The Barbados Cycling Festival is here. Set to start on Wednesday, with some of our sprinters jet setting in from the Tour of Southland. It's moved to HC having been PTHC in recent seasons.
And Sprinters should be all the matters here, we've got 4 flat stages, so let's just immediately see who we've got.
| | F | S | A | | Lo Cicero | Ivano | 72 | 84 | 78 | MOL | Ewan | Caleb | 75 | 83 | 81 | Podium Ambition | Swift | Ben | 73 | 83 | 81 | Berg Cycles | Guerao | Oscar | 74 | 83 | 76 | DK - SVA Zalgiris | Avelino | Oscar | 70 | 82 | 77 | Aramco DP | Gaviria | Fernando | 76 | 81 | 84 | Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo PCTeam | Guarnieri | Jacopo | 75 | 81 | 80 | Bakkafrost | Manninen | Matti | 74 | 81 | 80 | Valio - Viking Genetics | Vesely | Daniel | 73 | 81 | 80 | Minions | Cavendish | Mark | 71 | 81 | 78 | Kraftwerk Man Machine | Boeckmans | Kris | 72 | 80 | 82 | Swisslion Cycling Team | Keukeleire | Jens | 72 | 80 | 79 | Podium Ambition | Kupfernagel | Danilo | 74 | 80 | 80 | Berg Cycles | Rowe | Luke | 78 | 79 | 80 | Xero Racing | Van der Sande | Tosh | 75 | 79 | 79 | Farfetch Pro Cycling | Kalaba | Dusan | 74 | 79 | 79 | Minions | Reinhardt | Theo | 71 | 79 | 84 | Centovalli - Fiat | Stepniak | Grzegorz | 72 | 79 | 79 | Fablok - Chocolate Jacques | Perera | Madushanka | 71 | 79 | 80 | Bakkafrost | Lay | Saulo | 73 | 79 | 81 | Campari Asahi Procycling | Aberasturi | Jon | 74 | 79 | 78 | Podium Ambition | Willwohl | Willi | 73 | 79 | 78 | Kraftwerk Man Machine | Lutsyshyn | Roman | 70 | 79 | 80 | Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff | Awang | Azizulhasni | 64 | 79 | 83 | Andorra Cycling Project | Young | Eric | 74 | 78 | 77 | Desigual | Tewelde | Jani | 74 | 78 | 77 | Aramco DP | Mareczko | Jakub | 74 | 78 | 77 | Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo PCTeam | Cisse | Issiaka | 74 | 78 | 77 | Centovalli - Fiat | Fonseca | Armindo | 74 | 78 | 77 | Aramco DP | Vaquera | Cesar | 71 | 78 | 80 | Azteca - NBCSN |
We have three former stage winners here. Caleb Ewan took Stage 1 last year; Guarnieri won a stage in 2018; Oscar Guerao is a three times stage winer - twice in 2018, once in 2017.
Guerao has a GC record here of 2nd-1st-29th. Last year did not go so well! Meanwhile Mark Cavendish has a GC record of 1st-3rd-5th. Impressive - though it does perhaps make him favourite for 7th this year?
This race is the first HC stage race of the season, but it is not the first HC sprinters race - many of these riders were there in Australia for the season opener Down Under Classic.
1 | Jacopo Guarnieri | Bakkafrost | 1h45'04 | 3 | Kris Boeckmans | Swisslion Cycling Team | s.t. | 4 | Theo Reinhardt | Centovalli - Fiat | s.t. | 5 | Matti Manninen | Valio - Viking Genetics | s.t. | 6 | Daniel Vesely | Minions | s.t. | 8 | Caleb Ewan | Podium Ambition | s.t. | 9 | Oscar Avelino | Aramco DP | s.t. | 15 | Jens Keukeleire | Podium Ambition | s.t. | 16 | Alvaro Hodeg | Minions | s.t. | 17 | Ben Swift | Berg Cycles | s.t. | 18 | Saulo Lay | Campari Asahi Procycling | s.t. | 19 | Luke Rowe | Xero Racing | s.t. | 20 | Morten Reckweg | Berg Cycles | s.t. |
We saw Reinhardt establish himself as a real threat amongst the 80+ sprinters. Guarnieri taking the win, Boeckmans on the podium, Ewan and Swift perhaps disappointed with their end result.
Other sprinters in the race have picked up wins since, but Barbados is now where they need to string together some consistency, to contend for those GC points too. And we all know how much sprinters can struggle with consistency these days.
Elsewhere in the race, these are the strongest flat beasts:
| | F | S | A | | Brockhoff | Jan | 79 | 62 | 73 | Polar | Rowe | Luke | 78 | 79 | 80 | Xero Racing | Mas | Lluis | 78 | 71 | 78 | Repsol - Netflix | Cherkasov | Nicolay | 78 | 69 | 74 | Desigual | Veyhe | Torkil | 78 | 56 | 78 | Bakkafrost | Richardson | Alexander | 77 | 68 | 67 | Aramco DP | Varga | Peter | 77 | 65 | 80 | Repsol - Netflix | Aaltio | Risto | 77 | 61 | 61 | Valio - Viking Genetics |
By sprint stat, it may be difficult for the top 10 stage placing time bonuses to separate the best U25 riders in the race. Kalaba as best bet, though he is not his team's overall leader. Cherkasov and Nych as the best U25 on the flat.
| | F | S | A | | Kalaba | Dusan | 74 | 79 | 79 | Minions | Hodeg | Alvaro | 70 | 77 | 76 | Minions | Abdul Halil | Mohamad Izzat Hilmi | 66 | 76 | 75 | Aramco DP | Minali | Riccardo | 69 | 75 | 75 | Valio - Viking Genetics | Bol | Cees | 72 | 74 | 73 | Fablok - Chocolate Jacques | Riabushenko | Aliaksandr | 72 | 74 | 73 | Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff | Steimle | Jannik | 71 | 74 | 76 | Podium Ambition | Rajovic | Dusan | 69 | 74 | 78 | Swisslion Cycling Team | Cherkasov | Nicolay | 78 | 69 | 74 | Desigual | Nych | Artem | 76 | 64 | 75 | Polar |

Here's hoping Steimle can be valuable for Ewan!

Hopefully Guerao can do more like he did in his first two seasons at this race for me (3 stage wins, one GC win) and not like he did last year! |

McCormick's first every HC race. Expecting to enjoy the weather, gain some experience and get in some breakaways. But as long as we do the first two it will be a nice trip.

Any points are good points, but likely 4 lost racedays.

Hoping for breakaways of course. Don't think they will, but brought my best flat beasts for this Anything over a 0-pointer will be a good race for the team

We could only send 6 riders here due to a quadruple clash of races, but all the riders here are suited to flat riding. Marin can be on leadout duties for Boeckmans if needed, so hopefully we have enough support.
A top 10 is the bare minimum here, but I'm quietly hoping to get closer to a top 5 result. We need points badly!!
Thanks for the preview

Reinhardt did very well in the HC season opener, then completely failed in C2 Ras Tailteann. Back to HC, I sure hope he'll at least compete in some sprints. Then, it's all but granted he can take a notable result in this strong field, but at least I'd like to see him trying.
Thanks for the informative preview

Looks like pretty much every top sprinter besides Kemboi is here, so expecting a tough race, but really hoping Guarnieri can get on the podium. Looking forward to the reports!

Let's see what Vesely can do without Claeys, hopefully better. Also the debut for Kalaba, probably the only race our two sprint leaders ride together so maybe not the best shot for the youth classification

Gaviria thinks he deserves the number 1? Based on his wage, yes, but he needs to start getting results now!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

We came to this race with the same recipe that we took for the Tour of Southland where we were very successful. In that race Swift showed that he still manages to win, but in this one it will be more difficult because the competition is even greater.
The objective here is to be competitive and to be daily involved in the fight for victory and for the final classification.
Achieving at least 1 stage victory is the minimum to consider the race a success.

Hope Cav can role back the years and get some kind of result here but it’s going to be tough.

Shame Guarnieri didn't have the legs in the end, but still quite a few positives from that stage, I think. We managed to control a strong breakaway, and our lead-out worked out pretty well. I think the slight uphill finish probably didn't suit Guarnieri that well, but I'm hopeful he will improve on the next stages.

Wonderful performance by Kris
Consistency is key in these races, so hopefully he can keep this up

So Claeys was the problem, as Vesely performs pretty well here. (*quickly checks if they clash on any other races*) They don't, so from now on I expect great things from you!

Very smart ride by Nicolay Cherkasov. Looks like we will get a few points out of this race after all.
