A race traditionally dominated by the guys who enjoy riding against the clock, the Time-Trialists. It should be no different this year, and defending champion Jerome Coppel is back to defend his crown albeit with a different team. Three stages on offer for the sprinters, but it is perhaps the punchers who are the only ones likely to challenge the dominance of the TT specialists, if they can make a hard race of it on Stage 4.
| Name | HIL | TT | STA | RES | REC | ACC | | Coppel | 76 | 83 | 78 | 78 | 74 | 74 | | Fiedler | 68 | 83 | 75 | 76 | 78 | 63 | | Paillot | 71 | 80 | 75 | 74 | 68 | 64 | | Yatsevich | 68 | 80 | 76 | 81 | 67 | 63 | | Fraile | 72 | 79 | 74 | 76 | 72 | 66 | | Howson | 65 | 80 | 73 | 74 | 72 | 68 | | Oliveira | 73 | 78 | 75 | 75 | 71 | 71 | | Malori | 68 | 79 | 74 | 73 | 72 | 68 | | Vorobev | 65 | 79 | 73 | 71 | 67 | 72 | | Goncalves | 71 | 78 | 76 | 72 | 74 | 65 | | Dal Col | 64 | 79 | 70 | 72 | 68 | 70 | | Trofimov | 81 | 75 | 77 | 75 | 75 | 73 | | Campenaerts | 69 | 78 | 71 | 73 | 72 | 65 | | Lammertink | 68 | 78 | 69 | 74 | 69 | 68 | | Atkins | 68 | 78 | 74 | 75 | 72 | 63 | | Vangstad | 70 | 77 | 74 | 75 | 74 | 68 | | Rosskopf | 75 | 76 | 73 | 71 | 70 | 70 | | Haugard | 60 | 79 | 74 | 77 | 70 | 67 | | Hofer | 65 | 78 | 74 | 72 | 68 | 68 | | Bazhkou | 75 | 76 | 73 | 75 | 71 | 64 |
As already mentioned, Jerome Coppel returns to defend his crown and starts top favourite for this race. Fiedler is his closest rival in the TT, but the latter needs to be very careful not to lose time in the hilly stage 4.
A bit of a gap to the next contenders in terms of TT ability! Paillot's combination of TT and hills gives him the edge over Yatsevich and Howson, in the battle for the podium, but Fraile and maybe Oliveira are more than capable of making a run for the podium as well.
Tinkoff, on paper should have a big presence in the Top 10, with Malori, Dal Col and Vorobev all genuine contenders.
Trofimov is the best puncher among the Top 10 contenders overall, and his teammate Goncalves could also make an appearance in the high positions.
Beyond that, it is too close to call between the rest of the contenders, and anyone on a good (or bad) day could defy expectations.
| Name | HIL | TT | STA | RES | REC | ACC | | Turek | 68 | 77 | 72 | 73 | 71 | 68 | | Li | 61 | 78 | 73 | 68 | 71 | 75 | | Novak | 73 | 76 | 75 | 73 | 75 | 65 | | Danacik | 71 | 76 | 75 | 72 | 74 | 71 | | Schär | 69 | 76 | 74 | 76 | 74 | 69 | | Vandousselaere | 69 | 76 | 72 | 72 | 71 | 71 | | Ramos Ticona | 74 | 75 | 71 | 71 | 67 | 69 | | Andersen | 64 | 77 | 73 | 74 | 67 | 65 | | De Luna | 71 | 75 | 67 | 72 | 70 | 68 | | Verona | 62 | 77 | 72 | 75 | 67 | 63 |
More of the same with the outsiders, as the best of the best time trialists have decided to turn up in this race to try their luck.
| Name | TT | | Coppel | 83 | | Fiedler | 83 | | Paillot | 80 | | Yatsevich | 80 | | Howson | 80 | | Fraile | 79 | | Malori | 79 | | Vorobev | 79 | | Dal Col | 79 | | Haugard | 79 | | Oliveira | 78 | | Goncalves | 78 | | Campenaerts | 78 | | Atkins | 78 | | Lammertink | 78 | | Hofer | 78 | | Li | 78 |
More of the same names in the above list as the list of favourites, which isn't a huge surprise. Tinkoff once again dominating the Top 10 favourites' positions.
| Name | HIL | ACC | | Hagen | 85 | 79 | | Trofimov | 81 | 73 | | Anuar Aziz | 81 | 71 | | Boswell | 80 | 76 | | Vakoc | 80 | 74 | | Waeytens | 80 | 73 | | Dowsett | 80 | 71 | | Pichon | 79 | 76 | | Prevar | 79 | 73 | | Chaves | 79 | 72 | | Reichenbach | 79 | 69 | | Barbin | 78 | 76 | | Quevedo | 78 | 75 | | Roux | 78 | 75 | | Buchmann | 78 | 71 | | Chernetskiy | 78 | 71 |
Hagen is head and shoulders above any of the other punchers present in this race. His team will be hoping to make Stage 4 hard enough to allow their leader to claw back any time he loses in the TT.
Trofimov features high on this list. He will be hoping to stay in touch in the ITT and take advantage on this stage.
Quite a few PCT teams have brought strong punchers to try their luck on this stage.
| Name | SPR | ACC | | Ahlstrand | 83 | 82 | | Grosu | 83 | 80 | | Vanderbiest | 82 | 77 | | Vesely | 81 | 80 | | Appollonio | 81 | 78 | | Roelandts | 80 | 79 | | Castañeda | 80 | 79 | | Lavoine | 80 | 78 | | Granjel Cabrera | 80 | 77 | | Houle | 79 | 78 | | Gaviria | 79 | 82 | | Bertilsson | 79 | 77 | | Docker | 79 | 77 | | Reinhardt | 79 | 84 | | Porsev | 79 | 80 | | Croket | 79 | 71 | | Bennett | 79 | 79 | | Manarelli | 79 | 79 |
Jonas Ahlstrand won the first stage of this race last year and he's back to try do the same or even better this time.
Giving close competition to Ahlstrand should be Grosu and Vanderbiest, who'll be hoping to get among the winners in at least one of the three flat rated stages.
Vesely is no slouch, while the likes of Roelandts, Appolonio, Castenada and Granjel Cabrera are always prone to an over-performance. Should be some interesting sprints!

Some leftovers here, with the stronger time trialists and sprinter in Olympia Tour. Quevedo is not strong enough, Manarelli is probably not strong enough. Hopefully Selander will win the KoM again like last year.

Nice preview! I'm hoping for a top-10 from either Trofimov or Goncalves, and I think the field is just weak enough to allow that. Hopefully Reinhardt will participate in the sprints as well.

Brought someone for every terrain, but no one for the GC. Oh well. Here's hoping Grosu can deliver a stage win.
Happy new year, guys!

I guess this is the portion of the season where we're in races I forgot we were in and have no chance of scoring in. Or maybe there are just more of those type of races than I would have liked.
Appo's our only shot here, unless we get in a crazy break. Hopefully he's competing in the sprints and survives until the end of the race. That's all I can reasonably ask for in a PTHC field in this type of race.

Any points is good points. Can't expect much going in, so we'll take whatever happens.

Not a bad sprint from Appo. He was well placed and had speed; it was just too strong of a field. It's disappointing too because it seemed like he was making a run on the outside, but the finish came too soon. Oh well. 4th is good at this level.
Very happy to see Ostergaard in the break as well. He's always been a fighter, and I love to see him doing that at the PT level!

On a stage where we expected to get nothing, Jernej Svab comes through with a brilliant ride in the breakaway. Great job by the youngster.

Sorry been quite busy lately so I have a lot at reading to do mostly seconds part of Vuelta.
But atleast here we had a nice start with Ahlstrand delivering as planned |

I wouldn't say we have brought here a really strong team, but Novak has one of his few chances to lead the team this season, in a race that if pans out like in 2017, could see him in the GC Top10. Only sent Roelandts here with the hope that he can get us some results in the sprints.
First stage and Roelandts already with a big second place. At some point thought he could overtake Ahlstrand, but obviously he's not that fast. Feels weird to get good results in sprints given our team "philosophy"

Not too happy with the way Vanderbiest performed on stage 1, that said, the main thing is seeing if Coppel can get another GC victory here. hopefully EBH doesnt gain too much time on him in the hill stage.
Also happy to see svab's performance |

Good result for Roelandts. 5th is decent considering he got a 2nd yesterday. I like to see that Novak is finishing high in the bunch, usually a sign of good form and that he'll perform well in the important stages

Great to see Ahlstrand doing well
Really hope Fielder can take the win now on stage 3, he has been well placed til now so I can always hope. Then just need to be lucky on stage 4 and not loose too much time.

Very limited expectations for GC here from WCC in a field with a very strong PT presence combined with a crucial ITT being a key GC decider. Hence quite pleased to see JAC giving a good account of himself in the opening sprint stages. 8th on stage 1 is perhaps around par for him in this company, but backing up with a podium (3rd) on stage 2 puts a smile on managements face .
Thanks to Abhi for these reports and to the wider (small) band of reporters keeping MG moving forward.

Two good sprints but it's a shame not to see Grosu win. I wonder if would have done better with his own sprint train. One more chance here and then plenty of opportunities at the TdF.

I've decided to be perfectly happy with another 4th place result, so I am. That's good for Appo at this level, and I can't get greedy. he did everything right. Solid sprint; we'll take the points.
