Based on a discussion in another thread..
For me personaly it starts with Omloop Het Nieuwblad, anything before that is just prep racing.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I'm stuck between two! It starts in tour down Under and Omloop for me. But the tour Down Under feels more like a showcase, exciting and good yes, but yeah, Omloop is the real start.

Well let's be honest, the cycling season never stops!
The European and WT seasons might end in October but the Asia Tour is just kicking off as is the Africa and America Tour season. The Oceania Tour begins in January as well.
Then we've got the CX season through November and into February. 6-Day season, not as big as it used to be but still good. Indoor track season, i mean we've had the Worlds just this past week!
There's cycling to enjoy for all 12 months of the year

I find it hard to get excited about the TdU just because it still feels like things shouldn't have started. I really like Qatar as a race but I still think it feels like pre-season so for me it is OHN.

Anything before OHN is only something like a pre-season for me and I don't really pay too much attention to road cycling at winter time. Better idea for me to enjoy winter sports during that time, cyclocross included.

I think the trio of Algarva, Andalucia and Oman will do it for me, kinda. I dont pay too much attention to the cobbles (at least not the races leading up to RVV and PR) so I would say the 'real' season starts with P-N and T-A for me.

I lol'd hard at "I only watch Worlds" option. Are there really such kind of people? |

I would have thought maybe replace Worlds with Olympics would make more sense, but there needs to be a "I only watch the TDF" option as well, because I know a lot of people that casually watch that, but nothing else.

I'm an all year round type of person. In the winter and early season, I watch track racing and 6 days.
If you want my answer to the road season starting, I would say Omloop

I follow road racing throughout the year but I very slowly start watching road racing again with Omloop and Strade until Paris-Nice & Tirreno get me completely, usually.

For me the road season really start with Paris-Nice, the first race with prestige and that isn't just a preparation.
Sure the TDU or San-Luis are getting bigger, some of the early race like Andalusia, Oman, Qatar or Algarve offer a great show.
Put the "Course au Soleil" is the first big thing.
And personaly, my season doesn't start before April, before that it's still witner.

I voted Omloop. What I mean by that is that even though the NBA tips off on Halloween (or a day or two before), I won't watch anything more than a game or two, if that, before Christmas. Same goes for cycling. The season starts with the Aussie Championships, but I won't watch anything (except maybe a compressed hour long recap if I'm home for one or two TDU stages) until Omloop.
EDIT: Also, I shouldn't be reminded polls exist on this site. Early on I was obsessed with them, starting them for every possible thing I could possibly imagine. I'm sure Mike asked Aab-ern at one point if it was possible to block certain users from starting them. And I'm sure because he once told me that...

I voted for TDU, simply because this is the first race I watch in the season, but I should have voted for "the season never stops for me" because even in December I was all about cycling...

Enjoy the TDU and if the question is where it starts then that's it for me. Doesn't mean I'm not more excited about Omloop but I enjoy the season long variety from January - October.
If the question was pick one GT or phase of the season that you wouldn't want to miss then it would have to be the Spring classics. Concise, compelling one day dramas. |
