Best climber last 20 years.
Forza-Diavolo
Can you make a list of the 20 best climber for the past 20 years?

Yes, you can.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

20 best climbers is a lot. In the top 10 should be Pantani, Schleck, Heras, Ullrich, Sastre, Armstrong, Contador, Basso maybe as well. Not in this order ofc.

Even though he's quite young, shouldn't Quintana be up there? Or do you think he needs to prove himself more?

Completely forgot about him Grin I was looking mostly at past results and skipped Quintana. Maybe also Piti in his strongest years can be put there. Also Mayo and Beloki.

Raises an interesting idea for something PCM (story? database?), where the very best riders (either overall or past 20 years) are sorted into 22 teams (national based or made to be equal ability) to race a GT. It would be an interesting type of comparison, you could sort each team to have 9 of the top 198 riders, based on who is (in dailys opinion?), the top climbers, sprinter, roleurs, etc. Would be interesting to be able to compare all these riders, especially on equal teams.

Although having an agreeable list of riders in the race or agreeable stats would be a challenge.

Not an easy question. Mainly because there isn't something like a definition for a climber. And offcourse the whole doping show.
Still, in my opinion i guess doping alone doesn't make you win a Tdf. A certain amount of talent is needed. So you'll need to include Armstrong, Pantani, ...

Mainly i agree with names listed above although based on talent i would say Valverde also. But maybe he isn't considered a pure climber.

Samuel Sanchez is definately woth a mention.

A few years ago i had the impression Igor Anton was one of the more pure clmbers out there.
Mosquera also?

That's the problem it's impossible to know...by all accounts Armstrong had limited talent at the top level until it all changed - recreational drug, different people different effect. Performance enhancing drug, different people different effect.

For example if you have a naturally low hemocrit then EPO is going to do way more for you than someone with a naturally high level. It becomes as much a physiological lottery as anything else with super responders or even other basic factors like financial clout, willingness to risk your health in the pursuit of victory (syrup like blood requiring a 3 am wake/exercise to maintain circulation - no problem!) and is anything but a level playing field.

So I'm sticking with Moncoutie and his 14th fastest Ventoux (see my post above with Inrng link too btw think 1999 was a Dauphine TT won by no other than Johnathan Vaughters) Smile https://www.climbi...es-on.html

p.s. I'm not saying all the dopers don't have any talent but where they would've ranked is impossible to know.

p.p.s granted you can simply disregard dopage too Grin

You could stick with Moncoutié as a statement. But even though they got caught i think riders like Pantani, Valverde and Ullrich, Basso... Were more talented then Moncoutié.
We'll never know, that's for sure.
In that case it's quite a stupid question to ask for the best climber since 1995, since you can only hope to find something clean post 2006/2007.
Cycling lists are more fun when you disregard dope i guess. Smile

PS; Makes me wonder about a new avatar Rolling Eyes First time on Pcm.Daily since 2012, feels good to be back.

Fair enough Smile

This was a day when Vaughters put Vino in his place and Moncoutie was 7th in the Ventoux TT at the Dauphine:

How things have changed? Grin

Also what an interesting last line from that linked report:

"The ITT showed how good the riders of today are in comparison with the champions of yesteryear. On the same parcours in 1958 during the Tour de France, Luxembourg's Charly Gaul came first with a time of 1.02.09. That would have given him 28th place today. But the bikes are a significant improvement these days."

They were pretty good back in 1958 all considered!

I'm not ignoring anything and I know he was doped as hell but would still put him way before all cyclists. He was perhaps one of the most talented guys on earth. And I'd definitely put him in front of guys like Lance, Ulle, Schleck, Alberto, Froome, Heras, Mayo, Sastre, Quintana, etc.

Forza-Diavolo
Can see there is someone who believes Heras was better climb than Armstrong.
how can it be?
