It's that time of the year when the riders line up to decide who is the best in the World in various disciplines. This year's edition brings the riders to Vitosha in Bulgaria, where the riders will tackle a rather daunting cobbled mountain course. The course will throw a very different kind of challenge to what riders can normally expect of a mountain course, and that in itself is a major novelty factor for this year's edition.
Marko Kump and Tejay Van Garderen are the former winners present again who wish to become a two time World Champion. Neither rider is likely to be a top contender for this year's edition. With the unknown nature of the course, it is quite difficult to put a finger on how the race will pan out. However, the riders with the best chance of success look to be either strong climbers who can handle cobbles well or Northern Classics specialists who can climb effectively. Konig, Faiers, Kwiatkowski, Kozhatayev, Kruijswijk, Benoot, Nelson Oliveira, Polanc, Wisniowski, Ringheim, David Per, Theuns, Debesay, Okbamariam, Kasperkiewicz, Summerhill and home favourite Grashev are some of the riders that could be leading contenders for this year's edition.
The Elite Road Race is not the only event on show. We start off with the B Worlds, wherein one team will earn the right to join the Elite Road Road. It is being billed as a Pluchkin versus the rest battle, but can someone step up and spoil the party? Two U23 events, the ITT and the Road Race, give a platform to the youngsters to showcase their skills without the presence of the big boys. Who will get their careers off to a glorious start? The TTT and the ITT will showcase the best team and the best individual, respectively, against the clock. Russia and Jerome Coppel are the defending champions respectively, but it looks likely to be a tough task for former to retain their title while the latter is absent in this year's edition. Who will ride to make a name for themselves and their team?

Can I ask why Sajnok/Poland wasn't selected for the U23 TT? He's not going to win, but he is quite better then some other teams' riders (Belgium or denmark are the first few I checked).
Other than that, I don't think I've ever had that much starters, hoping for a breakaway!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

This will be a very different WC, but hopefully a fun one! Must say I'm most curious about the TTT.
Really wonder how first the big climb, then the flat cobble sections will affect the race and maybe swing it back and forth among the teams fighting for the medals. Was only involved in picking the Norwegian team, and must say I hoped for a very different team compared to what is sent here, as I strongly suspect there are far too many pure TTers there. Now that the profile is known, I think it's safe to say a team heavily focused on MO stat should be favoured. Having said that, who knows how big impact the cobbles will have! |

My prediction: Gold to Pluchkin in the B Race, A race and ITT.
The TTT should be fun!

Poland didn't have a separate team as they have 4 riders and only those countries with at least 5 riders got their own teams for this year's U23s. He fell into the (Rest of) Europe category, so to say, from where only 6 riders could get in out of 60.

Never thought I'd see a day where Kozhatayev is listed as a favourite for a rainbow jersey, but here we are. I'm ready for some pure craziness.

Obviously hoping for a big MO impact. Pluchkin could well be the favourite to take 3 titles, and also Padun could do a very decent job in the U23 race if MO outweighs CB.
Will be very interesting to follow all this

I have decent hopes for Dunne in the B race with 74MO 70COB, surely one of the better hybrid riders in that startlist.
Hadi in there could only surprise if it's MO dominant.
In the TTT, with Herklotz, Sütterlin and Politt we are responsible for Germany's success and I hope it's a good roster lineup, although we might lack the climbing strength.
The U23 TT can be won by Ganna on a great day, although Wirtgen will be hard to beat, and Powless/Gidich should be slight favorites for the other podium spots.
I'm happy to see Stork in there for Germany too.
Herklotz in the TT could give us a first indication how the RR will turn out, I'm glad he made the selection and maybe he can surprise there already.
All four of our U23 riders made the RR selection, with Madouas, Steimle, Stork and Ganna. No major expectations for any of them, but I'm happy they're considered the best of their generation and I hope they'll gain valuable experience on the big stage here.
And finally, the elite road race. Herklotz could become world champion.
Or he could be nowhere, who knows yet with that monster of a route.

Ah, so same rules for RR and TT? A bit disappoitning, as there are quite a few countries in there now without a TT'er. But U23 is only for the lols I guess, so jut carry on.

Okay so I need your honest opinion on this, everyone. I just finished reporting the B road race and I'm at 85 screenshots. Is that too much for your enjoyment? I could cut a few of the earlier scenes that turn out to be more or less nonconsequential without too much of an effort, if enough of you would prefer that.
The route obviously lends itself to a lot of things happening from early on and I wanted to give a good impression on how the A race could develop, which is how I ended up here, but I think the report is still decently paced (I even skipped a few laps ) and if most of you enjoy taking some (more) time with it, I'll gladly deliver. But I would like some feedback on this ^^

From a reading perspective: absolutely! From a reporter perspective: if the race requires that many pictures I expect the best race ever
Don't know how Uran will handle the cobbles, and all my cobblestone specialists haven't been selected, so go Uran!

You say that and I know a lot of you enjoy these longer reports, but I could see the argument that at some point, it's too much time to invest and that people would prefer not having to skip too much in order to keep it feasible for them. It doesn't look like it for now, but I'll wait a bit. At least I can say that I don't foresee me topping this one anytime soon, length-wise. It does get a bit exhausting after a few hours

I enjoy reading the long reports. They're not always necessary if it's too much of a timesink though. But if you already wrote it, no need to cut anything imo.

@Cunego - Agree with others, if you have the time and patience to do it I have no objections as a reader.
Looking forward to the U23 road race myself with the US team being 6 McCormick riders plus Barta and Powless. Hope those two can carry us.
