[CT 21] Glanbia Foods Cycling Project- The Season Review
MacC
Year 3 of the great Glanbia adventure begins.

The highs of almost getting promoted in year 1 were soon replaced by a very poor second year. The Boys in Green need to regain their mojo.

Change but nothing too radical as most of Glanbia’s leaders have signed on for a new year with clear instructions to cycle faster and win more points. The team will be kitted out in a new kit this year designed by maestro Hillis. We look forward to seeing it.

For those of you who don’t know too much about Glanbia, a quick summary.

Glanbia is an Irish food conglomerate originally based on dairy products it now covers a wide range. Things were going great until Brexit. The impact of Britain leaving the single market on Irish agriculture was immense so Glanbia started a campaign of diversifying their market.

Part of this campaign was to launch Continental Cycling Team with riders from Ireland, North America and Australia and New Zealand with the USA being a particular focus above others.

The team ethos is based on comradery with (up to now) no single individual leader being mopping up most of the wages or points. A balanced team but definitely a passion for Time Trialling.

Glanbia is sad to say goodbye to a few good friends and wish them well. In particular Michael Ford who contributed so much to our success so far.

Big thanks to Hillis for the updated jersey

And here is the renewed squad. There are some obvious needs for loans and I will listen to any offers for any riders. Cruz, Downey, Bennett and Craddock are unlikely to budge though.

Glanbia's ventures into the Free Agents market have, so far, seen a focus on veterans who hopefully can still produce the goods.

Irish legend, Daniel Martin, is coming home to add a new level of climbing power to the team.

US Classics man Dadley Corwin is brought in to allow Glanbia some interest over the cobblestones.

Finally, Kiwi James Oram is added to Glanbia's Time Trial set-up.

More to come...

We still have to solid Level 4 guys ready to be loaned out

Hopefully Dan has enough left in the legs to give you a good season this year! He could be the difference between promoting or not if he is on the money.

Meet the new guys:

Glanbia are happy to welcome 5 new signings (so far).

The big one for the Irish team is the recruitment of Dan Martin at minimum salary. While not a young rider he still brings a new level of quality to Glanbia over the climbs.

The same could be said for Ricki Nelson in the sprints. Along with Sam Bennett and Ben King Glanbia hope to competitive in stages and flat races with this trio.

If nothing else hopefully the cobbles will be at least more interesting and maybe even add some points with the signing of Glanbia's first ever Cobbles leader Dadley Corwin.

Finally it wouldn't be Glanbia without Time Triallers. James Oram will be a key man individually and as part of the team Time Trial. Likewise Michael O'Loughlin is a still developing component of that team. In pure TT number terms the Time Trial Team might look a bit weaker but the new additions are better all-rounders so hopefully small hills shouldn't scupper our TTT chances as much.

In broad terms the team is stronger in most areas with some good pint-getters hopefully.

Good luck all especially newcomers to the CT!

Thanks, he will need to contribute a fair share alright

Awesome to see Dan finishing out his career at Glanbia. It's perfectly fitting. Smile

Signing a true Irish legend like Dan Martin, congratulations! Oram should be a great addition to you time trial squad, and has even proven to be able to win C1 stages last year, so I hope he does that again for you as well Smile

So here's the final 22 for Glanbia. Statistically, the average is up from 70.5 to 71.15 so let's hope that translates into extra points:

In terms of Climbers and Stage Racers a lot will be asked of Martin and Brandt. Unfortunately, a small budget meant the desired training for Craddock couldn't be made but on the right type of 1 week race he is still a threat

James Oram is the new big Time Trial man in Glanbia's favoured class. With Sebright and Ford being released I have to admit we may have lost a bit of edge here. Downey, Oram and especially Cruz are all capable of winning stages and high places in flat tours with TTs while Meyer's high Prologue/sprint combination offers interesting chances too.

Where Glanbia do hope for better results is in the sprints with the addition of Ricki Nelson. It will be a challenge to get the best out of Nelson and Bennett

On other terrains Glanbia remain weak but Nathan Haas (hill76) being our only Puncher of any standing and new (old) man Dadley Corwin (Cob76) marking an attempt to grab a few points over the bouncy stones.

Glanbia remained limited but determined!

I was scouring the DB late in transfers and saw O'Loughlin, and thought he is the perfect rider for Glanbia, then I searched him and you had already signed him.

January Preview:

Gisborne GP :

A debut for Dan Martin in the hilly classic but Nathan Haas is probably better suited to taking some points here.

Michael O’Loughlin will also make his debut.

Target: Top 10

Vuelta a Tachira
:

A varied route sees Glanbia bringing a varied team and hopefully a threat on all terrains.

Dan Martin is our most likely GC contender with 3 Mountain Stage and a Mountain TT. There are 4 chances for sprinters too so Sam Bennett will be hoping to start his season well with a win.

For the non-Mountain Time Trial both Sean Downey and James Oram on his debut will be looking for glory.

Young Irish talent Jack Bernard Murphy will be here also as a debut boy.

Target: Top 5 GC and a Stage win

Hong Kong Challenge :

This race clashes with Táchira so our Time Trial threat is split. Craddock and Freddy Cruz will be here. Craddock is probably out best GC hope too if he can do well in the 2 hilly stages.

Haas will be there as back up and maybe as a stage or GC threat.

The race will also mark the first race in green for Matthew Teggart

Target: Stage Win, Top 15 in GC

January Review:

Gisborne GP (C2H2)

One of Glanbia’s weakest terrains- the hilly classic.

Nevertheless on his debut Daniel Martin put in a solid display to come home in 11th. Nathan Haas picked up small beer in 19th while Ben King sneaked in to a grab a single point in 25th! They all count!

Given the terrain, the Glanbia management expressed their satisfaction with the result. A solid start for Martin and the team.

Hong Kong Challenge: C1

A very tough field here in a C1 race.

Lawson Craddock put in a very good display of just about holding on to the peleton and strong Time Trial to take an 8th place on the GC. Good result in this race.

The only disappointment was the failure of Freddy Cruz to make an impact in the Time Trial.

Still, a good haul from a tough race.

Vuelta a Tachira

A well suited course for Dan Martin. 10 race days here makes it important that we score.

We were targeting glory in the sprint (Bennett), GC (Dan Martin) and Time Trial (Downey/Oram).

I said in my preview that if we got 2 out of the 3 it would be a good result.

Put a tick in the sprint box as Sam Bennett took Stage 2.

Put a tick in the GC box as Dan Martin raced consistently to take 2nd overall. He’s already justified his €50,000.

The Time Trial? A bit disappointing but Downey took 5th place in the final TT scoring some points.

A good start for Glanbia. For comparison check out how I started my review from January 2020:
"January, what a bloody awful month. The darkness, the despair, and the weather is bad too!"

DarkWolf
Congratulations on your results so far! Lawson Craddock did a good race in Hong Kong, it was good to see him do well. I cannot say the same about Dan Martin at Tachira, because it hurts. Smile I just kidding there, congratulations on that! I was hoping for Amador to overhaul him on the last stage, but it was not meant to be.

February preview:

Gent - Welvegem

The first cobblestoned race of the year will see our new Cobbles leader Dadley Corwin get tested. He was signed as a clever (cynical) attempt to pick up small points in cobbled races.

Our expectations are limited as his hills and sprints are weak. Of more interest in the long run is our young Irish classics hopeful Matthew Teggart.

Target : Top 15 (or 25 even)

Tour of Catalunya

A pretty ideal race we hope for Dan Martin. Two Mountain Stages and the TT is a Team one.

Not quite the full Time Trail team but should be enough firepower with Downey, Craddock, Oram and Brandt to help Martin out in the GC.

Target: Top 3

Tour of Southland:

A debut for our new Sprinter Ricki Nelson (who I picture as a mix of Ricky Martin and Willy Nelson) in this C1 race. Hopefully he is competitive on the three flat stages. there are two hilly stages on paper but Glanbia is hoping Nelson can hold onto the peloton in these stages. He will have King as a good lead-out man.

Nathan Haas is here too for the GC if those hills are too much for the sprinters.

Target: Stage Win/Top 10

A good January for you and February seems to set up pretty well also.

I am trying to form the mental image of a Ricky Martin/Willie Nelson cross.
