Tour of Britain

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Profiles/mg_britain.jpg

Welcome to the 14th edition of the Tour of Britain. This is one of the prototypical hybrid races, where a mixture of time-trialing and hill climbing comes to the fore. With that said the last 3 editions were won by time-trial specialists. But that doesn't mean the puncheurs can't do well or win.

With that said let's look at some of the favourites:

GC Favourites

It's still surreal to have a rider like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Bobridge in PCT, but the man ideal for races like this and should be the clear favourite. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Dunbar hasn't always performed to his manager's desire, but this seems to be the right race for him. As it is for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Izagirre who's already won a similar race in Jelajah. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Spilak hasn't been setting the world on fire, but he has been consistent and he should be near the top here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Gesink has shown his age at times this season with his low acceleration hurting him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Fraile is one of the best TTers here and could feature highly if he does great on stage 2. Other contenders are pure puncheurs like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen, or hybrid TTers like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Rosskopf and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Oliveira.

But the race starts with a sprint stage. It's a wide open field as the quality of sprinters is not as high due to a single flat stage. Still the chance to wear the leader's jersey is a good reward. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande is a good sprinter and he should have no problems tackling some of the hills on the stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Perera has the best pure speed and perhaps the most competent lead out rider. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Kalaba, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Boudat and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Gibbons are all powerful riders also, and don't forget pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Manarelli who is coming off a recent stage win.

cycleYorkshire have a strong squad of riders here on home soil and while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Durbridge probably won't contend for the GC. He will want to win this stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Howson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Kittel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Fiedler should provide great opposition. Even beyond them we're looking at some great time-trialers.

Very similarly to Denmark, this could be pretty good or it could be absolutely nothing for us. Perera has a chance to compete for the win on stage one which would be huge, but I don't think we will be able to pull off a successful leadout. So let's not do that maybe, guys?

Fiedler should get at least a Top 5 in the TT ideally, and then I really don't know what to expect from Rosskopf. I assume that the hilly stages will be much more impactful for the GC than the time trial, so I don't get my hopes up too high. But we'll see. Vendrame would be great in a breakaway, but it'll more likely be one of the Mugishas if the season so far is any indication. Which, to be fair, they've both done reasonably well.

Bobridge and Izagirre are the big favorites imo, I would be surprised if anyone could topple them - maybe EBH with some great hill stages. Thanks for the detailed preview red, looking forward to the reports!

Sorry for writing you off immediately Eddy but there's no way you're gonna do well this race. Not because this race doesn't suit your skills but because you're lazy.

Almost entirely here for the XP, maybe Walscheid can do something in the sprint.

Considered sending Boswell in the hopes he would do some stage hunting, field isn't crazy deep so that might have been worthwhile in retrospect.

Don't think the hilly stages generate big gap, so I think one of the Top TT guys with some hill capability take this.

We owe this new course to some legacy stagemakers - all 5 stages were adapted from different stage makers. 1 is SN, 2 is is Lesuisse, 3 is Wings, 4 is Lyote and 5 is AG2R

Big opportunity here for Eddie, 4th here last season as an unmaxed rider is great and would be wonderful if he could replicate that here. Hoping the final two stages are ridden hard and could cause the pure puncheurs some problems. Luch could also pull off a surprise here too.

Thanks for the preview!

I hate to see those discount sprinters getting one top result after the other, while (my) overpaid guys often don't deliver... Although I likely won't see the benefits of it, for the sake of the game you should really clean up the totally inflated sprinter market.
Congrats to cunego nonetheless, you sure had a lucky hand with that guy - like you did with pretty much all your transfers Wink

Nice to see working in the peloton being rewarded with a fourth place. Not amazing points-wise of course, but still nice. Congratulations to another nice win to future PT team Bralirwa Wink And conmiserations to Marco..

To be fair, before Denmark, Perera had accumulated a grand total of I think 11 points all season, so it's not like he's been lighting the world on fire all year. I would have refrained from calling him a disappointment because of his price tag, but I had expected at least a little more. He does fit a certain mold of sprinter that has been successful before, after all.

Arguably, I did not expect whatever the F this week has been from him, though. Nothing short of extraordinary, that much is for sure. Not sure what else to say, I'll just enjoy the moment I guess Grin Thanks for bringing it to me in such a nice way, red! And thanks for the congrats Smile

You've really been more optimistic about my team than I have at every turn this year and I continue to be happy that you're almost always correct

4th by Fiedler is great in the TT, but a poor day from Rosskopf is tough for the GC. Hopefully we'll be very active in breakaways over the next few days. Congrats Bushwackers, nice win for Dillier!

Rare win here for Dillier, I am shocked!

Decent enough performance there, Dunbar doing just enough to stay with the other TT gc riders. Puncheurs still not far behind, this is shaping up to be a super exciting race.

Thanks for the report!

@cunego
Obviously it's no surprise that Perera does that well, given his skillset. He's surely a solid rider for pan-flat races.
What I essentially mean is that it's frustrating to develop a rider, have to overpay him to renew him, while there's a multitude of stronger riders available for 50k. Of course, Boudat has 78 PL, but with prologues being so random he hasn't even scored a single point from them iirc. It's that mismatch between wage demands and relative worth that bothers me.

Anyway, good performance by Rekita to take 7th today, while Balloni definitely has scored far more points through breakaways than in TTs...
Moscon has the worst TT of the puncheurs, so his time loss is no surprise. Hopefully the team will be offensive on the hilly stages.

Congrats to Bushwackers, Dillier performs for once Smile

Nemolito
Rather bad from Spilak I fear. Hope the hills are hard enough to take some time back for at least a top-10 GC.

We can dream of holding on here but I suspect it will be close to impossible for even Fraile to win the overall with some decent puncheurs only over 2 mins behind

Wow, Rosskopf looks really strong here. I hope he can keep it up, Top 10 would be fantastic. But the remaining two stages look really tough. Good to have two men in the breakaway, even if it didn't amount to much. Bit unfortunate that I apparently didn't have the means or awareness to put someone like Eyob or Uwizeyimana in here, they might have been better suited. Tesfatsion in 40th though is a great result!

Congrats Fabianksi, very nice win for Moscon. Fraile looking strong so far as well. Thanks for the report as always Smile
