Roma Maxima
It's the most wonderful time of the year - my mandatory C1 cobbled race to remind me why I normally avoid cobbles! This time around I was lured under false pretences, after only seeing the first half of the profile, which looked like a fun summit finish. It'll be a test of how well the division's top cobblers can climb, and don't be surprised to see the mountain stat come into play considering the length of the climb and the likely slow pace going up it.
That is unless the stronger puncheurs in the field had the same reaction I did when seeing the second half of the profile: fear and confusion. For what seemed like a nice Italian hill classic goes all cobbled in the second half of the race, culminating with a slightly uphill finish on the pavé. Never has the old maxim "a race of two halves" been more apt than to describe the parcours of the Roma Maxima - maxim, Maxima, get it?
Unsurprisingly all of the PCT and CT big names are here: Summerhill, Altur and Trentin perhaps the big favourites, both strong on the cobbles and relatively useful on the hills. Yet if the hills don't have too much of an impact, expect to see Zepuntke, Vanbilsen, Daniel and Vanmarcke going well. Oh and Vanspeybrouck is here as well, because the only greater challenge than using all the racedays allocated to one top cobbler, is using all the racedays allocated to two - Andorra's management are definitely braver (and possibly wiser) than I.
| FL | HIL | STA | RES | COB | SP | Summerhill | 78 | 73 | 76 | 72 | 83 | 70 | Altur | 75 | 70 | 75 | 70 | 82 | 72 | Trentin | 74 | 74 | 76 | 71 | 81 | 75 | Vanspeybrouck | 75 | 70 | 77 | 70 | 81 | 66 | Zepuntke | 72 | 69 | 79 | 72 | 81 | 72 | Vanbilsen | 78 | 69 | 80 | 74 | 80 | 72 | Daniel | 73 | 69 | 76 | 76 | 80 | 76 | Vanmarcke | 76 | 66 | 77 | 72 | 80 | 70 | Baugnies | 77 | 71 | 79 | 72 | 79 | 64 | Machado | 69 | 63 | 72 | 67 | 79 | 62 | Breen | 77 | 70 | 72 | 72 | 78 | 73 | Bush | 74 | 63 | 75 | 73 | 78 | 71 | Van Keirsbulck | 72 | 71 | 75 | 73 | 78 | 70 | Van Avermaet | 74 | 72 | 72 | 69 | 78 | 74 | Moulingui | 74 | 71 | 71 | 71 | 78 | 65 | Taillefour | 77 | 57 | 70 | 70 | 78 | 54 |
There are also those riders in the field who don't make the top tier of cobblers, but who are strong enough puncheurs to fancy their chances if they can make the race difficult for those names listed above. Sinkeldam, Benoot and Schoonbroodt are the main trio to watch from this group.
| FL | HIL | STA | RES | COB | SP | Sinkeldam | 74 | 75 | 74 | 70 | 77 | 68 | Benoot | 71 | 78 | 75 | 74 | 76 | 69 | Naesen | 75 | 72 | 77 | 73 | 76 | 77 | Van der Haar | 77 | 72 | 70 | 72 | 75 | 72 | Schoonbroodt | 72 | 75 | 75 | 73 | 74 | 68 | De Vreese | 74 | 72 | 72 | 70 | 74 | 70 | Marcos | 74 | 73 | 71 | 65 | 74 | 65 | Bovenhuis | 73 | 71 | 74 | 70 | 74 | 62 | Verhelst | 71 | 73 | 72 | 69 | 74 | 62 |
Finally, there are the sprinters who didn't fancy a trip to Barbados and instead have come here to try and benefit from a bit of luck. Looking at the profile I wouldn't fancy their chances, but then my understanding of how cobbles work is similar to my understanding of most things - I'm aware of them, but I can't claim to know them well. So watch out for Saber, Havik and Van Lerberghe in particular, all of who are pretty strong cobblers in their own right.
| FL | HIL | STA | RES | COB | SP | Van Lerberghe | 74 | 66 | 75 | 74 | 77 | 75 | Saber | 75 | 68 | 74 | 72 | 76 | 81 | Havik | 73 | 64 | 74 | 68 | 76 | 79 | Matthews | 72 | 66 | 70 | 67 | 75 | 76 | Van Asbroeck | 75 | 71 | 75 | 72 | 74 | 80 | Edmondson | 73 | 64 | 72 | 71 | 74 | 77 |

GVA could be good over the hill, let's hope he holds his own on the cobbles. Anybody but Andorra winning would be an upset.

Idk, based on Altoro's performances so far we'll be just about in the Top10 after a poor performance.

Damn, that's a strong field. I clearly missed that there's no clash with De Panne anymore!
Will be very difficult to do anything in this field. We have to hope the climbing has a significant impact, more than usual.

A strong field as expected, plus the fact that once again it is Bovenhuis who is rated higher than Van Lerberghe, similar to Viana, and we know how that played out. Hoping for a better performance here, as historically the hills haven't really played too much part in deciding the race in recent years.

If we don't get a result here then we can pretty much hold our hands up and say we made a massive mistake applying for the cobbled races.
Thanks for the preview jph

Not expecting to beat Andorra ofc, but would be nice if Trentin continue getting better results and end up with a 2nd here

Well, that is one strong startlist. Top-10 should be doable for Baugnies, and maybe Coronel has another wonderful day as well to grab a point or two. Thank you for the preview!

Yikes, that's going to be rough for Naesen and Schoonbroodt, although I don't know what I expected. A Top 15 would be great, I'd also take two in the Top 25.

Yes! Another very important win, so happy to see Summerhill waisting 0 points, taking it all as every single one will count in the end of the season, with Vanspeybrouck with another good performance.

Andorra get the win they need. Very weird race by Trentin there!

19th and 28th is not what we hoped for, but considering the field, it's not a massive underperformance. Would have hoped that Naesen was the better of the two though. Oh well. Congrats YJ and thanks for the report!

16th shows how little Benoot can do when the hill doesn't face a challenge for the other riders. Come again, cant get a podium every race

84th from Sinkeldamn. Guess I can only laugh and assume he punctured somewhere? Or he simply checked out of the race even worse than Trentin, and unlike Trentin just gave up. Either way, that's the second time in as many cobbled races he's inexplicably had that kind of luck. Completely empty race for us.
Congrats to Andorra and thanks for the report.

Well we tried, albeit with a different combination Probably hurt the others more than it hurt us as Van Lerberghe got a better result than the Philips past and present trio who tried. We came looking for a Top 20, so 21st is about par for the course. Would've hoped to have got some more depth points but it's ok.
Still hate how badly the game is treating Saber this season!
Congrats on yet another win on the cobbles to YJ! Thanks for the report jph

Hmm, Baugnies should have done a bit better, I guess the race wasn´t selective/hard enough. It was very nice to see youngster Ulloa in the break though. Thank you for the report jph
