Colombian Venteaux
This mountain classic goes into it's third edition - with the previous two years held as a PCT event. Tiago Machado (2016) and Benat Intxausti (2015) as the former race winners, we will surely get a new name on the honour roll this year.
The profile is easily described: a short classic with just 137km in total, the climb up the "Paramo Frontino" is the definite highlight. No real difficulties prior to the finish climb, that comes with a flat sector halfway through the ascent. It's time for the mountain goats to shine!
The Startlist
The Contenders Favorites | MO | AC | | | Outsiders | MO | AC | Suaza | 80 | 79 | | | Moschella | 79 | 62 | Eastman | 80 | 69 | | | Anacona | 79 | 61 | Krasnoperov | 80 | 61 | | | Manfredi | 78 | 73 | Penasa | 79 | 76 | | | Atapuma | 78 | 73 | Valls | 79 | 72 | | | Medvedev | 78 | 72 | Cataldo | 78 | 73 | | | Diaz | 78 | 68 | Bennett | 78 | 73 | | | Stetina | 78 | 65 | Panayotov | 78 | 72 | | | Bardet | 77 | 75 | Campero | 78 | 71 | | | Antón | 77 | 74 | Rujano | 78 | 70 | | | Tvetcov | 77 | 73 | Karnulin | 78 | 70 | | | Pozzovivo | 77 | 69 |
The elite CT climbers lined up to fight for this prestigious classic: Suaza as the top-favorite. The local hero has a very special race here and given his combination of climbing skills and a super strong acceleration, anything but a victory might already be a disappointing result. There wouldn't be anything better than kicking off the last month of the season with a big victory on home soil, would it?
Despite his season being rather disappointing, Eastman has to be considered a favorite as well - obviously. But of course there's Valls and Penasa as the other two big podium contenders here. The race should suit Penasa slightly better, as a strong kick may be more valuable than in all those stage races, that Valls dominated this year. Of course, though, the CT's best climber this year will also aim for a victory here in Colombia, where he finished 12th in a stacked field of premium PCT climbers last season.
Krasnoperov lacks the acceleration, but Reddit's trio with him and Anacona/Manfredi proved to be of danger in a few mountain outings this year. His lacking allround talent won't hurt him too much, so if he sticks with the crucial moves, he can be a real threat for at least the podium.
The same goes for guys like Cataldo (10th in 2015), Bennett, Panayotov, Campero, Rujano (10th in 2016, 2nd in 2015) or Karnulin. They will probably fight for the Top-5 here, but of course a podium could be possible on a very good day. Rujano with quite a good history in this race, so the aging veteran should know the dynamics of the crucial climb here.
Minor threats for a possible Top-5/10 result could be Moschella (who doesn't enjoy a succesful season so far), Diaz, Bardet, Tvetcov or Pozzovivo. Some strong domestiques like Anacona/Manfredi, Atapuma, Medvedev or Stetina could potentially finish inside the Top-15/20 as well.

Will we score well here? I have no idea.
Will Rujano live up to the expectations due to his broad experience? I don't think so.
Why didn't I bring Solis to this race? I have no clue.
Will we be part of an unsuccessful BOTD? Obvious.

Not too hopeful here. A top 10 would be good but a top 15 looks more likely with Bardet in this field. Battaglin hasn't shown much to get my hopes up about him.

We need a big result here really, who knows whether or not we'll get it but every point counts. Hope for some proper depth scoring too since it's just a one-day race, but one of them getting dropped for a shot at the podium is okay too.
Suaza-Valls-Penasa (not a set order) then a big mountain sprint for the rest seems the likely outcome really.

Would be fine with a top 10, to make the last goal.

We really need a win here if we want to have any chances of promotion, but i'll be happy with a podium which would almost secure the Individual Ranking

Ahh, our usual "just throw in 3 decent riders and at least one will perform"-mountain race. I love those. Betting on Anacona this time in his home race. As for the race win, Suaza all the way!
Thanks for the preview, mister CT. |

Throwaway race for us. Hopefully hardy decided to pull some crazy stuff and take a top 10 or something.
Realistically probably expecting a win penasa or someone of that ilk. Going to be an exciting race though |

We'll be happy to avoid a 0 pointer here.
I'm hoping to see Suaza take it but as it has so often been this year in the mountains whoever can best Valls will take it.

oh the joys of C2HC. This is gonna be a 0 pointer for sure everything else would be a minor miracle. Honestly just hoping to see some great racing and good AI.

AAAAARGH everybody we needed to not lose points to, we lost points to. That sucked - gonna need a big surprise in the flat double header or Kigali to make up for that. Nice to see Schleck in the break, and thanks for the great report tsmoha.

Wait what?!
I was begging for Anacona and Krasnoperov to slowly close the gap until a wild Manfredi appeared. Suaza winning and Rujano third (grats!) making this feel like an incredible victory for us.
124 points if calculated correctly. We're close enough to Xero, Philips and Azteca to pass any of them and we only need to pass one to promote
Thanks for the early report tsmoha. Now go check your bank account |

And there goes any hopes of overtaking any team in October... Reddit will finish in Top5, i say it right now
About Valls... every single time this season that you have attacked from long distance it has ended bad. Why do you keep trying that way??? At least 4th give us 37 points that forces Roux to win Zuri to be able to win the Individual Ranking
Thanks for the reports tsmoha!

You take 82 points from this race. I think you looked at C2HC GC points, instead of C2HC one-day race point

Oh wow Rujano! I have to say deep down I hoped for a good result due to his past results here, looks like a good race for him, but 3rd is way above my expectations and actualy gives us hopes for that elusive 16th place
We did go onto an unsuccessful break as I predicted and nice to see Vila in there once again, he's really a keeper.
Thanks tsmoha for the great report, having my riders there only made it better and gratz Sutty that win was long overdue
