I figured the first Grand Tour of the year deserves its own thread
The race starts tomorrow in Hungary, two years after it was originally scheduled to do so. We already get a hilltop finish on day one, then the big ascent up the Etna on day four to get the GC ball rolling early. Here are some of the favorites, shamelessly stolen from inrng's preview:
***** Richard Carapaz
**** Simon Yates, João Almeida
*** Miguel Angel Lopez, Romain Bardet
** Mikel Landa
* Dumoulin, Buchmann, Kelderman, Bilbao
I'm praying that Bora makes the right choice and lets Emu lead. Then it should be an easy win for him
A bunch of good sprinters as well with Demare, Cavendish, Gaviria, Nizzolo, Ewan, van der Poel and more.
I also wanted to draw attention to the bets I just set up for the GC, mountain and points classifications as well as a few head to heads. They run until tomorrow, 2pm CEST. I might do stage bets as well, any help here would be appreciated (just a quick PM with some odds if you have thoughts on contenders, don't have to be the full 11 ones either).
Hopefully we'll have an entertaining 3 weeks, but the Giro usually delivers.

Got a hunch that this is gonna be a GT win for MAL. Either that or he crashes out in the first week. We'll see.

Sadly, I don't think MAL has the mentality needed to win a GT.
My money is on Carapaz.

Objectively I have to agree with you, but the odds on MAL were too enticing, and now I gotta hype myself up for my choice.

Bahrain bring Landa and Bilbao but looking back at their last Grand Tours, I am inclined to say Buitrago will be their best placed rider.
Don’t really know what to expect, think we’ll see some surprises and breakthroughs here. Hope Dumoulin can wear pink on stage 2, but I have my doubts he will be fighting for the podium, let alone top-10… |

Wait, Kelderman and Hindley are teamed up again???
Hard to look past Carapaz for the win if all goes well.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I'd love to see a breakthrough of Jaakko Hänninen, but I fear he hasn't got what it takes atm. Gall could be a rider to surprise though. Can't look past Carapaz for the win however, but in general it's a lineup full of good but inconsisten climbers.

Pretty cool finish there. You don't see several complete trains lining up next to each other like that much anymore.
Girmay for the points jersey!

I guess I was pretty on the nose there. And people tell me my pessimistic side isn't worth indulging.

Apparently he had a hip injury before the start of the race, don’t think it was wise of the team to let MAL participate. Either that or they couldn’t send for a replacement to Budapest so close to the start. |

I still can't understand how it's so much harder to find a working cycling stream in 2022 than it was in 2012.
