The revenge of Flanders. That's what the newspapers in Belgium say about tomorrow's race and what Sam Bewley could do to avenge his loss to Greg van Avermaet in Oudenaarde a couple of days ago. Usually this race would be the prelude to Tour of Flanders, but this year they swapped.
In 2017 they race got promoted from the PCT division at HC level to the new category PTHC, where it remains this season. No other than Sam Bewley got the win last year, in front of Greg van Avermaet and Danny Summerhill. The latter won't be present, but surely we'll have a good field that will challenge the top duo for the win in this race.
Favourites | COB | HILL | ACC | SPR | STA | Contenders | COB | HILL | ACC | SPR | STA | Bewley | 83 | 71 | 83 | 83 | 78 | Ringheim | 78 | 67 | 75 | 73 | 75 | Van Avermaet | 81 | 75 | 77 | 77 | 77 | Tsatevich | 75 | 77 | 75 | 75 | 74 | Trentin | 81 | 74 | 76 | 75 | 76 | Burghardt | 80 | 68 | 69 | 65 | 74 | Wisniowski | 80 | 71 | 76 | 73 | 75 | Kuroeda | 75 | 70 | 73 | 76 | 76 | Vanbilsen | 80 | 69 | 71 | 72 | 80 | Potts | 76 | 74 | 71 | 68 | 74 | Baugnies | 80 | 72 | 73 | 65 | 80 | Gaday | 76 | 74 | 73 | 71 | 74 | Theuns | 78 | 74 | 76 | 77 | 76 | Lagab | 76 | 71 | 74 | 72 | 72 | Altur | 81 | 70 | 68 | 72 | 75 | Spengler | 80 | 63 | 70 | 59 | 70 | Thomas | 79 | 60 | 78 | 74 | 75 | Matthews | 75 | 66 | 76 | 76 | 70 | Saber | 76 | 68 | 79 | 81 | 74 | Kuroeda | 75 | 62 | 78 | 72 | 70 | Teunissen | 81 | 66 | 69 | 67 | 77 | Kurth | 75 | 64 | 73 | 73 | 74 | Polanc | 78 | 73 | 75 | 67 | 78 | Bakari | 82 | 55 | 60 | 61 | 59 |
Obviously, the main favourite for the win in Zottegem is the reigning champion, Sam Bewley. Despite missing out on the win in Flanders, he's already won this season Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Strada Appia Antica
Greg van Avermaet comes from winning an incredible edition of Ronde van Vlaanderen, so without pressure he comes here with his season (and probably his whole career) justified by that win.
Matteo Trentin has the perfect skills for this race, though coming from a disappointing Flanders, we don't know what to expect from him here. Maybe a podium, maybe not even a Top10.
Then we have a trio of great cobblers that are powerhorses in the flat and know how to sprint, though not at the level of the trio already mentioned. Baugnies is having a great season in PCT, with a couple of good wins, same as Vanbilsen, while Wisniowski is struggling to adapt to the PT life, after a succesfull season in PCT in 2017.
Altur, Burghardt, Teunissen or Spengler are some of the pure cobbler that haven't been mentioned yet, but it's hard to see them fighting for the big places.
Then we have a couple of very interesting riders in case the race turns out not to be selective. Theuns and Saber are the hopes of two of the top PCT teams, and while Theuns comes with a perfect stat combo for the race, Saber could struggle a bit in the cobbles before using his superior sprint skills. We can't forget either about Tsatevich. If the hills turns out to be important, he'll be in for a big result.
Another rider with a good sprint skill is Thomas, but he'll suffer in the hills and might not contend for a big result here
Other riders like Polanc, Potts, Gaday or the Kuroeda brothers could fight for Top10 places, but hard to see anyone of these group with the best riders in the finish line

Anything better than 0 points would be good. Maybe Varsham can show himself

Given the season Thomas has had so far i'm hoping for another surprise and good result. the 1-2 work of him and Marcus has delivered fairly consistently so we'll hold on hope. A top10 would be great! Two in the top10 would be unbelievable.
Although the win is definitely impossible

Need a top result from Wisniowski here after a couple of disappointing races. Plenty of the big guns not here, so a top 5 should be realistic.

Oh, we're racing this? I forgot.
Hoping for a nice result by Gaday then. |

Vanbilsen needs to rebound after two bad races, one of the last chances of the cobbled season so I'm kinda hoping for something here.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Really hoping Baugnies puts together another solid race in this one - one of our goal races and we really need some cash for next year
Poland is in a recession and Kulczyk is looking at our Belgian stud to come up big for the team - and bit of income redistribution if you will.
Hard to look past Bewley and Van Avermaet here, but perhaps Trentin will have something for the big dogs.

With this startlist a top 5 is very possible for Teunissen. Hope he can continue his great form here.

Strange to see E3 as a bridge between RVV and Roubaix and not a prelude! Very much looking forward to it given the narratives so far through the season. Obviously Bewley has just been taken down a peg by GVA and that'll be entertaining (or boring if it's a big Bewley revenge ), Wisni + Vanbilsen suffered punctures when they looked strong last race, Trentin was unusually bad and Teunissen was unusually good.
Then also a strong strong field of PCT cobblers, who have already raced against each other a lot! Hope Baugnies, GVA, Saber, Polanc and Wisni can have a good race, but that sounds impossible!

Bit surprised seeing Saber so high up the contenders list. If he achieves that position I'd be very happy!
Thanks for the preview Aquarius

Hopefully Trentin uses this opportunity to show that his De Ronde was just a bad day. Seeing the startlist, I definitely hope for a podium here, and at least a top 5. Fingers crossed he will race aggressive if the race is opened early between the favourites, and not sit back and wait for the sprint for low top 10 placings or so.
Bewley surely the favourite, eventhough GVA's monument win surely makes him and Roman slightly nervous for this race too
Thank you for the preview, Aquarius97, looking forward to the report! |

We got a Top10, that's great! And Thomas only just outside does show the two-leader model continues to work. Plus slipping Matthews and Grashev into the Top25, making 4 in that area! We're not going to do much better than that in PTHC level and i leave E3 feeling very satisfied all things considered

Very good allround performance from Wisniowski. This is the level I expected from him before the season, so hopefully he'll continue like this in the next races.
Decent from Ringheim also.
Bewley making sure he didn't fail like in the De Ronde. A little revenge at least for Roman, congrats!

Solid performance by Baugnies but got a shit ton of time in the end. He probably sat up his legs once he knew victory was gone. Just shows that Baugnies only races to win. Killer mentality.

Congrats to Roman and thank you for the report Aquarius. Spengler has been very disappointing this year. Granted he still isn't maxed, but his performances in the classics have been very disappointing so far.

Happy with Trentin's riding there! He seemed to be strong as well, always being close to Bewley when the Kiwi decided to push the pace. Third place is good, and hopefully he beats GVA in the upcoming monument to get one back after that photo finish
Congratulations on the win, Roman, seems like everything is back to normal! Also thank you for the report, Aquarius. |

Can't be too happy with Vanbilsen there, caught napping and lost all chances of a win early on. Some good news is the minor placings from my other cobblers.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

In the next episode of the Man Game: The revenge is real.
Perfect race from Bewley, totally dominating with the help of my team, only to bad some of my rider could not pick up some decent points other than for participation. But all in all a perfect race - a win.
GVA continues with his strong season with another fine result surely giving Evonik what they hoped for, while Trentin is back with well needed result for Aker. Also nice to see Podium Ambition and Lierse to have a decent race against PT competition, always nice to see PCT teams doing well.
Big thanks for the report and those kind congrats.
