It's perfectly fine that you enjoy watching a few guys dominate on every terrain. Personally, it's not my thing. Those guys are certainly extremely impressive, but I don't really watch cycling to marvel at how much superhuman athletes can push humanity's limits. I realize that's the draw for many viewers of endurance sports, but it's not mine. I like seeing how vastly different riders can find ways to excel in a sport with an enormous amount of variability between and within races. I got into cycling partly because it was somewhat uniquely a sport where people with a wide variety of physiques and skillsets could find different types of success.
I also got into cycling in 2008-2011, and I guess looking back, that was somewhat of a peak of specialization in the peloton. The best were mainly specialists, and the all-arounders generally gave something up for their versatility. Gilbert was a pure puncheur. Schleck was a pure climber. Cav was a pure sprinter. Tony Martin settled in as a pure time trialist. Of course, specializing completely wasn't always the best - Evans won the TDF despite not being the best climber or time trialist. But the key was that there were guys trying to accomplish goals from completely different angles.
That was the excitement for me, especially in a GT. Schleck, being the best climber in 2011, put on his Galibier performance and others like it because he had to maximize his strengths in an attempt to make up for weaknesses that his opponents didn't always have. Back then, top GC contenders would have completely different riding styles and strengths - Basso had to gain time on the long diesel climbs. Contador attacked constantly until he could break the elastic. Wiggins limited his losses uphill before gaining time in the TT's. In a given race several guys could be equally strong in their unique way, but the final standings would come down to how they managed the race and maximized the opportunities that suited them best.
Nowadays it feels like the strongest riders are just the strongest riders period, and they can pretty much play any role they want if they decide to do so. That's extremely impressive, but part of what attracted me to the sport is lost there. Again, I fell in love with the sport in a very short period where that's how it worked, so I'm not saying it's the right way for the sport or the majority of fans. It's just what I like.
And please don't take this to be me opining about a lack of teamwork or strategy in today's sport - definitely not the case. More strategy and dynamic teamwork in this Tour than we've seen since 2012, no doubt. I'll take it over the Sky trains any day.

It is the same teams winning for the last 3 years. And they are strong everywhere. Really sucked me out of the sport ( not the sole reason, but one of them ). In 2020 it was funny but it seems just unbearable, kinda like a freak show.
Also Vingegaard seems like the next Armstrong and Van Aert seems like the next Jalabert.

Regarding the previously discussion on Vingegaard and his sudden boost, it doesn’t come as too big of a surprise for many danes. Top 3 Tour sure. That’s never a given, but he was sick/injured for most of the 2020 calender, so him not showing a lot there isn’t surprising.
Team Denmark monitor the best talents and athletes in Denmark, and within the elite sector Jonas Vingegaard has physical output as a junior that was in the top 3 percentage. That is absolutely massive at that young an age. He and Simon Andreasen smashed all tests easily beating the other cyclist including the likes of Fuglsang etc. Only our rowing department had top top athletes with similar physical traits.
From a very early age he was routes the next Danish Superstar in cycling. He had a very promising 2019. Jumbo have spent a lot of time teaching him how to be a leader, as that doesn’t come natural to him. He has been riding a lot with the development team despite having huge output, only to teach him how to be the best and letting the others within the team know it and work 100% for him.
Seems like those things have really paid off!

Weak sprint with Stuyven in 4th sprinting really awful. A shame BEX messed up the timing, but really Philipsen was the only impressive sprinter today. Well deserved winner.

I think Thomas was trying to set up a Ganna solo? But Pogi I knew was gonna happen, called it a little bit back. No way he wasn't going to try at least XD. |

Yeah, I don't feel like Jonas seems as ridiculous as some of the others that have been around. I've basically been the same even since I've got into cycling, I'm pretty sure nearly all of them are on something to be honest (although possibily to differing degrees). Jonas doesn't strike me as amazing sus, his not young but his not ancient, his had some clear progress over the last few years and the calander has been weird due to covid which means you maybe don't get the most obvious looking progression.
Honestly I'm just glad theres someone who can clearly compete with Pogi. I do think he struggles in extreme heat of which there was ALOT this year which probably brought his level down a little. I also think that Jonas just had a better overall strategy of targetting stages to win and take time on. Pogi going full PCM and trying to win every stage is... amusing and entertaining but probably not the brightest of things to do. |

And more importantly, Pogi's team is much worse than Vingegaard.
Tbf I think we've been given a marvelous Tour. The Danish fans were outstanding as well as Magnus Cort. Pogi seemed a sure thing for half the race up until that epic stage to Grandon, where Jumbo ganged up on him. Remember the Roubaix stage? Pogi could have won the race there if it weren't for St van Aert. From then on we had the best scenario possible, with Pogi on the ropes you knew that kid would attack left right and center. Ah and van Aert just ridiculed the whole sprinter field.
It just seems like this Tour has given so much more than all the US Postal and Sky mountain trains Tours. For that alone I as fan am very grateful!

Obviously when you win the Tour and you do it in such a dominant manner, eyebrows will be raised. But I'll give them a pass since they are my favorite team, had a somewhat linear progression and they put on a hell of a show.
This Tour must be the most entertaining Tour I've seen in my entire life. And to top the great racing, everyone involved at the top seems to be pretty wholesome from Pogacar and Vingegaard's relationship to Van Aert and Van der Poel breaking away together in the Galibier stage.

Hope for equally more entertaining stages today and tomorrow, but without all these crashes, please. Glad Cavalli is doing okay after that stunt. And happy to see Vos has overcome the Covid issues to do what she knows best.  |
