Unless its a sprint stage...pretty much the only way any of the teams are going to win a stage against 'W'Ineos is to get in the break. So the breaks are going to be big...and why chase a big break?
Plus, the best way to attack Bernal will be to get strong riders in the break...so pretty much every team but Ineos has a vested interest in successful breakaways.
Thats the way this race is going to go. |

Good to see Victor Campenaerts win though, I think he realised last year the new generation of time trialists is just better than him and he needs to find a different way to win a race. He attacked and lot and finaly got rewarded.
Also, how dangerous was that finish? F*ck UCI and their rider position rules, if this was a mass sprint on those wet cobblestones, you had even more riders going to the hospital today.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Nibali has a rib injury also caused by today’s crash. The team will assess if he can start tomorrow. Also think both start and finish did not meet all safety requirements…. |

I don't want to contradict, but the start was just a flat straight road, tailwind and fight for breaks made it dangerous as every stage is, there wasn't any tricky situation...and the finish was made dangerous by the rain, but isn't much different to Nokere Koerse.

I have to disagree with that comparison, Nokere finish is uphill so the speed will be significantly lower. Also, in Nokere the entire hill is made of cobbles, this was a cobbles until 500m, normal road, then cobbles for the last 100-200 metres.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

the fact is that we had riders crashing on cobbles of Nokere and not today (ok the fight in breaks involved less riders, but that's it)

Pordoi and Fedaia cancelled, riders will only climb Passo Giau in a shortened 155km stage. Extreme weather protocol applied. |

Guess this is the new norm now. Quite sad tbh because it would have been an epic ride for sure and riders could have become legendary that day. I suppose cycling has in that sense lost its last heritage of the earlier days.

Kinda sad to see this happen. There's very small chance of ice and people who are on the climbs are saying it's only light rain at the moment.
It's really sad to see these type of stages be gone. I get it from the side of the riders, but I will admit that the fact that the queen stage is now gone from the race... it does make me sad. I guess this is the end of high mountain stages in the Giro? |

The weird thing is, apparently it's not even really come from the riders:

if they can ride on Giau, why not on Pordoi and Fedaia...I don't really understand this decision

Ok, I don't want to be all conspiracy theorist and tinfoil hat but...
I'm starting to wonder if RAI isn't the cause for this. With these conditions, the broadcast of the stage would be at risk. |

I wouldn’t be surprised if that were the case. However, there’s still no live images so that didn’t help much. |

EF about to chase to protect Carthy's GC position and to carry the INEOS train safely into the only climb of the day. Oh well. What a waste of a race. |

At least no break stage win I suppose. Hopefully some nice attacks on Giau. Shame on Giro committee for shortening the queen stage though. They genuinely suck.

What a shame. Every GT these days the best stages end up ruined. They shouldn't be so eager to take out climbs when they have no way of getting more climbs added to the weaker stages later. The integrity of the race is completely ruined not just for us spectators, but for the competitors who planned their race strategy around this.
Suddenly what could have been the queen stage instead becomes basically another medium mountain day. What a waste.
Edit: Of course I say this right as we see the peloton is gone.

Yates struggling, Vlasov behind with a mechanical. Group is tiny - Evenepoel I think cracked before the climb. |
