Criterium du Dauphine Libere

PT: 16/6 - 23/6, 8 stages with a total of 993,6 km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/profiles/pt_dau.jpg

Welcome to the 13th edition of Criterium du Dauphine Libere, continuously on the MG calendar since 2007.

Dauphiné is dolphin in French and the term dates back to Count Guigues IV of Albon (c.1095–1142) who had a dolphin on his coat of Arms, and was the reason for the historic name of the former Dauphiné province in southeastern France, the province existed up to the French Revolution in the late 1700’s.

Back to cycling, the race was created in 1947 by Grenoble-based newspaper Le Dauphiné libéré, the race has traditionally been a preparation for the Tour de France. As mentioned, it came under the MG umbral in 2007 and quite surprisingly have had several winners taking the title more that once, latest winner Taylor Phinney triple champion victorious in 2013, 2016 and 2018. Also Rein Taaramäe double winner 2014, 2015, same goes for Simon Spilak winning in 2011 and 2012 and Thomas Dekker 2007, 2017.
2017 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Dekker the only rider of those who will take part this time, now 35 years old Thomas Dekker although still a solid climber unlikely to win this edition as he will be acting as support rider for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Peter Velits.

GC riders:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Angel Madrazo latest appearance was one day race GP Liechtenstein 17/4 while other top GC riders was still fighting in Italy. Rein Taaramäe took the win and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Angel Madrazo had to settle with 5th, something Gazelle management could not be entirely satisfied with.
28th of February pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Angel Madrazo took part in another one day race Pro Hallstatt Classic, a more semi-mountain type profile than Liechtenstein, he came 2nd behind Spilak, a fine result I’d say on a profile like that.
We have to go back to late January to find his only stage race result of the season, a two days race, again 2nd. Being one of the top climbers / GC riders overall the fact that he has not won a race yet is somehow beyond par.
Now regardless of previous result pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo is the outright favorite to win Criterium du Dauphine. His mix of climbing, ITT great team support should make him very hard to beat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Silvio Herklotz latest appearance was in the Giro, finishing 2nd behind Simon Spilak. In one-day race Pro Hallstatt Classic 3rd behind Simon Spilak and Angel Madrazo, and in his first appearance of the season Tirreno – Adriatico he won the race in front of Simon Spilak. All in all, a great season for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Silvio Herklotz and he will also be considered first rival to the title in this race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Lachlan Morton latest appearance was in one-day race GP Liechtenstein, coming 3rd behind Rein Taaramäe and Aleksandr Pluchkin by that beating Angel Madrazo with almost a minute. In his previous appearance Pro Hallstatt Classic 5th losing time to both Madrazo and Herklotz.
In Tirreno – Adriatico pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Lachlan Morton finished 6th and Badaling International saw him finishing 12th both early races with result to forget for a top climber like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Lachlan Morton

Despite mixed result pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Lachlan Morton is a clear podium contender, his strongest access compared to other top ten riders are a strong team, his weakness can be the ITT where he is amongst the weakest in my predicted top 5.

Beneath the three mentioned podium candidates there is a bit of distance down to the next group, but strange things happen and we must not be too surprised if one of either pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Robert Gesink or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Romain Sicard should end of on the podium, either because they have fantastic form in this race or one of the top favorites do not.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Robert Gesink took the last podium in the Giro, enough evidence in itself that he should not be underestimated, winning Vuelta al País Vasco another brilliant result this season. 8th in Tirreno – Adriatico less impressive. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink is the best tempo rider amongst the favorites and it very hard to say how much that can help him at Mont Ventoux, maybe just enough to climb into a podium spot?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Romain Sicard latest appearances have been one-day race GP Liechtenstein coming 7th, one-day race Pro Hallstatt Classic 6th and his best result of the season winning Paris – Nice in front of Simone Ponzi back in February.

Beneath those top 5 riders we got a larger group of rider all fighting for the best possible result somewhere in top ten but unlike to find a spot on the podium.

A decent result for Stake Laengen would be great, but low expectations for us here. Should be an interesting fight for the win.

All in for Velits here. Top10 must be the goal with a TTT setup around him and Dekker as support in the mountains.

Thomas Dekker 2007, 2017.

2017 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Dekker the only rider of those who will take part this time, now 35 years old Thomas Dekker although still a solid climber unlikely to win this edition

First line alone is pretty awesome winning with 10 years in between. 2017 actually was past his prime already after coming back to the PT from the CT even!

And iirc he was far from being a top favourite there, so why not make it 3 this season? Pfft

Great preview. Looking forward to this and in especially how my team screws up the TTT as everytime as they somehow not made for those it seems.

tsmoha
Podium must be the goal for Morton, anything less than a Top-5 would be terrible. Built a team, that is balanced for the TTT, so except of two pure TT guys some mediocre TT riders, who should prevent Morton from being dropped or stuff like that.

Thanks for the nice preview. Just give me a good race, as I need Morton to make up for Bobridge's deficits this year.

In theory this should be the perfect start list for Van Stayen and i sure as hell would be excited about it in pcm15. But in this pcm the odds of capturing yellow early and multiple stage wins look much thinner :/

PT wildcard outing here for ISA - Hexacta that fits beautifully into a gap in our race programme that enables some of our best riders to participate. No fear for the PT teams though. The TTT doesn't suit us at all, and even so, our leader Berhane is a ways behind the top contenders in the GC race on other terrains as well. Still interested to see how he does on GC - achieving a top 10 as was delivered at P-N in 2018 seems out of reach, maybe around 15th is a more realistic goal assuming the TTT is not a complete disaster. Main focus though will be stage hunting, and hopefully we have brought along the right rider ingredients to get our sponsors a lot of tv time! Smile

If you have a crap TTT setup, go all in to finish dead last Pfft

I hope the TTT will give my riders (Bongiorno especially) room to attack.

Andreas Stauff as my lead sprinter will be interesting to follow looking at the sprint-train discussion. With Barbier and Daniel it's a different approach than the one I go for with Coquard. Maybe that's a good test really. Both Stauff and Petit seems to be pretty consistent performers according to their stats - but neither have gotten a leadout yet. I think.

The very last hurrah for Herklotz this season, and a promising startlist to give us some hope of a Tirreno repeat!

Surely this gives us no excuses to miss the podium, and we should even have a shot at the GC win if Madrazo can be contained like we've seen happen before. It's gonna be fun!

With the TTT looking to be the first stage producing serious time gaps, I'm happy to see we appear to have the best setup of the 84+ climbers for it, but it's also going to be important to keep Gesink from creating a significant gap that could be decisive in combination with a potential yellow jersey.

The first serious test on stage 5 could be very juicy for Herklotz with his excellent descending skills, if he can create any sort of gap over the top on a good day, there's a lot of time to be gained there.

Stage 6 needs to be full gas too if the GC is close after that and Gesink possibly still in the lead, as the mountain TT can go either way as the Giro showed and we can't afford to allow a third competitor into the GC fight besides Madrazo and Morton.

The penultimate stage will probably be ridden harder than the profile suggests and will require a great day by Herklotz again as well as a good chase by the team, if we can get rid of Van Stayen and catch the break, it's a great win opportunity.

And then, well, Ventoux is Ventoux.

White for Herklotz has to be a given in his very last eligible race. Kudus shouldn't be allowed to get close.

Not having Spilak or similarly strong sprinters among the GC favorites could give Herklotz a chance to contest for green as well like he did in the Giro, but obviously he'd need to do very well on the first three mass start stages that all look ideal for MVS.
Top 10s in each of them could open up an opportunity though if the mountain stages don't go to the breakaways and if stage 7 is ridden hard.

We bring a mainly TTT focused team here that can still support Herklotz well, but Sütterlin and Politt are definitely here for one day and one day only.
Vasyliv comes from a pretty good Vuelta and has experience as a Herklotz domestique, and the same goes for Stüssi who had a quiet time in Spain but had other great races for us this season.
Hadi and Bevin will provide the base support in the mountains, and Cavagna is our guy for the flat and slightly hilly stages that can protect Herklotz in the final there.

Overall, that's 8 of our 10 best TTers in this race, with three riders worse than Herklotz but still plenty good enough to not slow the train down.

Massive preview!

We've brought Galta, and thus, a top 10 must be the goal pre-race. He should at least have a shot, seeing there's only three 83+ MO riders, or eight 82+ MO riders. Though, I suspect we'll need the GC favourites to stay quiet on the hilly stuff!

Other than Galta, I'm hoping for some kind of breakaway presence. Our team here isn't strong enough to get up the road on the difficult mountain stages, I think, but it would be cool to see us try on the other stages.

Bikex
Bouhanni might get some decent results with this startlist, other than that I have to count on breakaways and maybe Gidich getting some points via the U25 rankings.

Thanks for the great preview Tamijo!

Congrats on the win, knockout! Could very well be multiple stage wins now Wink

Considering the effort put into Stauff performing here we can't be content with 7th. He was in a perfect position despite the train not being strong enough. He left it too soon as was punished within the last 50 meters or so.

We tried fielding a train, but it wasn't strong enough. We never really believed it would be, but clues from tests suggested that it might. Anyway, we'll pick up whatever small hints we get during the season to hopefully piece something together.
