A thread to discuss the elite-only Imola World Championships that start today with the women’s ITT.
Perhaps the only guy interested in this is ManxMissile but I’m also willing to see if Chloe Dygert is able to defend her title from last year or if the Dutch can regain their throne. She hasn’t raced much this year (professionally, at least) so it should be interesting to see at what level she will appear - and if van der Breggen can start her road to the double glory. |

*raises hand* I'm also very excited to see Dygert-Owen's form coming from practically no racing, although it would've been even more interesting to see her take on AVV as the gold standard of European racing.
On that note, it would be the comeback of the year if the latter can still overcome a broken wrist on Saturday.
And personally as a German, Liane Lippert has been developing even more on the steep stuff this year and could surprise with a Top 5 if she has the legs again to follow the likes of Cille and Niewiadoma like she did in the Giro.
So all in all, I'm just saying this could be a great time to get into women's cycling.

I'm just so proud that some other people are talking about Women's cycling! This means i can continue to annoy you all by bringing it up whenever i see someone complaining about the mens races
Hard to look past VDB for the ITT today, although never overlook the Americans who always go really well in this event (we've seen Dygert-Owen do it before!) And watch out for Cordon-Ragot of France who looks in good shape post-lockdown.
Special shoutout to Amber Joseph representing Barbados (i'll be sneaking her into the MG next season .
The RR should be great! The Danish come with strenght in Ludwig + Diderikesen, they will be in the attacks at the sharp end guaranteed.
Lippert's breakout year was derailed by lockdown, Cio is right to watch out for her but i'm not sure she has the team to do it. She'll need Brennauer on a her best day to stay in the fight.
Lizzie Deignan is back this year, and her GB team is solid enough. Her best two Giro results, were on the two days most similar to Imola. Plus victory in Plouay and La Course in the last month, she is arguably the form rider coming into this.
Longo-Borghini on home soil, has to be a contender. Very strong team around her, all seem in good shape too. Anything less than a podium is a bad result for her and the Azzuri.
The Dutch, what do i need to say? VDB is their big threat, but Vos is in form and she always go better the bigger the race is.
Newiadoma will be soloing it for Poland. Always forget she is only 25 and this year feels like her best chance yet.
The Americans have not raced really. Riveira was at the Giro and had a couple of good results. If she can hang onto the best her sprint could deliver a surprise.
Moolman also suits the course. Sierra could be a surprise. It's a deep field and will be aggressive racing like always.

Well deserved win for van der Breggen, finaly!
No expectations for the Belgian women in Imola, best they can do is make some good pasta for Wout
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Of course van der Breggen rode a meritorious time trial but it is quite ironic that in a week’s time her biggest opponents crash out. Hope Dygert’s injuries are not too serious, though. |

Unfortunately, there's a photo out there that might point to the contrary. A severe flesh wound on her knee, or rather where her knee used to be.
Think WVA, but possibly even worse because of the tendons involved. All very much speculation based on just one angle though, of course.

After what he did in the Tirreno ITT, Ganna looked like the clear favourite due to the short length of this route. Still impecable to stop mighty WVA! |

This makes you wonder how close van Aert could've gotten with a specific preparation instead of riding le Tour with almost every day a hard ride. The RR should suit him, but what's left in the tank?
Ganna clearly the best, probably the best result Ineos will have this season.

Didn't know this Ganna guy before between all those youngsters, but he is certainly one to look out for. Any idea if he will become a Tony Martin, Cancellara or Wiggins?

Ganna’s been focusing a lot on track racing as well, so I’d say he could become sort of a Wiggins since he looks also versatile in climbing and in punchy/northern classics terrain.
Women’s race today! Warrior Van Vleuten at the start, let’s see how she performs today... think the Netherlands will look to protect van der Breggen from the start and AVV will be racing as a wildcard depending on how she feels. A lot to bargain for the Dutch team. Still, I want an outsider to win: Lippert, Ludwig Uttrup or Longo Borghini today. |

Yes i have been glued to the edge of my seat with Tayler Wiles driving the breakaway
Obviously doomed at this point, but it's some good tense racing so far. 50km to go and things are warming up nicely!

So no surprise today, van der Breggen in an old-fashioned win and the first double since Jeannie Longo in 1995. Van Vleuten 2nd and Vos 4th, can’t really see anyone capable of stopping the Dutch at this moment. |
