Laengen looks like the leader for the general classification. The Norwegian is a contender for a top-10 spot.

Marcus Faglum Karlsson will aim for the leader jersey after the first stage. However, we don't think the Swede is strong enough to compete for the overall win.
Gonzalez Salas is another prologue (and time trial) specialist. His skills doesn't seem to suit the stage profiles in Ukraine.

This team is stacked with four climbers who are all capable of a good time trial. The Portugese Jose Fernandes should be the leader of this group.

Jacob Fiedler was tenth in the time trial of 2020. That seems to be a good objective for this year as well.
This team has with Hadi, Rosskopf and Uwizeyimana thee allrounders that should be able to perform in the general classification.

BWT Hyundai N Cycling is the only Continental Team in this year's race. Unfortunately their best time trialers (Marchewka and Stoenchov) don't have a good record in the mountains.

The Danish team Carlsberg-Danske Bank brings two time trialers (Sterobo and Roe) to the start in Ukraine.
When we look at the startlist, we don't think these two can compete for the top prizes. Maybe Kasper Asgreen can go for a surprise in stage 2.

Cedevita has the same problem as BWT earlier in this preview. The mountain skills of Christodoulos and Penko don't match up with the top competitors.
Frenchman Olivier Le Gac looks like the leader in the second stage.

Omar Fraile was one of the excellent in last year's edition. The Spaniard won the opening stage and was eighth in the last stage.
Maybe he can repeat his performances? Ivo Oliveira looks like another contender for the third stage.

Robert Gesink performed well last year. He was eighth in the first stage and third in the second, leaving him in the 6th spot after the closing time trial.
He is all of these allrounders that has been moulded for this kind of race. The Dutchman will be supported by Barbio, Goh and Hiratsuka in the hilly stage.

We expect to see Eurosport x GCN in the second stage. They have two excellent riders in Schreurs and Stuyven.
Michael Cuming seems to be the only contender for the general classification, as Archibald isn't suited for this course.

Italian Fausto Masnada is one of the expected names for the second stage. His time trial abilities look weak to go for the overall.
Balloni and Rekita could do well on the closing time trial, although the course isn't fully suited for them.

Simon Spilak looks like the leader of Los Pollos Hermanos. Especially the second stage should suit the Slovenian, where he will receive support from Affonso and Munoz.
Marlen Zmorka is one of the best time trialers in this field. He wants to do better than last year, when Zmorka finished 16th in the closing time trial.

In the Minions squad we can find another contender in Rigoberto Uran. He has the time trial and the climbing abilities to survive these three days in Ukraine.
He will be supported by a strong squad including Poljanski, Marquez, Ivanov and Haga. Haga finished here in fifth place last year, after a 4th place in the queen stage.

Alexandor Cataford will be happy to return after last year's edition. He finished second in the overall, after registering a fifth, second and first spot in the stages.
Podium Ambition has selected a nice support group, altough there looks to more quantity than quality.

In the Polar team we can find another leader that performed well last year. Ion Izagirre finished within the top-10 at all three stages. The Spaniard also won the 2018 edition.
This year they also bring Egan Bernal and Marc Soler. Both are capable of riding a good overall classification.

Bobridge will be supported in the hilly stage by Gebrezgabihier, Seibeb and Ssabagwanya.

Martijn Keizer is one of the big favourites in Ukraine. He should be able to perform in all of the three stages.
Tim Dees will show his countryman the way, as he finished here third last year.

This race is a massive indicator for our season. If AC goes well then he should bring in good points across the rest of his calendar with this version of PCM agreeing with his skills. And that will go a long way towards our survival bid. If AC struggles, well then we're in trouble as we lose a third of our leadership chances. The stronger field makes me think we could well be in camp two and looking at a bad outcome.

I kind of forgot we were racing here, but it's an obligatory HC race, so it's more of a sacrifice than opportunity.
Could have sent Warbasse here, but the race days didn't align. We'll be hoping either Roe can really surprise like he did in Hong Kong, or that the race is dramatically less selective than expected and Sterobo somehow manages to snag a minor placing. Other than that, a breakaway appearance on stage 2 would be nice.

Really nice preview. Thought Zmorka could do well on the final stage (and GC), but it seems I'm wrong. Also thought Spilak's TT and hill combination could net me a lot of points, but underestimated the competition he would have this season. The race needs to be selective on stage 2 I fear, or I will have a disappointing stage race as in Hong Kong.
Btw, think you posted this preview a bit early, as Ulrich is the reporter and he's currently unavailable. Iirc this race will start at the beginning of December, after Tirreno/Catalunya. (Not negative towards you and your great work Laurens, just wanted to inform the participants they don't need to expect anything tomorrow  )

Thanks for the (early) preview. Should be an easy one for Keizer, Izagirre is the only one I reckon could be a threat. For us, Rosskopf should target the Top 15, this is the type of race we pay him 100k for. And with a little (well, a lot) of luck, Uwi or Hadi might slip into the Top 25. But time trials have been very unpredictable this year, so it could be slightly better of much worse. Good luck to everyone

Next opportunity for Masnada to deliver some good points. Hong Kong was very good, but we've got some more TT kms here. The uphill one should suit him, no matter whether mountain or hill stat comes into play - hard to conclude with that short distance.
Else, we're trying to go for stage results on the final day; Balloni and Rekita had solid results so far, let's see if they can get a couple of points this time. And maybe one of our 23y.o. TTers can get a few U25 points

Not a lot of hopes on this one. Thought it wasn't a great option for Kelderman, and seeing the competition, I guess the others also felt somewhat similarly. \ Interested to see how Zoidl handles the race, while Talansky in a free role is also interesting. Hope the AI gives us a break for a change.

Hoping Amezawa can get a flying start here as a maxed rider, challenging for, and maybe even winning, stage 2. Looking a lot forward to see him maxed!
If Laengen can sneak info the top 10 GC, it will be a positive surprise, as I suspect that will be very daily form dependent considering both the prologue and the TT. |

Time for Fraile to shine. He *should do well but it all depends on stage 2 here. Doesnt seem too decisive but neither did stage 3 of the Volta a Portugal either.
Keizer is the favourite but TT randomness may well mix the order up quite a bit.

This is for the most part another xp race for us. We don't have any riders suited to this race so if Penko manages to score a couple pts, I'll be more than happy with it.
