The third UCI World Tour stage of the year takes place in Italy with the seven stage Tirreno - Adriactico. The riders will encounter a team time trail, a flat stage, three 'hilly' stages and one mountain stage, which will finish in Terminillo, and one individual time trial to wrap up the tour
The previous edition was won by an impressive Contador who won by two minutes to his nearest competitor Nairo Quintana. Contador's team mate Roman Kreuziger rounded off the podium in third place.

Typical race of two seas, though it seems they havn't included some crazy-ass wall climb.
Line-Up is a who is who of GC racing. With exception of Valv, the currently biggest names are here. Win will be either Contador or Froome though, there are just way above the rest, in general and based on their performance in Andalucia. Nairito with his recent crash probably not in shape to win against those two. Wonder if Nibali has picked up some shape by now or if he will continue his recent peak-schedule of sucking most of the season like last year. Purito hm, hm... another guy where I wonder about his shape for this year, I hope he can throw in some nice punches (hehe).
Sprints will also be a goodie, Cav vs Kittel. Also Sagan, and stage race showing of new impressive MTN sprint-lineup incl. Ciolek, Farrar, Goss and sorta EBH I guess?

...and in the end Sbaragli is being their best sprinter.
(Actually I think Farrar is going to lead them here, had good form in the recent classics)
One rider, that might be able to move onto the podium is Pozzovivo if he has a decent form.
Also Mollema, Arredondo, Uran and depending on form Gesink and Meintjes could do well here.
Definitely the bigger startlist in comparison to Paris Nice. But actually all but Valverde seem to be in one of those two.
Team Sky basically with their Tour de France line up. Add Thomas and Porte instead of Puccio that is. Probably Sky mountain trains again.
Nice preview jihardy. |

I'd actually see that happening.
Ciolek won San Remo, he's not leading out. Bos is the fastest on paper, he's not leading out. Farrar is in shape, he's not leading out. Hagen is the most talented of them all, he's not leading out. And Sbaragli made his point in Kuurne last week..
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I might seem controversial and a fanboy, but I still say Quintana is the best climber in the world when in top shape. Obviously tho, he isnt at this point and Froome and Contador seems to have a higher level throughout the year, so yeah. They are definetely the favourites.
I dont believe in Rodriguez . The ITT means that he has to pound them on the climbs which he definetely wont do. Nibali seems to be Nibali 2014-spring edition, so I wont count on him either. |

Nah... EBH can't win on flat, and neither can Ciolek, so the train will probably be EBH, Ciolek and Bos with Farrar and Sbragli left to fend on scraps.

Ciolek is an impressive leadout though. He would just need to sprint like he usually does. His speed is really good but he starts from 200m out. So if he just goes like that with a team mate behind him, this could be a real weapon. |

Quintana, Nibali and Contador have not a chance - at all! Unless Froome crashes his preparation or race...

Last time Froome raced up Terminillo it was in the 2010 Giro d'Italia, and he did 4.58 W/kg. I wonder if he can produce anything similar this time?

Agree on all points
Will be interesting to see what happens in the Froome vs Contador duel, I'm actually backing Contador, Froome will probably win on the mountain stage but Contador will gain time on the TTT, potentially the ITT (not sure though, depends what sort of Froome turns up there), and the 4th stage looks a potential banana-skin for Froome - an excellently designed stage that doesn't really suit him.
And I hope Nairito's crash in the Colombian Nats hasn't hindered his preparation too much, although I feel he is not at the level of the other two. Nevertheless a podium finish is well on the cards.

No GC riders are in top shape yet, and I havn't ever seen Contador vs Quintana when both were at their undoubtley best. (Different to Froome vs Quintana, although you could even argue about that week 2/3 thingy). Looking back at Tirreno(!!), Catalunya and especially Vuelta last year though, for me Contador is superior in every way. Legs, smarts, willpower. Of course I might just be a fanboy myself in this case.
Yeah, I don't think either that Purito will do much for the GC here but mostly I'm just interested how he will do in early spring, and on the tough stages. I didn't have many doubts in previous seasons about his form but old guys like him tend to have a hard time to come back once they lost their top, top quality, which I think Purito did last season. I'd be happy if he's just somewhat in contention, I'd rate that as a good sign already. Maybe I'm just worried for nothing though.

Pure climbing ability, I still say Quintana is the best climber in the world. They were pretty equal in Catalunya and Contador destroyed everyone in T-A, but let me remind you that that particular race was the first in Quintanas (apart from San Luis, bot that doesnt really count..) preparations for the Giro compared to Contador who peaked (or at least was close to 100%) spring-TdF compared to Quintana's Giro-Vuelta. And I wouldnt judge the power between the two of them based on the Vuelta - Quintana lost a litlle time on the climb (3-4 km?) that Valverde won and followed Contador on the more regular climb a few days after along with Purito before crashing in the red jersey. Quintana was the only climber in 2013 who could stand his ground and actually challenge Froome on every mountain stage: the two he lost time on, he went relatively far out and the ones he didnt, he was the strongest (along with 2013-Purito to some extent - those days are sadly over, I reckon..) And yeah, I know I shouldnt judge Contador on that Tour, but just to put Quintana in perspective against the animal that was Chris Froome who more or less dominated everything that whole year.
But I say we can sit here and and throw these arguments back and forth until July which is when it truly will be answered. As I stated earlier, I think Contador and Froome consistently-wise is better than Quintana (not that Quintana is bad AT ALL when it comes to that, but it just seems like it doesnt matter if Contador and Froome rides in November or July) , but that Quintana - when is 100% - is the best pure climber on long, hard mountains in a 3 week stage race. |

Quintana fanboy. Quintana very far from the best climber in all three weeks, maybe in the last week, when he is no longer a panty in the overall standings or opponent is Aru and Uran.
For me:
1: Froome
2: Contador
-------------------Big distance-------------------
3: Nibali in the first two weeks. Quintana in the last week. |

Yes, or the opponents are Froome, Contador and Purito.... Unless you obviously think he has declined since 2013 which would be stupid.
Contador or Froome will probably with T-A, but that doesnt make my argument any weaker. Im still convinced that Quintana will win in July because I feel like he is the best climber in the 3rd week. |

Quintana was very good in 2013, climbing better then Froome at the end of the Tour. You can't compare him to the rest in 2014, but we're 2015 now, he's 25 compared to the 23 he was in 2013. Logicaly that would mean a step forward for him.
Combined with his posts in the stats discussion, I'm not sure if we should give Arberg any credibility anymore.
