Vuelta a Burgos Discussion
SportingNonsense
It's a busy time for mountainous stage races at the moment. The ProTour riders are in Colombia, while PCT/CT squads first have the choice between the Vuelta a Burgos and Volta a Portugal, followed later by a choice between the Tour of Hellas and the Portugese race. Understandably then, squads are a little stretched - but for those who have made the journey to Spain, the rewards could be all the more satisfying than alternative C1 races. Certainly, the recent Sibiu Tour - also C1 - had a much stronger field than here.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2013%20Routes/ct_c1_vueltaaburgos.png

Stage 5 is the only one to feature mountains, with the other 4 all featuring hills across them. Just the two are rated as hill stages, but the first flat stage has an uphill finish, to further limit sprinting opportunities.

The race favourite is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Thomas Dekker. He did not let a lack of TT put him off. His C1 calendar strategy has so far yielded 3 race victories (Ain, Queltzaltenango, Sudkarnten) and a runner up spot - the one blip being 13th at the Sibiu Tour. Can he make it 4 as he prepares for his only HC race of the season in Greece?

Bringing up the challenge is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.png Florentino Marquez, a man who has thrived in the lower quality of some C1 fields. Victories at Tachira and Japan were followed by a runner up spot in Eritrea - but he could not match Dekker when they have previously in Guatemala and Austria.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Jose Angel Gomez Marchante was the man to defeat Marquez in Austria, which was the undoubted highlight of the Spaniard's season so far. A season lacking highlights is that of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Vadim Ratiy, back now from a difficult experience at the Tour de France (He failed to finish). He has not raced as heavily as others yet, but his record of 5th, 11th and 16th in stage races so far has not matched expections.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Igor Anton's schedule over the season is quite similar to Ratiy and he too is looking for a first big result. In contrast, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ken_zps45e45b07.png Marco Marzano has had much success - albeit at a lower level - and he will now look to convert that into a strong C1 performance.

Other riders gunning for the GC are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Vitor Rodrigues, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Dario Cataldo, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Daniel Mareno and Joaquin Rodriguez Oliver, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Carlos Castano, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Wilmer Vasquez, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Sergei Kolesnikov and Aleksej Kunshin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.png Theo Eltink, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ken_zps45e45b07.png Michele Scarponi, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Aleksandr Dyachenko and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Mikel Nieve.

The leading sprinters include one of the riders of the season i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Nolan Hoffman - who has been somewhat subdued recently, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Matti Breschel and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.png Jerome Giaux. These three can handle the hills better than other speed demons here - for example i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Aleksandr Serebriakov and the great i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Theo Bos. Bos has been handed the honour of the number 1 on the back of his jersey, as he participates in his 2nd and last race of the season. Riders like Moreno and Kolesnikov, named as GC contenders above, could be amongst those climbers to mix it strongly in a sprint in the first 4 stages thanks to their combination of hill and sprint stat.

With all the stage racing going on right now, there are some great opportunities to score in a weaker field. Everything should be open, behind Dekker that is.

Nice preview SN!

We are here all-in for Hoffman, time to stop that subdue thing. Smile
I hope his all around abilities should help him to contest the sprint in majority of stages, stage win is the goal, maybe even points jersey.

Hesjedal or Sheydyk have free roles for the mountain stage, they should try to surprise the favourites, but i dont expect much.
I'll be back

roturn
Lo Cicero in Portugal and Bos in Burgos. Wink
Hope he will win the race then.

Mountain time is always a bit of a boring time for Rothaus. Should change in the next years when Olivier becomes a quality stage racer. Until then, you won`t really see a Rothaus rider in the high mountains.

Just like in Portugal there are some CT teams, that could do pretty well here.

Anything but a victory for Thomas Dekker would be a huge letdown here, but as we have seen before mountainstages aren't really made for time gaps, and if Marquez or someone else with ~80 MO stat can have an edge of 30 odd seconds over Dekker on that final stage, they might win the race.

I will be rooting for my former rider Samuel Sánchez here. I like him a lot even if he's noway near his former level.

Hoping for some points, every race is vital now so need to score as many as possible from this. Up to Vasquez or Agudelo to do well on the mountain stage and try to grab a top 5 which, I know, is unlikely.

Time Carlos Barredo to get to race before his Spanish fans. He just might surprise and challenge for a podium spot.

Matti Breschel was strong in the April classics but now has a chance to do well on the not so flat stages.

Let's get racing!

Top 5 goal here. Won't be easy but could be possible with a bit of luck.

Marquez has been a star this season - would be interest to see if he can upset Dekker here. Rest of the top 10 seems all up for grabs- should be a fun one!

Marquez is back racing, always good for us. Smile Top 3 would suffice, our scoring record hasn't been great laltely so more points will always comes in handy, although saying so too much success and Marquez wage could stay very much like one he has this season. Could be a nice and unpredictable race.

Any points will do. Will hope for a successful breakaway or KoM jersey.

Not sure, in hindsight, that this was the best pick for Dekker. Should win overall, though, especially considering the rather weak competition.

Is he going for last place/Out of time limit? Pfft

Marquez could have done with better positioning there, but Goos compensates with a quality ride. It's a joy our talents perform already this year so well Smile

Dekker cruising to some hefty points.

Very usefull seconds for Moreno there! Let's hope he can take some more Smile

Maybe it was this I had predicted when I picked Dekker for this rather mountain-less race

Great leadout for Nolan Hoffman there, shame that this surprising early move was countered by the climbing dudes, still nice sixth place for the start. Good win for Dekker, congrats CT! Smile

Fixing the narrow roads, or just lack of time? Smile

Not impatience, just curiosity. I bet Hoffman won it all on narrow roads and jury was consterned and called for the re-race. Pfft
I'll be back
