Cycling is changing

Hello
Cycling is changing, in fact some countries, such as Colombia, Australia, United States of America and Great Britain are entering forcefully on the world stage would it not be appropriate to put in more UCI races in these countries?
What do you all think?

Not really no, cycling is a minority sport in these countries in that they're popular when there are famous riders that win races etc but when these riders don't win or they have a generation that is not that great then the sport becomes a minority event again. How many Americans outside of cycling know who Van Garderen, Horner or Talansky are? People in the UK know who Froome is because he's won the Tour twice and Cavendish because he's a famous sprinter and of course Wiggins but apart from that they probably couldn't tell you about any other cyclists and only know these cyclists from the news rather than watching races. They also probably could only name one race in the Tour de France as well.

Whereas the cycling heartland of France, Belgium, Spain and Italy are the cultural hotbeads of cycling and should remain as its centre, even when these countries don't have great cyclists its people still have a passion for the sport.

Also I wouldn't lump Colombia with the other countries as it has a long and proud cycling tradition that goes right back to the 1980s.

Colombia is one of 2 nations where cycling is a top 2 sport. There is much tradition there and many races aswel.

The most famous in Europe are Vuelta a Colombia and Clasico RCN. But also many others like Vuelta Gran Santander or Vuelta a Antiquoia. These races are not UCI races but that is on purpose so the organisers are free to organise teams and they don't have to listen to UCI. For example UCI has forbidden the use of the Puerto de Letras in the Vuelta a Colombia (which is the only UCI race in Colombia)

There is also the problem of logistics as well, cyclists are not footballers that can travel around the world and play a match for 90 mins and then jet off to another country, the season needs to be centred in one place and that is Europe.

Also its tradition that makes races great, just think how old races like Paris-Roubaix and Liege-Bastogne-Liege are and how certain races like the Tour of Flanders are linked with the local community, there's no way that races in the USA, UK and Australia would create the same passion.

There's nothing wrong with new countries coming into the sport and giving it new riders, teams, races and most importantly new money. Go all the way back through the history of the sport and these new entires have very very rarely been detrimental. To be honest, they are not even new!

Take Britain. Team Sky an Wiggins-mania is driving a new surge of interest but so Boardman and Obree, and Millar and Roche, and Simpson, and Robinson and his fellow pioneers. It ebbs and flows but the UK has a long and succesful relationship with cycling.

The USA is more modern but it's been groing since Lemond, not solely was it the work of Armstrong.

Australia has been working on it for decades and has had it's past pioneers that drove interest going way back to the 60's.

And Colombia is not a new country. Colombians have been around for at least half a century at the top level and the country has some great old races and heritage in the sport.

If we're talking new world we are talking Africa (but not Northern, old French places) and Asia (again, not old French places). And it's only good for the sport to get more people and areas involved. Diversity and a growing market has never been a bad thing and never will be for any sport.

Just about cycling in Australia, it's definetly growing and Australia has a pretty good history starting in 1928 (In 1928 4 'Australasian (3 Aussies and. a New Zealander)' cyclists raced the tour, they failed to get 6 French riders to join them, 15 of the 22 stages were team time trials and They had 4 riders against other 10 man teams, but Hubert Opperman finished 8th in the overall classifcation) and the oldest classic Melbourne - Warnambool is in Australia, yet the distance from Europe has stopped it ever becoming really big. Still now a large portion of people only know Cadel Evans and Lamce Armstrong.

Which races would you like to see removed from the UCI calendar to create more races for the countries mentioned? None of those countries are new to the cycling scene anyway.Columbia is reamerging after a down period but are hardly a new force, they don't have the money required to put on big UCI races and the races they have don't really fit into the current calendar. Australia have had cyclists competing at a high level for long enough and have the TDU, Cadel Evans race and the Sun Tour so that enough as you can only race in that late January/Febuary timeframe on the UCI, plus the domestic scene is struggling to keep races going due to lack of funds so anymore high level races will only have a negative impact on that. The U.S cycling scene seem happy with the UCI races they have as they get WT teams competing and more importantly can still invite a good collection of the local squads which is important to keep sponsorship flowing in the local scene. Maybe Great Britain could have another race but again to many high level races can shift funding from the local races which from afar seem to be doing quite well. If cycling needs to push into anyplace it's Africa and parts of Asia

I do agree, but we shouldn't forget, Asia is very well represented in Track Cycling, so its more road cycling as opposed to cycling in general.

The US is a very large and diverse country, so casting a net over the entire nation with an opinion is always dangerous. Cycling is popular in the western states where outdoor activities are popular, but not as much in the northeast. Notice the crowds who show up for the Miller and the Amgen (and how Jens Voight has become a minor celebrity). The southern states with their nice climates and more gentle Appalachian mountains are fast catching on to the sport.

Some new laws have been passed meaning local governments can only get Federal money to support road construction if they include bicycle lanes, and that has dramatically increased bicycle riding. Cities are building trails (Rails to Trails) and bicycle shops are popping up all over, and I think we're on the verge of a large growth in popularity. More professional races won't be far behind, but who governs them is open for debate.

It used to be part of the Vuelta a Colombia. It was last used in 2007 I think. The stage was 120 km long and the riders did almost 5 hours to complete it. Santi Botero won that stage. Look at the gaps:

We really don't need another Tour De Beijing added to the WT calendar. If cycling is popular, let it grow and promote races when they deserve it. Tour of California could be WT for the USA, but they don't want it. Tour Down Under is WT, but just has a horrible spot on the calendar. If you move it to a better place, it would be a better race. In GB, Tour of Britain might be WT, but it also needs to be moved out of the WC week. And even then, it will most likely be one of the lamest WT races to watch. I have my doubts on Colombia having the budget of organising a big race.
