Aru will never have a chance to take 2 minutes of Contador alone...Astana should now send Landa/Cataldo on the attack on every penultimate climb to send Aru on Contadors backwheel

Looking back at my posts vs the general opininon in here after the TDF2013. 80% or more concluded Contador out, that he was not even able to get podiums in Tour for the next year to come. I was one of phew disregarding this, and argumenting for Contador to win several GT's. Glad i was right, for here cones the point. Being af fan of him throughout all the years, i have to say he is the past 26 years greatest rider. He always attacks no matter what kind of terrain and have always done so.
Hes legacy will evidently be as one the all time greatest. None of the big GC riders in the 90's (yes im that old ) and up until 2007, had this kind of constance attacking mentality in them. Except pantani.
Im thankful for being able to follow Contador his entire Carreer. And more riders will evolve into this, because GTs is 100 times more entertaining overall than in the 90s and early 00's.
Looking forward to today, race is Practically over though, Contador will hunt a stage for glory and then save himself for the Tour. I would say it is a great achievemnt if he wins the Giro and podiums the Tour. I dont think he would beat froome and quintana with the Giro in the legs. But a podium would still be regards as a huge achievement  ! |

Hoping that Astana and possibly Sky (?) will mix it up a little on Passo Daone since its clearly the toughest climb today and Madonna di Campiglio isnt that hard since it got that flat part a few kms from the top.
Ybodonk: I agree, allthough I only started watching cycling some 10 years ago. Contador is a true champion. But he tried this in 2011 when he arguably was in his prime and it didnt work out - maybe with some experience and a better team it will be easier, but I doubt he will win - podium, as you say, would be fine after him winning the Giro. But I hope he wont think that way and just go for it. |

Contador is in really good position now. Now he only has to follow Aru like he did with Froome last year at Vuelta.
And Landa and Cataldo are a bit back. Even if they attack someone like Uran, Vanden Broeck, Amador even Konig will have to chase down rather than Contador. |

First day in the mountains! Yay! (but only day in the Dolomites  )
Shame that the top step on the podium is pretty much decided, barring mishaps, before we go into the mountains, but the fights for the other GC positions should be interesting, and if the first two weeks (incidentally, wouldn't it make more sense to start the Third Week Thread at the beginning of the third week of racing rather than judging it numerically, ie after 14 stages) are anything to go by, we could have some unpredictability on our hands.
Today's stage could potentially be quite interesting; although I don't really see any of the GC favourites attacking on the Daone its inclusion is certainly welcome (definitely the hardest climb we will have seen in this Giro so far) and this is one of the stages Astana need to swarm if they have any chance of toppling Contador. Ideally they would set a really high tempo on the Daone with Tiralongo, Kangert etc and then send one of Landa or Cataldo up the road to see if this causes chaos. Astana should realise that the smaller they get the peloton the better, as judging by the past mountains they will have 3 or 4 guys left when Contador only has Kreuziger and Uran has no one.
The climb to Madonna di Campiglio itself is pretty meh, (although stunning scenery as always in the Dolomites) only included because of the Pantani connections imo. Small point of interest: in 1999 they finished in the town/resort itself (labelled at 1514m in the profile) whereas here they climb for a further 2km, including the steepest section of the climb, although I reckon the false flat beforehand will deter anyone from making an 'attack' before the little bit at 12%, so it might be a wait until the last 2k job. However, Contador and Astana are in the race so anything is possible!

I wish to remind you of the 0,0000000-0-0-08% moment. He has won sicnificantly less since then..

I agree with you Riis that he was in prime. However the two major factors in 2011, was A) that he already was aware of the positive clen test, he had that mental burden on his shoulders. B) since Contador and Bjarne didnt know whether they was going to be excluded or not, they made all his preparations towards peaking in the Giro, and then
rushed into the the Tour. If you remember they didnt know if he could start or not.
This year mentaly his prepared for this, he hadnt had many Racing days and he has calculated both his Giro and Tour form. So i believe he can podium in the Tour, but not win |

Peloton strung out already so much as we approach the foot of the Daone - could be carnage here if Tinkoff keep up the high pace. Break definitely not gonna survive.
