Hi guys,
I've ordered a new PC that should come on Monday so I will finally have a pc decent enough to play PCM. I'm sure I will have lots of questions but I will post the ones I can't find an answer for in here. I already have a couple:
1) If you get a new sponsor does your jersey change?
2)What are the essential downloads I should get? |

First of all welcome to PCM and welcome to the PCMDaily community!
1.) Yes, your jersey does indeed change if you get a new sponsor.
2.) You should get the latest patch, and the PCMDaily Database for that patch. If you have problems installing it, I'm sure lluuiiggii will be glad to help!

You have to do a few installs:
1. The last patch of the game
2. PCMdaily expansion pack 1.3.0.0(you can find it in the download section)
3. PCMdaily expansion pack 1.4.0.0 Update from 1.3.0.0(also download section)
A 2013 DB is optional. PCMdaily will launch the 2013 DB in a few days, I recommend that you should wait for it

Jesleyh, who btw is offering great support at the comments section, already took care of it people I'll just complement it with links
Should be noted that if you install the 2013 Public Beta, though, there'll probably be less stuff to be downloaded for the V1

Thanks so much guys this is really helpful. My PC arrived today so I may play some tonight.
Can anyone suggest stages or tours that I can practice on before starting a career? |

Hmm.. Actually try all kind of stages. You should be a dominating team at the start, just to make it easier for you. You probably start with difficulty easy, so when your able to dominate with a dominating team, you can try some stages with a less dominating team. If you succeed in getting a lot of wins with them, then you should move up to normal.
So bascially, any kind of stage. Maybe the TdF stages are the most fun at the start. So do some sprints with the team of a top-sprinter(so with Cav and Greipel), do some mountain stages with for example Contador, hilly stages with Gilbert.
You can also do some cobbled races though, but they are (obviously) not in a TdF stage
Just do stages you feel like doing, and if you think that you're ready for a career, just give it a try. I would recommend your first career with a strong WT team, just to get used to the career mode.
But before you start a career, download the DB's we recommended. The career is simply a lot more fun with the DB's. You can't optimally have the fun of the DB if you didn't have the DB ready when you started the career.
So first download the DB's, and then start the career(or download DB's -> play some stages/stage - races -> Career)

Actually, I would not suggest starting on easy, you may pick up "bad habits" that way. I would rather suggest starting things on normal, since it's still kind of easy, but a bit more realistic (Contador doesn't win EVERY mountain stage in real life, etc.). But it's your decision to make, both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Well, just a few stages on easy until you've got the hang of it. Just to explore the game(options) a bit. At least that's what I did.

Not much I can say here but welcome to the forum and also don't start on easy. I'd start medium cause if you get smashed on the first race than get better for the next few than you will know. But on easy you will probably win the fist race and than not really improve if you don't go onto medium. So start on medium.

Thanks for that however the links for the expansion pack 1.3.0.0 does not seem to work.
Is there anywhere else I could download from? |

Are you trying by the Rapidshare mirrors? If yes, they're not working indeed. But the torrent seems to be working fine, and it'd probably the fastest anyway

Thanks Luigi I'll torrent it tonight.
I have another question. I had my first real go at PCM last night and was trying to attempt some sprint trains. However I can't really work out how to do it. Do you click on your sprinter then right click on your lead out man and then click follow?
I never really got it to work apart from in team sky when Cav fell and I just had to go it alone with 3 guys. |

Yeah, and you should get your front rider on 'dot', that's the small circle button, which says 'free effort' or something like that. You should put it on effort bar(with the 'dot' option too) 80-90, until a rider is empty, then drop him and use the next guy, do the same, until you've got 2/3 riders left with 3km to go. Then start your sprint with 2km to go, and release Cav(so let him sprint) at about 1km to go.
I suggest this page:
https://pcmdaily.com/tipstricks.php?cat=2
There are some useful sprint guides, some even with vid's... Some of the (most useful) guides are from PCM 11, but it works the same..
If you have more 'gameplay' problems, you should consider taking a look at this site's Tips and Tricks section. It's located here:
https://pcmdaily.com/tipstricks.php
You can also get there with a link on the left section of the site(under PCM Tools)

There are many different ways. I myself do it this way, but some tips in the Tips & Tricks section will tell you otherwise.
Though, whichever way you choose, you'll have to practice it a lot.
Start with a .1 race like Handzame Classic and pick a big sprinter like Cav or Greipel. If you win a few times in a row, try a .HC race like Scheldeprijs and next a WT race like Vattenfall Cyclassics. Flat stages will work as well. If you can win those, up your difficulty and start over.
This will take some time, but it's the best way to learn. By the way, you don't have to race the entire race, just fast forward and make sure your team stays hydrated. |

I have been plying for awhile, but I have just recently started getting into the game in a more "hands on" way.
My best tip, create a team (use good riders) or use a good team. And run a season with them. Your results will will be all over the place, but you will learn how to:
Put the riders you need for a stage race or single day race. EX- Contador for cobbles, no...but using the rankings of your riders you can see who will do best in that area.
Learn how to manage around injuries and when/who to put in the races for best results. The stars are races your sponsor wants you to do well in. So again using the rider rankings, put the best chance to win riders in the races with stars.
Manage riders stats. You will start to gain an idea of what each stat is and how it works in a race. As an EX- Contado may have an 80MO rank. However, if you have a 77MO rider, but his ACC is 80 and Contador is 70ACC...if you play smart, he can eat Contador on a climb as he can attack and ride from Contador wit a better burst. Contador will still ride well, but the ACC is useful on climbing stages (almost as important as MO rating IMO). I hang back with my team, a rider in the 1st or 2d lead group...then I punch forward with a fast burst. I repeat this about 3-4 times till the other riders either are fooled I'm not trying to get away or are shaken...then my attack works well.
All in all, its like any game. You have to learn on the fly at some points. I started on easy, to get use to how everything worked. And now use Normal or Hard...depends on my mood. Pretty much have 1 team in each difficulty so what I wana do I can.
Good Luck and WELCOME to PCM and Forum.
Pain,Agony,Suffering...Thats why I love cycling!

Thank you all so much for your replies. Unlike most forums every single one of them has been helpful and polite.
I think I have got the sprint train ok now. I am not great at mountain stages but with a good climber I can finish within a minute of the winner.
A couple more questions:
What is the best way to get your riders to the front of the peloton to prepare for a sprint or final climb?
I am playing with team sky and am just trying to win the stage but on some hilly or mountain stages the breakaway can get a 30 minute lead on me. What is the best way to stop this? |

I always make sure the riders that I'll need are close to the front while the others are in the middle right from the start. This way, they will never have to burn too much energy to get to the front.
A few kms before a climb, I select my climber(s), right click the first guy in the peloton and click "take position" (or whatever it's called). That way, he'll move his way to the very front without burning too much energy.
In a sprint, it depends.
When it's not too drafty, I put my entire sprint train + one or two extra riders on relay at 85 effort with 30km to go, with the first one (the weakest, one that's not in my final sprint train) on infinite relay. If the first one is tired, I put the second on infinite relay. At 18km I build my train and put the guy that was on infinite relay on dot.
When there's too much wind, I just use the same strategy as before a mountain, but I keep my sprinters protected. Wind can destroy your sprint train even before it's started. Beware...
Other methods are putting your riders on relay or dot and let them maintain position as soon as they're at the front. Though, I noticed that they often drop back when you let them maintain position. |

When the break is let go, you have to keep an eye on it. If your sky, teams will expect you to so work as you will have race favs. To stop this, either stick someone in the break, you if the breakaway is getting too far away (1 minute per 10k remaining is a good guide) then you'll have to start putting people up front yourself.
If you spot no work early enough, sticking one or two guys up with 45-55 can often both keep the break in check and also encourage other teams to join in rather then letting you set a really high pace yourself then killing you in the last 20. |
