I’m not sure if Powless is using that “jump into the break of the day and try to stay as much ahead as possible” tactic to avoid the chaos on the cobbles. He kinda needs to rely on his luck, though, this isn’t a full PR course, nor is Powless a guy like Silvan Dillier, Matthew Hayman or Tom Devriendt.
Looks like it turned out well for him, at least today. The only one to gain time on Pogi... |

Well after today. Tour feels over at this point. Ineos are riding for podium evidently since they had half a freaking team built for this stage and refused to pull as soon as Jonas was back in the back, so they clearly aren't bothered by Pog (which means they are just fighting for 2/3rd.) Jumbo obviously suffered alot of bad luck due to the mechanical and crash to Jonas/Rog respectively.
Both Jumbo and Ineos invested pretty hard in squads that are going to be strong in the first week and theres been no cross winds, Pog has taken time on the fucking cobbled stage.... |

Basically waiting for Pog to crash...sometimes that's the play.
I once famously won the Vuelta with Dombrowski in PCM because Froome crashed on the last mountain descent of the race and had to abandon...
You never know what will happen...
Maybe the gendarmes catch Pogi with the illegal dope... |

yesterday: "wow, Jumbo looks really strong, might just wreck the whole tour"
today: "wow, J̶u̶m̶b̶o̶ Pogacar looks really strong, might just wreck the whole tour"
tomorrow?: "wow J̶u̶m̶b̶o̶,̶ ̶P̶o̶g̶a̶c̶a̶r̶ Ineos looks really strong, might just wreck the whole tour"
friday?: "wow that dog just wrecked the whole tour "
Roglic undislocating his shoulder sounds neat tho

What could have been.
It's been a while since I've actually had a rooting interest.

I would have been happy to see an American in white, but unfortunately Powless is 4 months too old.
I'm very interested to see where a few teams go from here. Pogocar should run away with this now, but behind that it's pretty open.

Love the way EF is animating the race. Jumbo has their leadeeship decision taken, just protect Vingegaard and send Rogla in breaks. All other teams need to unite under the all versus Pogi banner now to try and fight for honours here. Disappointed with MvdP, but just goes to show how tough the Giro Tour combo is.Stuyven with a really good day there as well.
Simon Clarke what a win! Reminiscent of Hayman. Glad to have decided to whatch the last 50km of today

I have to give it to Jumbo - They are doing a lot of things right imo... Obviously they come to win the Tour, but they also have some very expensive riders in the team that they need to give some freedom in order to make them work other days.
Van Aert was given the freedom to ride away on stage 4, despite the initial task was to break things up for the GC riders. In order to do so he would have had to wait 4 seconds on Vingegaard, and given that he won by 8 seconds it wouldn't have been worth the gamble of more teams collaborating for the catch, which could have also hurt the green jersey option.
But a LOT of bad luck has been going their way despite having tried riding the race from the front. On the prologue Christophe Laporte completely destroyed the first intermediate time, only to then crash out of contention (still finished 25th).
Yesterday first van Aert crashed, then almost crashed, then Vingegaard mechanical with no other "short guys" next to him, and the car being held back by an official Tour car. Then getting the team surrounding him only for Roglic to crash dislocating his shoulder.
A quick response, and they decided that it was better to have still 1 rider in the top flight rather than 2 riders losing 1-1'30" seemed like a very good call, as the team (van Aert in particular) absolutely destroyed everything to come back right in time for the "s.t.". The riders that were spent dropped back to help Roglic salvage as much as humanly possible aswell to keep him somewhat in the fight for the podium too. van Aert even getting 16th on the stage.
I'm no Jumbo Visma fan by any means, but I think they have been an absolute joy to follow.
Pogacar is from outer space - you can throw rocks at him, at it will just catapult off the forcefield around him. It's even so strong that his team mates can't get close to him. Or atleast I hope that's the reason why they suck so bad, having the 2 time Tour winner all alone the entire race.

Honestly I am more and more convinced, that Wout's hanging out in the back of the peloton yesterday was really purely tactical exactly because of the possibility of what happened yesterday (technical/fall of Rog/Jonas).
Die hard fan of Tom Boonen and Quickstep since 2004.

Weird for me to be able to watch a GT stage, which must be one of the first for the last 2-3 years unfortunately.
But todays stage is so much different to the usual kind of stage.
Who had expected a group of yellow jersey Van Aert and GC rider Fuglsang on a rather flat/hillish stage in the breakaway.
No idea really how this ends today as the peloton needs to make drastic decisions at one point. |

Van Aert is a mad man and I'm here for it. A move like this is never allowed away on PCM.
Also go go Simmons!

He's even closer to the yellow now but in some ways so much further away

What a bad tactics from Jumbo...first Wout in the breakn ust to loose yellow makes 0 sense (maybe only if they knew he would lost it today anyway).
And then when Vuillermoz attacks, Jumbo pulls the group closer to him, even when they know their arch-rival Pogačar is clearlybthe best sprinter among GC guys when Roglič is not 100%. Nice job Jumbo, giving Pogi a 10seconds bonification
It seems like they only had plan A for Tour and now they are just bad in improvising.

yeah I don't get the point to try a break with WVA with no chance to the finish, he was likely the only rider (maybe Matthews with better placing in last km?) who could fight for the win against Pogacar...also Roglic with a disastrous timing for launching a sprint

I will never ever get why all the other teams just help Pog win the Tour... I mean, let UAE chase WvA on their own, and then see what happens. Pog would probably not have 2 guys left on the final km if they had to work all day long...
But instead, other teams just do all the work to finally get strictly nothing at all out of the stage - and the worst is, they knew it beforehand! I mean, no-one of them can beat Pog in a 1:1 sprint currently. I don't know why, and I don't have a legal explanataion of this (especiallly given that it's from the start of the season until now), but that's reality. For me, there's really no point in helping the by far strongest rider of the race, who definitely by far doesn't have the strongest team.
If they continue like that, the Tour is over already now. If they unite against the leader, it could be interesting. But history tells me they won't

Can someone explain the tactics behind Wout going for broke with a day long breakaway today? Surely on this type of profile he's a stage favorite from the peloton. I get that it's heroic or whatever to see the yellow jersey doing this kind of stuff, but it seemed pretty stupid today. Not to mention Jumbo then chased Vuillermoz and led out Pogocar with Roglic.
Pogocar is just on another planet. I had a very faint hope for Powless but it soon became clear Pog would win the stage and there's no looking back.
Looking up and down the top 20 though, I still think Roglic will end up on the podium here.

Dunno what is worst
Bettiol pacing when having 2guys in front (even a guy that could take the leaders jersey!)or Wout attacking in the yellow jersey... ?
Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever.
