Post-Transfers Press Release

Going into transfers our goal was to shake up the squad a bit, but try to do it in an inexpensive way. Last season showed us that Tadej Pogacar and Ivan Siric are worthy leaders at the top of the roster and that would remain unchanged. But below them there should be plenty of scope to try different approaches.

We knew the main two gaps in our squad were sprinter and puncheur. We figured the latter was going to be hard to acquire. As a backup plan we looked at filling that spot with a more unconventional rider. Enter Pascal Ackermann who quietly became our main and only transfer target. He's not a puncheur, but even as a hilly sprinter he gives us something different that we didn't have before and can hopefully score a significant amount in specific situations.

With sprinters we were primarily thinking of free agency as the source of acquisition. Then early in the process we acquired Rick Zabel which paused our free agent bids. By the time we were ready to go back into free agency we got the chance to do the swap deal for Jasper Philipsen.

All the main additions are a part of our continued dismantling of the time-trialing setup. In simplified terms you could look at Geoghegan Hart, Lammertink and Christdoulos being replaced by Philipsen, Schlegel and Ackermann. We are hoping this is a good change that will give us more race versatility and most importantly more scoring.

From a regional point of view we did sell two Balkan riders in Milos Borisavljevic and Gasper Katrasnik, but we also added Matic Zumer and Martin Papanov from free agency and secured a great local talent in Daniel Skerl. We were able to provide more development to both Tadej and Ivan. The latter will try to compete for the top 5 positions in the biggest cobbled classics while the former will target a podium place at a Grand Tour. As a team we'll aim to stay further away from the relegation spots.

With that said I would now like to formally introduce Cedevita's 2025 rider squad.

I was not really paying attention to everything going on during transfers as I was away, but coming here to see what you have managed to do with your team I can only be very impressed.
You managed to bring your team forward in basically every regard by signing valuable riders, great talents and all of that while collecting so much training budget. Yes, maybe your TT got a bit weaker, it's strong nonetheless, but you already have multiple young replacements coming through.
Great job! Your should have a great season and I don't think you're far from challenging for the title in the coming years.

What a team!

11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Transfers is always a fight between getting younger or better. Seems that's not an issue at all for you, just get both. Pfft

Really scared of Siric. Guess I should have saved up for Per training after all!

Is it too early to see Tadej take a GT? Could see him catching up to his real life tally before he starts declining.

@everyone Thank you for the kind words Smile

Thanks. I think free agency was a bit helter skelter for me and I could've done a lot better. Otherwise things went well and I agree we're at least a couple of years away from having a chance at challenging for the title. I just need to keep us out of trouble until then Pfft

I'm kinda on the fence as well. I think we got potential to be pretty good, but it's not a given. I'm also not sure if last year was more bad luck or just being bad. We are different though and that is quite fun like you said Smile

We'll see if it's actually both Pfft
And to be fair I have let go of some good young riders over the last 3 years with Ardila, Govekar, Buitrago and Sheehan all moving on. Finding a good balance is always tricky.

I continue to have high hopes for Siric, but I'd be surprised if he is challenging Per on a consistent basis Wink

With a favourable start list I think it's possible, but that happening seems unlikely.
Too bad he has no chance of catching up to his real life monument tally

I don't know enough about PT to judge the scoring potential with the switch to Philipsen, Schlegel and Ackermann. But the moves are looking good for the long term!

Not sure about top 5. Maybe in a best case scenario. I still think top 10 is far from a sure thing, so I would be very happy with that.

I also think you had one of the best transfer windows this year. A super strong leaders trio, some very interesting riders behind and some really strong talents on top. There was a point during transfers where i thought you were on track to be a top 5 lock this year with solid chances for the podium but going for Kajamini instead of immediate contributors of course weakens the short term a bit. Stilll, very impressive squad and an outstanding base for the next six years.

A lot to like about this team and with training - Pogacar could grab a GT this year is planning goes his way...

Hope Ackermann can stay as far from Yates as possible Pfft

Yeah, I think I mostly set us up for the future, with hopefully enough incomings also keeping us out of trouble. The leader trio has plenty to do as the depth gets weaker each season it seems.
Did I make the correct choice not accepting your loan offer? Pfft

I dont think there is correct or incorrect for that. Could have helped in getting some additional training in for Pogacar/Philipsen or not having to sell some of the depth this year already but also definitely see why the offer was less attractive for you than for some other teams with that training already secured Pfft

I'm happy with the sales I made everyone that left was either projected for that or we knew there was a chance for that. Depth was always gonna suffer a bit and then even more when there weren't many options left. Once I get round to my goals maybe my decision makes a tiny bit more sense Pfft

Cedevita 2025 Goals

The early indication is we might have shot ourselves in the foot with this goal selection. We picked harder goals, anticipating a better budget at the start of transfers, but we didn't feel like we got our money's worth, literally. We still did very much at least accomplish our training goals which will hopefully help us in these key races.

We are still largely relying on Tadej Pogacar, but our investment in cobbled classics is now reflected in our goals. Ivan Siric will be targeting the two biggest races on the calendar. He has a good record at De Ronde, but he's yet to make the top 10 at Roubaix. The latter should be a more difficult race than most, but otherwise we hope to see him fight for top 5 results.

Tadej somewhat repeats last year's formula of goals. As the mountains flip back to Tirreno-Adriatico so does he in the hopes he can repeat last year's heroics and claim the overall win. As for the mandatory Grand Tour goal he'll go to the Giro and yes, he needs to win it. Well runner-up would most likely also be an acceptable outcome. Either way it's a tough task for his first time at the race.

Finally we want to get much closer or even make the top 10 in the standings. Last year was a bit of a let down and we had a real relegation scare. This time we hopefully improved the team enough, improved our planning and perhaps the division as a whole is a bit weaker for our still young leaders.
