Scandinavia Open Road Race
The Scandinavia Open Road Race concludes the June calendar (a little later than expected) with 3 exciting stages. 3 hilly stages – one of which is a time trial will make this a fascinating race.
| Year | Winner | | | 2022 | Taylor Phinney | | | 2021 | Miguel Angel Lopez | | | 2020 | Miguel Angel Lopez | | | 2019 | Vegard Stake Laengen | | | 2018 | Simone Ponzi | |
These are the winners of the stage race version of the Scandinavia Open Road Race, which changed from a ODR back in 2018. In the last three editions, our race winner has also been a stage winner – 2 for Phinney in 2022 and 2 for Angel Lopez in 2021 after just 1 in 2020. Thus, look for a stage winner to take the GC, especially if a strong hill or mountain rider can win the prologue.

The table presents our list of favorites in no particular order, as Miguel Angel Lopez appears mid-pack here, but likely is the favorite for a 3rd GC. His strength on the hills is simply unmatched. De Bie can try on the steeper sections, but his slower climbing just isn’t at the same level and recovery might play a factor on Stage 3. Gidich is the other challenger for the biggest hill stages and it could come down to how early the racing kicks off.
Herklotz is a very interesting choice here with as he should demolish when the race heads up hill for long periods of time, it’s just unclear how much that will matter. Phinney is also here ready to repeat and is a significantly better time trialist than those already mentioned. It’s not the longest TT in the world of course, but the fact that it tilts uphill means that the gaps will be significant.
Pogacar might lead the 2nd pack of favorites as he matches Phinney’s style, but likely can’t quite match the speed in any discipline. Should Phinney push the pace, Pogacar could use that to his benefit for sure to pick off many of the other favorites.
With only three stages, it is tough to know how the teams will play their cards. Outside of these, many of the riders here could find their way to a top 10 if they manage their strengths appropriately.

The best on the hills and the best in the TTs already find themselves into the favorites conversation, but there are a few in each category that don’t find their way into the favorites, especially on our hill specialists who don’t ride a TT bike often. For example, Skujins will find his way into the top groups on stages 2 and 3 most likely, but will be too far behind after stage 1.
It should be a very interesting set of team tactics for our favorites throughout the hilly stages.

One of those races where I just threw every good rider I had into the 3 RDs, and it seems many others did the same. Could be a good scoring race or could be terrible and the game might have a headache deciding between Pogacar and TGH as the leader.
If I have to pick a favourite then I'll go with Herklotz, because why wouldn't you?
Thanks for the preview.

Welp, that's a startlist!
Good luck everyone, it will be an interesting race for sure!

One hell of a start list. We have Conci, Borges and Mas so three different options pending how this one plays out. I could really do with a massive overperformance from Conci (which he is definitely capable of) given our scoring in the Tour isn't too promising.

Sick startlist, Lopez obviously our leader again and we expect a podium from him but with all those stars attending, we are facing a big challenge

Never a good sign when each favorites list has like a dozen or more names, and you don't feature on any of them.
Not scoring in short stage races is a good way to lose ground quickly. Hopefully we get lucky with a breakaway or something. Maybe some aggression from Aranburu.

My hope is the prologue is not that TT dependent. If that's the case Kinoshita has a shot at GC, otherwise we're looking at stage hunting.
Thanks for the preview!

Hoping for selective hilly stages. But big chance it will not happen.

Can't really expect anything. Got a couple of decent TT/MO type riders, but usually they mess up

What a depth! Sensational startlist, which hopefully makes for a brilliant race
Will be cool to follow this race, purely because of the quality here. Hoping Mohoric can nick some kind of a stage result. Regarding the GC, suspect a GC result will be very difficult for him seeing the poor start he will get due to the hilly prologue. |

Have to hope that the hills are selective and De Bie can fight for a top 5, but I think a top 10 is likely to be the best case scenario. |

Aranburu continues to surprise me in prologue's, and not in a good way. I know he has terrible TT stats, but how could he possibly lose over a minute in less than 6 hilly kilometers? GC obviously out of the question now, hope he can be aggressive at least.
Don't remember why I didn't send Kamna here, may have just been an error. Major planning error.

Honestly, that's disappointing. Ganna sees some worse riders of his rider type finish well ahead (probably needed some more MO), and Herklotz didn't even gain a second place worth of bonus seconds on De Bie/MAL.
Got a Top 3 sponsor goal here betting a lot on the combination of this prologue and steep finishes, but we definitely have to be on the top of our game to make that happen after today. Probably need one stage win or lucky gaps.

Huge result from Remco. Now it will be interesting to see what happens in the next two stages.

Great start from De Bie looking at how similar riders did. Not expecting the two hilly stages to be selective enough to create huge gaps, so hopefully he's able to move up into the top 5/10 through attrition or some lucky bonus seconds. |

It wasn't a bad effort from my guys in the prologue, but we probably need some favourable splits to really get the scoring I hoped for.

Second on the day is good but no gaps and Herklotz winning with phinney also collecting bonus seconds must be one of the least benefitial situations possible here.

Crazy that there were attacks so early and still no gaps. Not like it would have helped us anyway though, Aranburu was nowhere to be seen until the absolute final screenshot. Would have hoped he would have attacked for KOM or something with no other hope in the race anyway.
This is gonna be a catastrophic minimum pointer for us in a 3 stage GC. Again though, it's my own fault cause I have no idea why Kamna isn't here. Maybe I thought there was a Tour clash?
