Personal Biography
Diego Ulissi is a second year professional cyclist. He was born on July 15th, 1989 in Cecina, which makes him 21 now. Even considering his youth, Ulissi has a decent record already. In 2005 he won the National Junior time trial championships in Italy and finished 3rd in the European Youth Olympic Games Individual Time Trial. He won the UCI Road World Championships-Junior Road race in 2006, and then defended it in 2007, only the second cyclist ever to do that.
He had a great Junior career, and in 2010 continued that in his first season with Lampre-Farnese Vini. He finished 4th overall in the Brixia Tour and 8th overall in the Tour de Pologne.
He also won the GP Industria and Commercio di Pratto.
In 2011 Ulissi will once again be on Lampre-ISD team, and will look to get even more success, as well as helping out his team leaders. He is already a decent climber, and looks to improve his time trialing ability to make himself a more complete riders. Some say he could be as good of a rider as Ivan Basso or Vincenzo Nibali, but others say that his time trialing ability will never reach their's, and he will remain as strong climber, but never a contender in Grand Tours. We'll see very soon who will be right.
Diego Ulissi: Lampre-ISD
Hey guys. I've decided to add a blog about my career as a professional cyclist. I've seen several blogs before mine, such as David Veilleux, Dominik Nerz, and more recently Tim Roe, which gave me the idea to begin my own. I've just gotten back from a holiday season on vacation, and it's nice to be reunited with the team once again, and it's time for a New Year's party. So, I'll keep this first post short, and I'll see everyone soon. Good night and Happy New Year!!!

I'm just going to say that since this is a Diego Ulissi story, a lot of Lampre's races will be simulated that Ulissi is not competing in, unless it is a big race.

We basically had the same team as last year, with a few changes. Apparently we had signed four new riders from Ukraine. They were all older than me, and were to hopefully be strong teammates. They seemed nice enough when I met them. also, 33 year-old puncher Leonardo Bertagnolli was new, and he was a great edition for the team.
Possibly the best new signing, was the edition of Michele Scarponi, an Italian who was very experienced and was a great rider as well. We didn't lose too much either, which I was happy about.
Team Presentation
When we all showed up after the New Year's party for the team presentation, the first people who greeted me were my best friends Simon Spilak and Alfredo Balloni. Balloni was my age and Spilak was threee year's older, but we were all great friends, and worked well together when we were in the same race.
The team all got together and fooled around for a long time, and then we had to get organized for our team photo, including all of our riders.
Yes, I know, it is bad quality, but it was shot with one of our team staff's phone, which wasn't exactly high-tech, if I may add. I also have a list of the team roster, which is useful to have somewhere if it is needed
Basically the team is centered around Damiano Cunego, Alessandro Petacchi, and Michele Scarponi. Our aim is to help them out a lot, especially in Grand Tours.
This year I am mostly hoping to improve my time trialing, so I'll be better at competing in Grand Tours.

Race Schedule Through April
Today, most of our riders received their race schedules through April, and I was a bit jumpy before I got mine, I must admit. Finally my coach gave it to me, and I was a bit excited. It had some pretty big races on it.
1. 23/01-1/02 - Tour de Langkawi
2. 6/03/-13/03 - Paris-Nice
3. 25/03-27/03 - Criterium International
4. 20/04 - La Fleche Wallone
5. 24/04 - Liege-Bastone-Liege
The schedule only goes to April, because our manager hasn't decided who will ride in any of the Grand Tours or any other important races late in the season.

At this moment I have the bad original database (I know it stinks), and I'm currently in the process of figuring out a better one to get, but my computerr isn't very good with this stuff so it may take awhile.
I'm aiming to install the PCM,daily's Expansion Pack V1, and I'll do it when I get the time.

Our team entered the Santos Tour Down Under as always, and it was one of the team's goals to wear the green jersey in this, so Alessandro Petacchi would be made leader.
However, he wasn't in great form, but still took an impressive second place on the first stage to Thor Huschovd.
Results
Spoiler 1. Thor Huschovd Garmin-Cervelo 3h03'33"
2. Allessandro Petacchi Lampre-ISD s.t.
3. Yauheni Hutarovich FDJ s.t.
4. Matthew Goss HTC-Highroad s.t.
5. Mark Renshaw HTC-Highroad s.t.
Hopefully he'll do better at the next stage and possibly take the green jersey.
As for me, I spent the day with Cunego and Spilak. We took some training rides, and did some climbing, but nothing too big. Of course, Cunego left us behind, but I managed to stay with Spilak the whole time, which gave me some confidence.

Tour de Langkawi Stage 1
Today is the first stage of the Tour de Langkawi. Boy am I excited for my first race of the year, even though it is flat and there shouldn't be too much action. We don't have any sprinters, but never the less a race is a race, so I'm still excited. Here is the team's startlist.
As you can see, both Alfredo and Spilak are on the roster. It's always fun to do a race with your friends to compare results. Leonardo Bertagnolli would be the leader. He is a very strong climber. Not as much as Cunego or Scarponi, but he is capable, and I will try and help him get the GC win if possible. My plan is to possibly get some KOM points, and to make sure Bertagnolli's life is easy for the first stage.
The first attack of the day came almost immediately when the stage began.
I received word from the team car that no one dangerous was in it, so there was no need to spend energy chasing.
More and more riders attacked, but we laid off the front, allowing the team's of the sprinters to do the chasing.
Here's us riding comfortably at the front of the peloton.
Other teams did organize at the front however, and they soon caught the breakaway, at which point was up to 17 riders. There was still a long 60k to go, however.
At both KOM sprints, there were a few attackers who were ahead, so I never got a chance to go for them. All of these attackers were caught with only 20k to go, however.
A valiant attack was made by four riders with four kilometers to go, and they opened up a 30" gap.
In the end, they stayed away from the peloton, and in the end it was Thonas Vedel Kvist of Glud & M who outsprinted the others in the breakaway, with the peloton closing in.
All of our riders finished safely within the peloton, so although nothing was gained on the stage, nothing was lost either.
Stage Results
Spoiler 1. Thoas Vedel Kvist Glud & M 2h09'38"
2. Jonathon Bellis Saxo Bank-Sunguard s.t.
3. Michael Barry Team Sky s.t.
4. Daniel Lloyd Garmin-Cervelo s.t.
5. Andre Scholze CCC Popol +0'29"
...
43. Diego Ulissi Lampre-ISD s.t.
So of course nothing was to be expected from today. We hope there will be more action once we move into the mountains.

I think it's good! Hope you continue till the Giro and Tour at least! Continue with smaller uptates from other races, and not too long reports from Ulissis races. |
