfernagel | 74 | 64 | 73 | 66 | 80 | 80 | Itami | 75 | 61 | 71 | 67 | 80 | 82 | Matthews | 76 | 65 | 72 | 67 | 79 | 79 | Ackermann | 72 | 77 | 75 | 71 | 77 | 80 |
A few interesting names on this list, including former winner Cavendish, who has definitely felt the growing years on his legs. Ciolek and Avelino are in the same boat, with their advancing years meaning their best years are probably behind them.
A couple of interesting names make the outsiders list, those of Yates and Ackermann. Neither are the fastest, but both are good punchers as well and those skills can give them an advantage in a race like this.
Itami will be once again hoping to prove the bookmakers wrong and pull off a repeat of his 2nd place in the Down Under Classic.
Guardini and Kupfernagel are good sprinters in their own right but perhaps lack the skills to shine in a race and a strong field like this. Matthews is perhaps the weakest rider to have made the list and will probably only be working to help Itami's cause in this race.

Thinking of a K to win here, either Kump, Kemboi or Kristoff. Ciolek is definitely going to win the sprint to the last 800m as usual.
Thanks for another race Abi!

I'll pretend this race is actually in Veenendaal and not Fourmies but renamed to Veenendaal. Either way I can't say that I'll be watching the riders along the road because a) Covid and b) I'm in Lisbon in this alternate universe.
If Vesely wins this race, I will actually crash the site with bananas. We've never been close in my home race mostly because we never had a serious sprinter, but for the first time ever I actually have hope in a good result here.

Love this - will never forget your very accurate description of Avellino sprinting backwards and now you have given me another sprinter put down for the vocabulary.

Bonifazio getting better lately, I think this race might decide his future on the team.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Haha brilliant, love you Luke! Played to perfection, worried a little bit after he got caught by the other two that they'd slow up and be caught by the pack but they did enough to stay away and despite flashbacks to when Houle failed to convert in Frankfurt or whenever it was last year he did what he really did have to do and took the win. Thanks for the report Abhi, love it!

Almost forgot I sent Vanbilsen here as a backup, which was the way to go apparently. Bonifazio doing ok as a secondary scorer, but Im kinda overpaying him for that role.
Thanks for the excellent report and congratulations to Xero!

The result doesn't really matter at this point anymore.
Thanks for the report and congrats to Rowe on another win.

Can't be unhappy wih a 4th place, but obviously disappointing that Varga dropped off the winning move.
The flat squad i assembled has been profiting a lot this year, specially given nobody wanted them, got most of them for 50-60k in FA. Such a shame i didn't pick some C1 flat classics to maybe score more this way. Definitely more productive that fu...ing Vanmarcke

Van den Berg isn't ever going to finish top 5 in a cobbled classic, so that result is likely to be the highlight of his career
Good result for us overall, with Kemboi and Kamberaj bringing useful depth points. Now over to Lisbon to see if the other half of our sprint duo/assembled talents combination can continue our push for 30 PPRD. Thanks for the report! |

Thanks AbhishekLFC for the report, congrats Jandal. Now excuse me while I yell at my riders for being incompetent and having no idea how much this race means to me.

I won't deny that was an exciting race!
And if we're going to relegate we are going to relegate as f*cking hard as we can!
Y'all better prepare for me to suggest dozens of female riders to add to the game for my CT team
